any one else have thermatru exterior doors?
Comments (36)Beware. If you had a mahogany stain kit for therma tru entry door, the color has been changed. In other words, the old mahogany is not the same as the new one. About 5 years ago, therma tru changed the Mahogany color. My problem is that when I ordered a new Mahogany Kit to refinish my 5 year old door, the new mahogany is much redder than the original. Wish they had told me when I ordered it. To make matters worse, the company rep indicated that they do not offer the old Mahogany color and would not recommend any of their current colors as a match. I was told to go out and find another brand of Oil based stain that matches my door and use that. If you have a therma tru mahogany stain on your door and it is more than 5 years old, do not use the new Mahogany stain kit as the colors at not the same!!!!!!...See MoreWhat can I put over Thermatru finish?
Comments (4)Thanks - Thermatru says no sanding b/t coats, but I had to sand the top of the bottom sash, it was so bad. Hoping to avoid sanding the windows so much. Guess I'll put another coat on today (again, they recommend 3 hrs b/t coats but now it'll be 18). I know I should continue with waterbased, but was wondering at this point if I could just use a waterbased Minwax wipeon poly (after sanding) that won't show brush marks? Or do I have to stay with Thermatru? I might do the garage window (like attic, full soffits, but gets much colder) with Thermatru, but I've decided I don't want to use this on interior (conditioned space) windows, UV inhibitors or no. Any recommendations for those windows? I've done the jambs and sills in Minwax oilbased Wipeon poly (3 coats). Thanks...See MoreGel Stains
Comments (16)Okay, I'm committed to do it. Three little questions. The door has very little fiberglass area to stain as it has an oval leaded glass window. The perimeter of the window is not fiberglass, but what appears to be a type of plastic/pvc frame. Will that accept stain in the same way as the fiber glass, or should it be painted as though it were trim? And: since the inside of the door will also be stained, does the entire jam get stained? The homeowner wants the trim and inner jamb painted the trim color and just the background area of the door and sidelights to be stained.. Will this look odd? I'm guessing that the sides(inner and outer edges of the door) are also stained, right?...See MorePaint or Stain the Front Door?
Comments (25)I didn't care for the Thermatru stain (found a returned kit at HD) - too thin - and definitely prefer Cetol to the Thermatru top coat. Cetol held up much better to sun and rain than the sample (wood) I did with Thermatru. Thermatru's is water-based, Cetol is oil-based and I guess maybe I'm just biased - I don't think there is such a thing as a good exterior water-based clear coat. Faron recommended the Cetol so that's what I used. I only bought the kit (wrong stain color) for the sample FG piece and the brushes, but the brushes were cheap too. Didn't have luck with Minwax gel (too thick) but as baby bear said, the Zar was "just right!" - a neighbor used it (different color) with great results on his FG door, so I took his recommendation. I know a lot of people use gel stains, but I think the gels might just all be too thick for a novice to use on FG, the Zar went on like paint and was very easy to dry brush. As it says in the link, it's all in the technique....See More2ajsmama
