TurboTax question

I am trying to do someone else's tax online for them.

Is it just me or does TurboTax c-r-a-w-l?

I could fill out the hard copy papers quicker than doing it online. *sigh*

I use Turbo Tax, and it's a local program...only goes on-line for updates and filing.

It is a large program...and if you have other applications running, it might run slow.

I used it for the first time this year. At first it was really slow for me. But after I kicked DH and both boys off the internet it picked up for me. Note: I used the online version, I did not purchase the program itself.

1. The quicken data files are usually in My Documents\Quicken. They'll have names like Qdata.qdf, qdata.qel, qdata.idx etc. If you have multiple accounts, you may have something like stocks.qdf etc also. You can search for files using windows explorer. 2. I think you can only have one version on the computer at a time. If you want to revert to the old one, you can either create a system backup before installing or reinstall the old version and restore your data files. 3. The file format probably changed. Quicken does the conversion during installation. 4. Here is a page that lists a number of financial programs, some of which are free. I'm not sure which ones support Turbo tax. 5. If the file format changes, it changes for all transactions, not just checking. 6. I'd go with the latest release.

Personally I'd say use the (or an) accountant for one more year because you've bought and sold houses. Tax software is great (I've used it for years), but accountants are paid to find deductions that the software programs may well not be able to flush out. Luckily my tax situation is very simple, so I don't need to worry about that. In the next couple of years, though, I'm going to start exercising stock options at my company. Then things are going to get complex.

All this stuff can be depreciated and may qualify for other treatment if it's beneficial to do so, given the rest of your tax picture. If you can afford it, I would use a tax preparer this year to handle the new assets, then you can resume preparing your return next year yourself and simply continue with how the assets were set up.

The correct income amount should be reported on the tax return. Whether the 1099 for this income is right or wrong, or even whether there is one at all (and sometimes there's not), doesn't matter. Unless there are other reasons to extend a return, waiting for 1099 is unnecessary. kudzu, math accuracy checking is done by computer. It's a step for incoming returns. If there are addition or subtraction errors for a manually prepared return, if the tax on the return is wrong for the taxable income reported, if the tax payments (estimates or withholding) are different from what your "tax account" shows, it'll get found and you'll be notified. As I said before, when an error is known, filing an amended return is fine because it affirmatively starts the adjustment process. Yes, IRS funding has never been adequate and I think it's another idiotic practice of Congress (politicians of both parties). Who suffers are us, the compliant taxpayers, because their enforcement efforts are hindered by lack of money. Too many knee-jerk fools in our society who like to talk and think about the IRS as if they were a scourge on our society. Most IRS people are everyday citizens like you and me, federal workers at that agency not unlike others, trying to do their jobs. Some have bad attitudes, yes - you can thank your fellow citizens for that, too many people treat them disrespectfully and make their jobs harder than they need to be. We want government services, we want to pay fairly for them, and it's the job of the IRS to enforce (and not make) the laws that account for much of the federal government's receipts. More funding results in a multiplier benefit of more collections and the converse is true too. Saving money costs more money. How we go about it couldn't be more stupid.

Me, too, Trish (online vs. the software).

Thanks, Monica. I was only running Outlook, but I recall having the same problem when I did this person's taxes last year. Back then, I thought it was because I was doing it in the evening (busier then?), so I decided to do it mid-day this year. It was a little better, but I guess I am just spoiled.

Seems like a lot of time for a danged 1040EZ, but I am a nice "auntie" (read: sucker). LOL!

We switched over to Tax Act, because my brother told me that Turbo Tax was running all kinds of other programs in our computers, behind the scenes. I tend to believe him, he's a computer freak.

Tax Act, online version, is very reasonable, you can use it free, I think, unless you want to efile, then it's like $20-$30 depending on if you only do Fed or Fed/State. It is very fast, last year we did it on dial-up, this year will be faster with broadband.

We use the software and its fast for us. Turbo tax does send code updates yearly though which takes about 5 mins to download.

We haven't noticed any other programs running because of it but I guess that's the sneakiness of alot of software.
DS is always checking up on my pc to make sure everything is up to date and running quick. I need to thank him more.

Just a thought even though you are a nice "auntie" caution, unless you are a licensed tax person, you could get yourself in trouble. You are only puting in what she/he gives you and they may not be giving you either the right/all information. Also if you do someone's else taxes, you have to sign, with your tax number.

She sent me her one W-2 this year, which was for earnings of less than $2,000.

Somehow I don't see prison in my future for that. :-)

I'll remember Tax Act if she asks me to do her taxes again next year.

I don't think you'll go to jail either Rita but if you do I'll be your penpal, okay?

Just a thought: I don't think anything or anyone can charge to efile anymore Flamey. Our CPA charged us something like $25 the first year we filed electronically then had to stop because it was not legal. Not sure if this applies to software but CPAs cannot charge.

I use Turbo Tax and it is fast enough for my purposes, but then, I alway buy a copy and install it on my computer. I never connect to the internet when I'm inputting tax data and fiddling with different scenarios. Also, I file by mail thus avoiding the electronic filing charge and any hacker that may be snooping my data stream. For backup records, I keep a paper copy and all the work sheets and the computer files. After I've filed, I will archive Turbo Tax and all its files and remove it from the computer.

The main hassle I have is that the state code is not on the CD and must be downloaded from the web site. This takes forever over a dial-up connection. For those who have a high speed connection, this is not a concern.

I used Turbo-Tax the last 2 years but did mine with the tax program on the IRS site this year.It's free and works just as well as the ones you have to pay for and all the help and answers to any questions is right there.Online filing is free.You can get the upgraded version,(can't remember what the benefits are to that,LOL)for $9.95 I think.Just go to IRS.gov for the information.

I've used Free TAX USA the last 2 years. They do charge you but it's not bad. And they are very easy to use,quick, and I get my refund within 2 weeks.

I was using TurboTax today for my mother's taxes and it was very fast. I had it loaded on my computer though, not online.
