Ceiling wallpaper color? Need help.

I am a carpenter and am able to do almost anything. The only problem i have is when it comes to colors. I know what I like, but cannot decide what would look good. I created a coffered ceiling in my living room. The beams are white and the inset of the panels is a paintable wallpaper (tin ceiling design). What does anyone recommend as the color of the ceiling panels.

Gorgeous work and that type of paper is so nice. It would be helpful to know what you plan to do with the area, what does the furniture look like and what are some of your favorite colors. Do you have a color picked out for the trim yet?

Karen: which technique are you doing? Textured wallpaper over old wallpaper? Or one of the others? Rereading my post (after getting some sleep) it reads more like I am asking about texturing with drywall compound (like imitating venetian plaster, or a tuscan stucco look). PLEASE come back and tell me how it went! I have seen the paper bag technique done on home improvement shows. ItÂs actually simpler. Dipping in poly would be very messy and sticky. You adhere the paper with latex glaze or acrylic matte medium. Then cover with the same clear liquid to seal it in before painting. My hesitation with doing that is if someday down the road you didnÂt want such a texture, you could NEVER get it off. The entire room would have to be skimcoated by someone with the skills to get it really flat and smooth. I donÂt think I want to go that route. At least with drywall compound texturing it could be sanded off smooth easily.

oh gosh yes you can spend a fortune on a good paper like thibault, and thats not even talking about the installer. i'm not saying its not money well spent, but you dont want to be redoing it any time soon, if ever... i used to buy mid range papers and hang them myself. those were the days... now i have thibault in my dining room and 1. i hope i never get tired of it 2. i'm glad my husband never saw THAT bill. divide and conquer: how about just papering the wall with the two small windows? it's going to be difficult to 'decorate' that wall with art, having the paper might be just the thing.

I'm confused. Why do you need a rod pocket if your are using hooks and rings? I would get a linen in a color of the background. As much as I like orange, I think it will upstage the wall paper. Do you have to mount it on the outside, because the interior screen takes up the depth? Take a look on Vermont Country Store. Many of my rooms have curtains from them. I like these Sheers in Natural.

@Patricia Colwell, regarding the size of my light fixture, my table is 40x72” extending to 108”. the fixture is 16”x44”… by every guideline I found its within the parameters? It does provide plenty of light for the table and there are also the recessed lights there. regarding the window shades, they are top down-bottom up, usually we have the bottom half covered and top open, and coordinate with the adjacent space. I did work with a designer for these selections. the buffet cabinets are 30” tall on the 6” baseboard, we considered shorter cabinets but they looked very squat. i don’t plan or want to be opening and closing curtains at night, I dislike that look and I live in an urban area where the homes are very close together. not a fan of solar shades, they remind me of a restaurant. i do plan to add more color with art and other accents in the space- haven’t gotten there yet! @jck910 curtains have been rehung with rings so they are not touching ceiling now. i haven’t picked any mirror yet, just brainstorming ideas. i agree something vertical or perhaps a large round mirror…. not tackling that decision yet. i truly appreciate all of your inputs! my husband is no help at all.

The ceiling is gorgoeus, so I would want something that would stand out...maybe a copper metallic! ;o)

I am going with a "washed" style Maroon red wallpaper. The door and window trim will remain white as well as the beams.
Here is a sample of the wallpaper as well as a photo of the completed beams with unpainted paper.

That is a beautiful wallpaper. Warm gold is speaking to me...but need other opinions from the folks here. That room is going to look awesome.

I meant to also mention the Ralph Lauren metallic finishes, as you might like that kind of a look. The Internet doesn't do these justice, I suggest checking the paint chips out in the store...some of them are pretty amazing.

I'm not good with color, but wanted to let you know I love your ceiling! I want a cove ceiling so bad! How high are the ceilings? Maybe there's hope yet???? Were they very hard to build?

I decided to go with a Matching Maroon paint for the ceiling. I have done a Test area. The beams are not yet painted (just primed).

To answer your other questions... The ceilings are 8'6".
The construction was not difficult, just a lot of work. Lots of precise cutting, fitting and measuring. Its an old house and difficult to install square boxes into an unsquare room.

That will be very dramatic...it is fun watching your progress. I have some embossed paper (like the kind on your ceiling) that I plan to use under a chair rail whenever I refinish a section of my garage. Did you brush the edges and roller the interior using a thick nap roller?

I am not a decorator by any means. I hang paper and paint for a living. I think I would have picked out the goldy color in the paper for the ceiling. It is going to be a lot of the maroon but that is just my taste. It is going to look great no matter what you paint it.Is the paper a British pulp?

I agree with christophern -- I think a gold would look better.

Don't go TOO gold, or it will end up looking like the Palace of Versailles. An antique gold, or more bronze-y gold might be better. If it does come out looking too bright, you can always use a wash of water-base stain. ;o)

A light gold was my first suggestion, but hope you got a chance to check out the Ralph Lauren options, as I think they would add the bling to that gorgeous ceiling...but JMHO.
