Coffered Ceilings in 9' Kitchen -- Should we or shouldn't we?
Comments (26)I never expected such a strong reaction to a simple question. I think it is a matter of space, style, and personal preference. I suppose it doesn't fit into the OTK philosphy so you are walking a fine line! :) If you are considering it, just make sure the room is big enough to pull off the look, and also make sure there isn't too much going on elsewhere (no really ornate moldings on your cabinets). How about some very shallow ones like in this photo (this is what i'm considering for my great room/dining room combination which is 18'x34' with 12' ceilings. Comments (11)ffjunk, of course it's a personal choice, but thought I should add, we have a situation similar to yours, with a pass-through window between painted cabinets, as well as a pocket door between a cabinet and a cabinet pantry. Our cabinet crown molding, and our whole house crown molding are the same heights, but different cuts, so the choice was easier for us - keep the same crown molding throughout the kitchen, though it is open concept. We are using stop blocks at the pocket door crown as the pantry is a stained along with the crown molding above it, and the cabinet adjacent is painted, along with the crown above that. The trim around the door will be painted the same as the cabinet/cabinet crown molding. Our ceilings are 9'. We are also using a stop block where the whole house crown meets the kitchen cabinetry crown - it would be very difficult to both cope and scribe the crowns to match and we prefer the stop blocks. I don't have photos as we are still in the midst of remodeling and our cabinet maker has yet to bring and install the stop blocks....See MoreWhat size baseboard trim for 10ft ceilings with NO crown molding?
Comments (13)Charles Ross Homes- Thanks so much for the extra info on the need for tempered glass. I was originally going to do a semi circle type arch at the top, which was nearly $4,000 for that window section...so the 3 rectangles will be much cheaper overall. I am still debating if I want to do the full picture window from 7.5 inches from floor to my 96inch header...or do the awning window at the bottom. If I do the picture windows, the door directly to the left will have a retractable screen. We are building in woods, so there won't really be airflow, we just want to hear nature. ILOVERED-good point. My kiddos are older..and we would definitely babyproof for grandbabies...but there are so many other hazards that a locked window at that stage. Thanks to everyone for the calculations...I started with Google..but big difference between 5 and 8 inches!!! CP-Thanks for the photos. I'm thinking 1*8 for baseboard, 1*6 for above doors/windows and maybe 1*4 for the sides of my doors. I don't want anything too fancy. JuneKnow-Interesting. I pulled out all my crown molding and put 1*4 baseboard trim in my 8ft ceiling flip house. I like the nice look of the trim, but the cleaner look on the ceiling. I use to love crown molding...but I'm getting a little simpler in my tastes as I age. Still like nice and expensive...just a lot more things in my house to focus on than some crown molding 10 ft high....See MoreCabinet crown molding conundrum with lumpy ceiling
Comments (11)whats the final plan w lighting. be sure and not spotlight this .. adjustable trac ? or something else ? .In a way, I think an option may be to leave the trim off, and also because of texture at ceiling it's just something you don't need really. If you want trim I'd get a trim carpenter to look it over...point this out...they have solutions to ease the difference . don't worry about it. but consider omitting trim. I don't see any under cab lights....get a lot of focus there and at splash tiles and I think it will be forgotten about. WALLS including ceiling are never perfect. has ceiling received paint? flat ceiling paint /[no shine] will assist. we did something in a room where we placed some subtle texture on a ceiling because of a flaw . the installer said just the compound can be left but i painted w just cheaper walmart paint/flat/light color but not stark white . I remember the best/thickest nap roller I dared to handle helped ...the final result paid off. do you have a few more things to do w finishing the ceiling and lighting/etc???? . If you want to work w trim...I'd consider trim out around fridge side panels forward and across upper fridge cabinet and end it. simple right angle block trim and this will be intentionally set apart from long runs...as it is, anyway and so discrepancy wont matter. so there's a couple ways to deal w this. dont worry it'll be fine....See Morecabinfo
