Everything you are feeling is natural. Choosing to euthanize your kitty was the last great gift you could give her. I know that it doesn't feel that way but, she was your good friend and you were a good friend to her by ending her suffering.

We lost our 11 year old kitty named Fox this past summer. It is a long story but we went through many trips to the specialty vet at the University 1.5 hours away and tests galore. It turns out that food was pooling in his esophagus making it extremely difficult, if not impossible for him to swallow. He lost 4 pounds in about six weeks. We even had surgery done on him to try and correct the problem. The surgery didn't work. We still didn't know why his nerves just stopped working. He had a feeding tube, but wasn't digesting the food properly and was malnourished. His belly became distended and he began vomiting we rushed him to the emergency vet. I left the house without my shoes and my husband left without his wallet. At the emergency vet we discovered (what I was afraid of) that Fox had developed fatty liver disease. Treatment for fld is intensive feeding. He was suffering and miserable. We chose to put him out of his misery. It was hard. We had him cremated and he is in a pretty little box on our bookshelf. My husband wrote a little story about Fox waiting for us in Heaven and even now I cry thinking about it.

You did everything you could do for you little girl. She loved you and you loved her.

I watch my other cats very closely with their eating habits. I feel guilty that if I had noticed that Fox wasn't eating right sooner maybe things would have turned out different. I feel guilty for putting him through the surgery (we spent several days agonizing over the decision) and making his last few days here on Earth miserable. But I also know that we did the best we could do for him.

We still don't know why Fox was unable to swallow. There was no truma to the area, no sign of infection. Nothing. It was a mystery to the surgeon, and our regular vet.

You will always miss your kitty, but someday you will remember her with happy tears and you'll laugh at all the cute and crazy things she used to do.

If it's any comfort, I know exactly how you feel. I lost a kitty very unexpectedly last week, he was the youngest at only 8 1/2. Cardiomyopathy. My other kitties are probably annoyed with me at this point because I keep checking to make sure they're just sleeping :-) The hard part is meal time as I'll bet you still want to fill three dishes, right?

I'm very very sorry for your loss, and hope that knowing that you gave your kitty the best life possible is some comfort to you. I miss my kitty too. :-(

I have checked the kitties to make sure they are "just" sleeping, I've been doing it for months because the neighbor came home and found his cat "not just" sleeping on the floor ....:( took him awhile to figure it out. Was talking to him and such.

Oh, I'm so sorry for all your losses. I haven't lost any of my three friends, but can't imagine how sad I will be when I do.

So sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine. I have not had to make that decision yet although one of mine is sick right now and just spent 4 nights in the hospital. She is only 3, and the vet said if she can't keep weight on this week we will be faced with that same decision of what to do. I dont' know how I am going to do it except that I don't want my kitty to suffer any more than she has to and I am sure it was unimaginably difficult for you. I know it is not much comfort, but you know you made the decision out of love and did what ever you could for her.

You absolutely did the right thing. The more special the pet, the larger the void they leave in our hearts...there will be a time when you can think of her with a smile, but I know how difficult things are right now. It may take weeks for you to be comfortable in your house without her, but that's completely normal. I hope you can do something nice for yourself in the meantime and congratulate yourself for being a great parent to your kitty. You did all the right things by her.

But you did the right thing:
When our bodies cannot sustain life, we all have to make that final journey home;
you made hers easier.

I know the pain you're experiencing. Words don't help much, but please know I am very sorry for your loss.

Oh my God,I'am so sorry! I also had a pet die around Christmas which makes it that much harder.
I'am still depressed on and off myself.Some days are better then others.
It may be hard to tell yourself this...but it was not your fault.You did the best thing you knew to do,which was not have her in any more pain.It is hard to have that frame of mind until you arent mourning so much though.

I cried pretty much for a whole week.And you should allow yourself that.Get it all out.
Then when you feel a little better,try not to focus on her death.It is such a little part of what she gave you.Think of all the happy times you shared.It helped me to make a scrapbook of photos or view footage from the camcorder.
I dont know if you believe in GOD,but for me,it really helped to hear that he was in a better place.And if you can,there is a webpage called RAINBOW BRIDGE that someone told me about.
I have been pretty down too.Didnt even feel like Christmas at all. I was glad it was over,because I had no holiday spirit.
It opened my eyes though and let me know not to take anyone I love for granted ever. I've been giving everyone here more love then they can probably stand.
Try not to freak out that something will happen to her brother...just give him as much love as you can.And I'm right there with you.Hopefully we will feel better in time.

I know just how you're feeling and please accept my sympathy. I had a cat suddenly go into renal failure in the spring of 2005. She was fine and then she wasn't. She didn't eat her wet food on a Sunday and I called the vet on Monday and took her in. She was a scared feral who loved only me and I was the only person who ever held her. So imagine how bad I felt leaving her there. She was in the hopital till Wed. afternoon when my vet called and said she needed to be euthanized since she was in 80% failure. I went early and when they brought her in , I spent 30 minutes hugging her and petting her. Her fur was wet with my tears. She was scared but was so happy to see me and I held her the whole time the vet injected her. As morbid as it seems, I even took pictures of her before she died. I brought her home and buried her in my yard along with all the others and made a white cross for her. People who don't have that special animal bond really don't get it, but all of us here do. Take care. It will always hurt but just a little less with time.

I am so sorry for you. I've had many pets get old and die, and even had a young dog who accidentally strangled. It hurts terribly. Accept my sympathy, you have lost a member of your family.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You lost a member of your family and it is completely normal to go through stages of grief. Please know that we are thinking of you and grieving with you. Someday you'll stop remembering the pain and start remembering only the good times.

Thank you, I appreciate the sympathy, sometimes friends and family don't understand. My husband and I don't have children, just cats.

Zipper was the most affectionate cat, the most snuggly one. You could not sit on any piece of furniture without her joining you.

I do know about The Rainbow Bridge. I am hoping Steve Irwin can pet her for me until I get there.

I am so sorry for your loss, in October I went through the same thing, although not as sudden. I knew for months that I was going to have to make the decision and I went around with a camera taking 1000's of pictures of Puss. I made him a casket and we buried him in the yard close to a maple tree, in the summer I will plant flowers there. You will never forget your furbaby, but it does get easier to deal with. You really did make the right decision, your baby is on rainbow bridge playing with our babies just waiting for the day we can be reunited.

I'm so sorry for all the heartache here. I lost my sweetheart too (over a year ago) and writing about him periodically helps me. -Cheryl

Oh, I am so sorry about your furbaby. You did exactly the right thing for her, she knows this, and is your guardian angel kitty now.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how you are feeling, I lost a kitty as well due to poisoning, he was actually my son's so it may of even been worse (how do you explain to a child?) I can tell you that it does get better, but I still cry over him at times, he was so wonderful and it just breaks my heart to think of someone being malicious to him on purpose (I tried to keep him inside, but he escaped one last time)

I am so very sorry. It's horrible having to endure letting a pet go, and all I can say is your missing her is a testament to your love and kindness for her.

My sweet little angel 12yr old, Natasha, was just diagnosed with CRF 2 days before Christmas. She's very asthmatic and had to spend 4 nights (over Christmas) in the animal hospital getting an iv. I thought I was going to go crazy, as I thought she would definitely have an attack out of stress being there alone over the holiday. She's at home now but getting her to eat consistently has been a daily struggle.

You did the right thing, even though it hurts so much. I rue the day I have to make the same decision. Take care.
