Continue the scrubarama. We just finished a kitchen remodel which involved removing some wallpaper. The GC did some, and I did the rest. He (and then I) used DIF to remove the paper layer left after the outer vinyl layer of the wallpaper was removed. After it was all gone, we used DIF in warm water to scrub off the glue remnants. And in the GC's words, "after you have scrubbed and scrubbed and think you've gotten all the glue off, scrub some more". That's what we did and it was a pain, but turned out great. He claimed the DIF was better than the steamer, but not sure about the drywall vs. plaster issue. The GC also told me the liquid DIF with hot water is best for the paper removal. That or the DIF spray is good for the glue remnants. good luck!

Hang in there! I just finished removing wallpaper from my kitchen and the main floor bathroom. What a job! In the past I've used Diff, but this time I used laundry softener mixed with warm water, and I think it worked very well. To apply the mixture, I used one of those pump sprayers, and then sat back and waited at least 10 minutes to let the stuff do it's magic, then scrapped away. It is a long and tedious process, but you will eventually get there, and you'll be so pleased to know you've done it yourself.

Ditto. SOAK the paper layer with hot DIF solution in a garden pump sprayer. Wait 10 minutes, then rewet an area and should start coming up. You may have some dry spots that need to be DIF'd again, but they should pull right off. Then you use the DIF again to get all the glue off. I've removed lots of paper on my plaster walls and the hot water/DIF always does the trick. May need to score it too to help penetrate.

Well, I purchased TWO Wagner steamers because the first one worked so well that my daughter started helping me (we had the entire house to do). Some rooms had two layers of paper over drywall. Came off much easier than the room that I used the dif on with far fewer gouges from scraping. I used vineagar & water with a metal scrubbie to remove the glue & rinsed with a sponge & fresh water.

I've used a steamer on painted drywall with no problem. I've also used it on unpainted plaster and it dissolved the plaster if I held it in one place too long.

Wallpaper paste will come off easily when it is saturated with water. Saturation means it has absorbed all the water it can possibly hold. The fastest way to saturate it is with a steamer---20-30 seconds. Spritzing and sponging take 20-30 minutes or more! You can scrub before it's saturated but it will be sticky and thick and hard to remove. When saturated, it is the same consistency as when it was applied fresh and it can be rinsed off with just a wet sponge. No scrubbing.

I have never stripped paper or paste from unprimed, unpainted drywall. The dozen or more rooms I've worked on had all been painted first or were bare plaster.

I have been removing wallpaper since we moved in a year and a half ago, or at least it feels like it, 6 rooms down 1 to go. Some of the wallpaper was applied directly to the unpainted/untextured drywall and worse yet, some of the drywall appears to have been covered with a contact paper type stuff before the wallpaper went up. I tried DIF and hated it. It seemed like it was actually causing the wallpaper to adhear to the wall better. Then I discovered a product called CHOMP! It's in an orange bottle with a crocodile on it. I should have bought stock, I think I've gone through 20+ bottles so far. Good Luck!

I have also used CHOMP on tough areas and it has worked well.

I have used a steamer and it was this huge industrial monster that peeeled everything off the walls. I took it back to the rental center that same day.

The easiest way for me was this way.....get 2 large sponges, 2 buckets, those yellow cleaning gloves and some vinigar. I put hot water and vinigar in 1 bucket, the gloves are because the water is too hot for your hands but just enough to remove the paste without removing drywall. When the sponge needs to be rinsed, use the second bucket.

I had to change water 10 times for a medium sized bathroom, but I know that stuff is gone forever!!!

I've used the big rental steamers. I don't think they work any differently than the lightweight home use ones by Wagner. The rentals just have to be sturdier because the get a lot more use and abuse than does a home steamer. I prefer the home steamers because they are lighter and the plastic hose doesn't get as hot as the rubber hose on the rental. The rentals almost always drip more than the home steamers, too.

The trick to using a steamer is to not hold it against the wall too long. You have to experiment a bit to find the right amount of time for your particular paper and substrate. Too much time and the latex paint under the paper will soften and bubble up or drywall surface paper can get wet and damaged. Too little time and the paper will not come off easily. It might take just 15 seconds or it might take 40. But once you figure it out, it should be easy cruising.
