Do you break your nails on bin/cup pulls?

Hi All

I am just about to complete a mini renovation of my galley kitchen. In the process of painting my previously stained wood cabinets in Cloud White. Have made a last minute decision to have new doors made in shaker style (previously raised panel). Am now considering hardware styles. I have been wanting, for a long time, bin pulls. My question to you is this: If you have bin/cup pulls, and you are clumsy like me, do you find that when you go to grab a bin pull, your fingers slip and you end up ripping a nail? I am always in a rush and suddenly am picturing lots of broken nails. I don't even have long nails, but my clumsiness results in even shorter (down to the quick) nails.

Does this happen to you? If so, I may have to say goodbye to my dream of having bin pulls and just use handles like I always have :(

I tried something new this year with excellenbt results...I have been cutting off foliage of perennials (and annuals as I get around to it) and running over it with the lawnmower. It is yielding me a lot of nice material for my compost pile. As an aside, if you put your garden remains in the trash, do you know where YOUR trash goes and what happens to it after it leaves your property? You should, so you can do the best and most educated job you can of clearing your garden. In many communities, the garden waste goes to a landfill, which is considered a no no. Not because it's toxic, but because it is wasteful of the landfill space. Some communities recycle waste and sell the compost, usually through a third party. Garden waste which is treated like this should all break down within 12 months, but they have equipment that helps it along. In stil other communities, the waste is burned, then the heat exchanged and sold as power. For these people, wet leaves and garden waste are the no no because it takes a whole lot more fuel to burn wet stuff as opposed to dry stuff. One of the best things you can do is find out what happens to your waste. It will make a difference on how you dispose of unwanted things. I don't have access points like that in this house, but in a rental we lived in many moons ago we had the ugly cord, but since it was in the kitchen it drove me nuts. Since the access was near a corner I changed the cord out for a piece of thin tapestry (maybe 9 inches wide) which I bought in a scrap bin. I but a thin binding on it and hung a pretty tassel on the pointed end with the goal of making it look like an old servants bell pull I'd seen in a Victorian house. My sil liked it so much she did one as well but she embroidered service on hers :). No servants ever came when you pulled either but at least they were pretty lol. Now a quick note from the safety commission......if your drop down ladder is an older Werner ladder you should check it's serial numbers with recall sites. They have literally killed or caused significant brain damage due to a part that fails and causes the thing to slam down on your head when you pull them down. I learned this after another Werner ladder that had been recalled failed when I used it, causing me to lose our second baby and breaking my wrist very badly. The recall notices were posted in ladder areas of home improvement stores but who goes there if they already have a ladder? Werner went banko over the attic ladder so if you have one you end up assuming the cost if a new one, but it's cheap in comparison to permanent brain damage or death of you or a family member so pretty please.....check if your ladder is over five years old? Knobs, bin pulls, long pulls, help!

I agree that you shouldn't use bin pulls on doors. I think it would be awkward to open a door with a bin pull as opposed to a knob or a regular pull -- especially uppers. Use the cobalt blue glass knobs on your doors -- the combination with the bin pulls and your granite sounds beautiful! Also, IMO, you should use two bin pulls on any drawer that is 30 inches or wider, and/or where you have two cabinet doors below the drawer. I used three different kinds of hardware in my kitchen: bin pulls, suitcase pulls and knobs. The pic below shows all three. (The suitcase pull is on the trash pullout). Also, on every drawer 27" or wider, I used two pulls, with each pull centered over the doors below. Good luck!

Cup pulls versus bar pulls

I have a related question. I really love the look of cup pulls for my drawers, but was also contemplating a bar pull similar to the one posted above ( Top Knobs trunk pull.) I was planning on doing one or the other on drawers and then simple knobs on cabinets. But I kind of fell in love with the look of the trunk pulls vertically on the cabinets. Would it be weird to do those on the cabinets and the cup pulls on the drawers? It seems nobody mixes those two. Any thoughts? Thanks.this cup pull but in satin nickel. here is the trunk pull

I tend to have long nails. I have cup pulls in our kitchen and bathroom. No issues. I usually break mine on the washer or dryer door.

Thanks everyone for telling me I needn't be worried about breaking my nails. And, kateskouros, my nails are pretty darn short, but when my hand slips on something, they tend to break easily down to the quick, which is painful. But, like I said, I am just extremely clumsy and tend to grab at things quickly, resulting in broken nails. I think it is the thought of grabbing something from underneath, rather than through the top of a handle that has me thinking I'll be always breaking them. What I should do is go to a kitchen showroom and try them out, maybe slathering my hands in hand lotion first :)

I don't like bin pulls for that reason. Go test put bin pulls at a kitchen display and see what you think. They always feel awkward in my hands and I have long fingers and standard length nails. After testing if you still Iike them, go for it!

I prevent this type of accident by chewing mine off.

However, when I did have nails, this was a common injury for me and it hurts like hell. I actually, finally got a fungal infection from my nail being lifted up and water/moisture getting under there. Which, BTW, you can get rid of without liver-eating drugs.

Anyway, to this day, I use my index finger knuckle to pull anything open.

It's going to depend upon the depth of your pulls, I'd think.

I have never broken a nail in my big pulls. I have long fingers, and long nails. Like Debra, it's the front loading washer and drier that get me (because you pull hard).

Oh great so a front loader will do it too? Right now and have a top loader. The issue is your hands may be slightly wet and the heavy metal slips and hits your nails. Hopefully we are getting a front loader soon.

Really on the cup pulls, even if my hands are wet they never slip. I don't grab the pulls precisely either. Also mine are super cheap ones. Less than $1 each!
