FYI - It's 'Pie Day' on The Martha Stewart Show

Just turned on Martha & she is devoting the entire show today to pies. Two pro chefs are demonstrating their favorites & there is a pie contest going on w/ pies submitted from the studio audience. Tomorrow the winner will demonstrate how to make her/his pie.

It's been fun watching people from the audience describe the pies they submitted. I keep waiting to see someone from CF there!

I'm a pie lover (choose pie over cake every time, even on my BD)and am really enjoying the show. Thought some of you might want to catch it, too. Got to go see who wins!

I was watching it but my kids sidetracked me and missed the ending!! What pie won? I know I will miss the show tomorrow. I rarely watch Martha because that is Sesame Street hour but my other kids were home on a day off so they were all drawing and I did my own thing "gasp" for about 1/2 hour. You know, even though I think Martha Stewart is an anal nut, I kinda like her especially the way she ignores her guests and keeps on track with her own thing - it kills me. Great recipes and ideas though.

cookie8, don't know if you got to see the lady in red from Minn. who described taking her English Toffee Pecan Pie on the plane. Hers won.

This lady said she had been baking pies for more than 60 years. She was very animated and didn't seem the least bit intimidated being on TV & held her own taking questions from Martha. Her pie looked really good, but I wonder if part of the reason hers was chosen had a lot to do with her on-air personality, given that the winner will be baking her pie w/ Martha tomorrow.

I have had 2 instances where I was taped for a TV segment and, while I'm generally relaxed speaking in public, I got all tensed up and came across very zombie-like, lol. (Fortunately, one of the segments never aired) Some folks are just better in front of a camera than others. This lady should be interesting to watch and I'm guessing a lot of people might tune in just to see her.

This is a funny thread.......when I come in from gardening and look in the mirror on the back porch, sometimes I thank God no one stopped by to see me! I am not a pretty picture and I always manage to get dirt on my face... I think I have read that Martha's dad was a big gardener and they canned lots or all of their food and were made to work in the garden (as was I). I do admire her but always am amused at all the gardening shows where the ladies are wearing large lovely straw hats and simple little cotton shifts or khaki shorts and tees.......not a scene you will find in my yard and garden. I liked her old TV show, but hated her Yuppie magazine. My hands are always protected by Atlas gloves and a kind that violet recommended (I probably forgot to thank you violet) at our local farm supply store by Kinco for $2.95 which are a bit more heavy-duty. Hats make me crazy.

Not counting most treated/coated seed...or GMO... ...and for the home gardener, not commercial organic growers... Organic seed pretty much only matters if you're a purist or you want to spend the extra money to support those who grow organically and collect seed. There's nothing wrong with either of these stances, though not everyone falls into these camps all the time for every crop. ...some who eat microgreens or sprouts only want to use organic seed, but for the most part that's generally not much of a concern, especially for microgreens. As an aside, on the commercial scale there are no seed source exemptions for sprouts labeled organic...they must be grown from an organic seed source with no exemption exception available. When it comes to residues, you're broadly talking about 0-5 parts per billion of a given chemical contained in 2.5 to 5 grams of seed when ground and analyzed via chromatography depending on seed type and chemicals used when growing them. That's 0-5 ppb spread out over a huge chunk of home garden space given the typical weight of seed. The residues don't multiply within a plant when it's grown...a lot of it never makes it past the initial stages of growth in the seed (early roots and cotyledons) where it's quite small in concentration anyway. As far as what you're getting out of your own garden and putting into the soil...what really matters is what you've done to the soil and how you grow the seed way more than the seed, itself. Some (mostly purists) would disagree. That's up to them. Myself...I buy some organic seed from some suppliers because I don't mind throwing them a few extra dimes. I also do bean sprouts organically from seed because I eat a lot of them quite regularly and I have a cheap organic seed source. Aside from that, I don't bother or let it concern me. Technically, my use of a few tablespoons of chemical fertilizer a few times per year takes me out of the 100% organic realm on everything but my sprouts and microgreens, but I incorporate so many organic measures in my garden that I use it's not like I feel it's a "choose one side or the other" thing. Did not see it. People have used powdered cleansers like Comet which contain some dry bleach to disinfect rhizomes after rot has been removed. Dry sulfur has been used similarly I think. I have only used the Ajax powder and it works. Many recommend that newly obtained rhizomes be given a 10 minute soak in a bleach solution to kill any pathogens before planting them in your garden; A proper solution for disinfection is 1 part regular liquid Chlorine bleach in 10 parts water. Let the rhizomes dry out before planting. Do NOT use this for any beardless Iris. Chad

Well, she did call the police for a ride, but was most likely in panic mode. Police did not give her a ride, though (maybe they would've, I dunno): Her driver was ready to take her to the hospital. But if I were a TV personality, I would also be in panic mode about a cut so noticeably front-and-center. She wasn't in New York City at the time. She was at her home in Northern Westchester County -- a little less than an hour north of NYC, and I am familiar with the roads in that area, having lived in the Bedford/Mount Kisco area. They are winding and narrow (until you get to the main street in Mount Kisco, near the hospital), and if that snowstorm was getting heavy, I might've also called the police to ensure I could get to the hospital. (Not as bad as calling an ambulance, IMHO, and that's not a crime-filled area that it would've been a horrible thing to pull an officer off his/her patrol to take her there.) It also happened at night -- not during the day as someone else posted -- which makes driving on some of those roads a bit more treacherous. I'm sure that her house is off a winding one-lane road, for privacy's sake, much like other celebrities' homes there. I remember a shortcut I used to take that ran past a house (mansion, more like it) owned by Mariah Carey at the time; it's not one I took unless the weather and road was clear. Facial cuts? Yeah, I would want a plastic surgeon, too. They're not there just to do nose jobs and eyelifts. (The 40-something photos taken by Martha's stables manager, tho? That one of the wallpaper border cracked me up! I'll bet that person will soon be on Martha's PR team--altho I wonder if Martha herself hollered at her to grab the camera on the way out and "Photograph everything you see! I'll use it for my blog!") Bottom line? If there was a time to act like a diva, in her public-life circumstances, that was it.

English Toffee Pecan Pie

I do not watch Martha Stewart but it was on this morning and I took the day off (not feeling well) and the pie contest sounded interesting so I left it on.

Marjorie Johnson from Robbinsdale, MN won. She's quite a character. You might remember her from The Tonight Show when Jay Leno was on. She was a frequent guest and became a roving reporter for a while. She'd bake cookies and go interview a sports team or something like that. She has the metabolism of a hummingbird but has won over 2500 fair ribbons including over 1000 blue ribbons and many sweepstakes ribbons. She's a very modest person too, a real Minnesota sweetheart, and I was glad to see she won, but thought she would the way Martha was talking anyway. She'll be on tomorrow's show to show how to make the pie. Not sure if I'll be able to watch it but I might have to try. She's a 4'8" dynamo.

I tried to look for the recipe but I'm sure she's not allowed to give it out until the program airs so we'll see if MS puts it up or Marjorie puts it on her site.

cynic, Well, well, well.... That little lady looked very comfortable on camera and your post explains why. I hope I have even half that much enthusiasm and vigor when I am her age.

Since I have this job that pays for my farming habit, LOL, there will be no watching Martha Stewart.

The couple of times I've seen her on TV I just wanted to hunt her down and slap her, but I'm glad I saw this because I'll check for the pie recipe later on line!

I've never watched Jay Leno either, so I don't know about Marjorie. She has her own website?

What kind of toffee bits would you use, as called for in this pie recipe? individual toffee candies you would chop up ?

I would use the toffee bits stocked in the baking section of the supermarket (with the Nestles choc. chips). I think for this particular recipe you want the toffee without the chocolate coating you'd get by chopping up Heath or Skor bars.
