Stack subway tiles on wall instead of usual way?

MY KD has suggested stacked subway tiles instead of the more traditional way (the name of which I've forgetten). We will have one whole wall of tile so it's a very prominent feature. If any of you have pics of stacked subways, I'd so appreciate seeing them. Thanks, A.

Running bond, or brick joint. :-)

What about doing two DIFFERENT patterns? using a brick joint on the bottom, then a chair rail, or some sort of accent piece, and then the other pattern above? There are so many patterns you can do with this tile, it's unbelieveable. I have a feeling that if you do an entire wall in a stack bond that it's going to take on a look like a locker room. Please don't take offense at that. It's personal opinion, and we all know what that's worth. it's not often that I offer mine, but I've done enough commercial and institutional construction that I know what I'm talking about here. That said, though, if you like the idea, then by all means, don't let me talk you out of it! :-)

Running bond! Of course, I had brain freeze and couldn't pull it up. My concern is the same as yours. Locker room is not the look we're going for. I still wish I could find some pics as I'm a poor visualizer. Thanks for your help, Bill. A

It all depends on why that tile is cracked. if it's because of the mud bed behind it being cracked, thn that will have to be removed, as well, which means the whole thing comes down. Additionally, if you're trying to leave part of it up, and only replace some of the tile, you're going to have a tough, if not impossible, time matching up tile. White is one of the toughest colors to match. There are just too many variables that can influence the shade of white. Also, you can bet that the tile was, at one point, adhered to the mud bed. It was not stacked free-floating, away from the mud. My suggestion would be to take all the tile down, make sure the mud bed is still in good shape, and then install the whole wall. As for the mud cap at the top, I know for sure that both Daltile and American Olean carry mud cap pieces for their subway tile lines.

This is such a great thread!! I really like the idea of vertical subways and then accent glass tiles running vertically in the shower to simulate the waterfall (I saw metalic ones this way in a video on the HGTV site). I have a small city bathroom so not much room to play with. My mind in dancing around this idea but if I did that then the only 'wow' would be that one vertical stripe within the shower. (All four walls will be tiled since the moisture situation makes this the only real choice so that leaves painting the walls outside the shower not an option.) If I go the traditional horizontal subway tile route with an accent strip all around the whole bathroom then the 'wow' is everywhere but the overall looks isn't as modern as I'd like. I really like the modernness of the vertical layout but how can I incorporate the glass tiles elsewhere besides the one vertical stripe in the shower? Anyone have any creative ideas?

I just want to update for 2019 and say that Marazzi has moved to new ownership recently, and I've seen reviews around the web about people complaining that there is an increased grayish tint to some of the tiles with more recent production beginning around 2018. @bill_vincent stated back in 2009 in a previous comment in this thread that the Marazzi tile he'd used wasn't always square, but we had tile layers this year who recommended it as a good-quality tile, so your mileage may vary. Upon visiting a Marazzi showroom in my area, I was very impressed with the variety and style of the tile on display. Thanks for all the comments here on Florida Tile. I believe I'll avoid it based on these reviews. We used Italian-made Happy Floors tile for a recent master bathroom project and are pleased with it. The installers said it was very square, and the style we chose was a through-body porcelain. Every word-of-mouth recommendation and online review I've read about USA-made Crossville tile has been good. Apparently they have a strict system of quality control. The one complaint is that it can be expensive compared to similar tile in other lines. However, the finish coating on some of Crossville's products is supposedly high-tech to make it more cleanable and long-lasting, so maybe it would be worth it. We've found that our area ProSource seems to offer the best price on Crossville and runs periodic sales on it. Note that there is more than one tile company with the name "Crossville," referencing the location of the city of Crossville, Tennessee, where these companies are located, but I'm talking about Crossville Inc. also known as Crossville Studios. It appears that Dal-Tile's quality is across the board and varies from style to style. Thanks everyone for the input.

Sherriz. I absolutely love your kitchen design, color, lighting, faucet, hardware, hood! It is so so so beautiful. I was just in the Circa showroom drooling over your island lights. I wanted to use them in my upstairs hall but this size too large, and small too small. Perfection in your kitchen though. Love every square inch! Thanks for sharing this pic. I haven't been on GW in awhile so I missed your kitchen if you recently posted. awesome! Sandn, new glitch re: when tile goes in. My builder built a scaffolding over my soapstone so the tile guy wouldn't have to stand on stone, which would mean he will have to start 4 inches above the counter since this "thing" is screwed into the wall. I know GC meant well but it is too obtrusive to work around and tile person would have to come back and do the bottom section next day, adding another day to labor etc. So he is upcharging $400 for another day. Searching for another tile person and retro fitting the scaffold to work better. thanks y'all! d

This is just one possibility, and for a kitchen wall, I'd probably suggest the transition from one pattern to the next be much lower (like at about 36" from the floor), but this is a shower I did a couple of years ago for someone over in the bathrooms forum. Bottom's running bond, and the top, diagonal herringbone:

It means just what it sounds like-- stacking them in rows, like most square tiles, instead of like bricks.

We're doing something I saw in an issue of Kitchen and Bath Ideas last year. Subway tiles in the running bond pattern (on the upper wall) with 6x6 in a typical grid pattern below, separated by a chair rail. In my inspiration pic, the squares were smaller, probably 3x3, but since my crackle tiles come in 6x6 I'm going to do that instead (plus, they are a bit less $ than the 3x6 subways.)

In my kids' bath I'm doing it the opposite-- 3x6 subways to wainscot height, capped with a chair rail, and then only in the tub area 6x6 above.

I hope it looks nice!

Do you ever watch the Brother's and Sister's TV show? Sally Field's character's kitchen has a subway tile pattern I was going to copy but I ended up picking a different backsplash. It isn't quite a running board pattern but similar.

Love that kitchen on Brother's and Sister's. I'm always trying to pick up details. There used to be a website that gave you a 360 degree tour, but the only site I can find now doesn't show the whole kitchen anymore.

I remember that website and pics. I couldn't find it either. But I dvred the show, just so I could pause scenes in the kitchen. *blush* I love the sets on that show.
