Paint bubbles on bathroom ceiling

My bathroom does not have an exhaust fan, I am in the process of installing a Panasonic right now.

On the ceiling I have 3 bubbles in different areas, since I have plaster ceilings (rock lath) I assume the bubbles are just paint. The ceiling was painted less than a year ago by the previous owner. I don't beleave there is a leak from above (attic above my condo), I assume the bubbles are from the humidity of my hot showers.

If anyone knows about this I would appreciate some feedback. Hopefully the exhaust fan will stop more bubbles from developing, but I need a way to get rid of the ones that I have.

Is the bubble skin firm or flexible?

Push a pin in the bubble. Is there water in it?

If there is water in it, it need to be peeled away, allowed to dry, repaired, primed over and repainted.

The bubble is flexible.
There is no water in it.

I is supposed to rain this weekend so I will be able to check out the attic to be sure there are no leaks. But I don't think there are any.

The shellac primer will act like a coat of straight shellac and form a coating which when the gases (alcohol or moisture) try to escape, it forms bubbles like you described. There are probably more bubbles that you can't see or feel; that caused the paint to fail in that area. He doesn't know where the gases came from and whether or not it will happen again. We are newbies at these old houses, but we would sand, reprime and paint again. And hold our breath that it doesn't happen again. Maybe someone else can chime in here.

"I'm told that it will just suck up the moisture if I do." If it was the guy who applied the drywall mud who said this, then I would say shower elsewhere. When my shower was out of commission, I had to go to the gym, so having another shower in the same house is a real easy fix.

As localeater mentioned "Are you going to run the black hex up the wall behind the tub?" to which I'll add and everywhere else the vinyl is now? Or perhaps a different tile in those areas? That would be a big determinant regarding colour.

Blistering / Bubbling paint in the bathroom

The bathroom was renovated it 1 years ago and was painted using Regal Paint from Benjamin Moore. The painter was supposed to use a special bathroom paint from BM " Aura Bath Paint since our bathroom does not a window- we installed a sky light and the strongest fan inside. We found out later he did not use the Aura Paint. I noticed there were some blistering paint outside the shower wall ( plumbing was the opposite site) we checked our meter- checked the rest of the wall- there are no sign of leaking. We followed the direction on how to fix the blistering and the weather was hot and humid on all the times: 1st time: sand, clean, use primer (left over), and paint (left over)- we used the bathroom on the same day-the paint were blistering again and this time spread to a different areas. 2nd time: sand, clean, primer- we let it dry for 1 day and we painted the next day- a week later - they blistering (spreading) again. 3rd time: we got a different primer-KILL Z- repeated the step on #2- The areas we fixed were OK_ but now some blistering are shown at different areas. We are running out of ideas- really trying not to REDONE the whole wall since the photo 3 - the blistering spread to a different section of wall. If we have to REDONE, can someone give us what products we have to use and maybe trying to find the culprit? I assume it could be just too humid, and my husband has not opened the sky lights but the fan has been running at extended timer after using the shower.

TWO COATS of finish-paint!!
Let the fan run during AND 10 minutes AFTER shower is done too!!

I think your guess is absolutely correct. This condo was completely re-done by the original before I bought it, but I keep finding a lot of small issues that show poor workmanship.

As for the ceiling, I know this might sound lazy, but I really suck at painting. I would have to hire someone to come in and do what you said in order to fix it and make it look good. Is there any other way to get rid of the bubbles, at least for the time being until the ceiling really needs a new coat of paint?

* All it takes is good products/tools, AND...
* A willingness to do some sanding (FUN...I know!).
* We'll all try and save you a few $$....BUT Paintguy may give you a discount?!?!?
* Your being able to post pix here is a big help in diagnosing any issues too.

(I just wish the phrase "totally redone" actually meant something GOOD most of the time...! Kinda like the "put a quick coat of paint on the barn b4 it falls down!" argument!!)
