Honed marble countertops 3 years later? Photos? Experience?
Comments (50)Hi again rinskin, Go to the second link I sent you and then click on some of the links that branch out from that. These are all designer/bloggers and they all recommend honed AND some are getting them rehoned from time to time. One designer said she bought hers honed but wants them honed again for an even more matte finish. They all talk about living with marble and the fact that it will etch and that is a part of its beauty....if you love marble. If you prefer the pristine look and glossiness, go with quartzite or polished granite. It sounds like you want the look of honed marble. Don't be afraid, come over to the dark side....lol ;)...See MoreBest Sealer for Honed Carrara Countertops
Comments (2)I've had great success with aqua mix's sealers choice gold and miracle' 511. These are available almost everywhere (box stores) and are not crazy expensive. I currently have 511 on my French limestone counters in my main residence. No stains in 7 years with only the application upon install. Dry Treat is voodoo in a bottle ,but is $$$ and only available at specialty shops. DuPont's offerings have a solid rep with some of the best tile guys in the industry that I know....See MoreHoned Carrara Marble Owners--HELP!
Comments (9)I just had honed Carrara marble installed in our kitchen too a couple of weeks ago. The installer said it came factory sealed already but I noticed near the sink the water was seeping into the marble leaving a dark spot that would go away once it dried. From what I read this meant it wasn't sealed. So I bought a quart of 511 Porous Plus and did 2 coats of sealant. Now the water beads up on the marble and doesn't seep in or darken it! It seems to be working great. No stains yet or anything. It is cheaper to purchase the 511 products on Amazon too....See MoreRestoring carrara marble countertops pricing
Comments (3)I am a fabricator. Honing marble is a relatively easy, if time consuming, process. $40 per sq. ft. seems high as I would expect one of my experienced fabricators to finish 50 sq, ft. in a day making the final cost something like $1000. However, services like this are very subject to the skill of the craftsman and regional differences in pricing. Regarding " Granite, being a stone is also a choice, but it is a stone and will be damaged by chemicals and processes that don't hurt the quartz or porcelain." This statement overstates the vulnerability of most natural stone used for countertops. Actual physical damage to granite counters is rare and the only typical household chemical that could damage a granite top is the acid in some rust remover products. Quartz tops can be scratched by anything that will scratch granite and have the additional negative of being susceptible to scorching of the resin from hot utensils. That said, natural stone like marble and travertine are very porous, soft, and susceptible to etching from common kitchen acids like vinegar so they rapidly acquire a "patina of use" which is unavoidable. In my shop we require a customer that wants that type of stone in their kitchen to sign a waiver detailing the material properties of the stone since stains, scratches, and etching are inevitable....See Morejaneb_2008
