Pix of your open shelves?

When I moved into this home, the kitchen had been remodeled a few years ago - traditional cherry, nicely done, but not my style.

Well, I had along list of stuff to remodel, and we decided we could live with the kitchen - lots of people love it, the layout is okay, and it would be very costly to re-do. Gotta pick your battles!

Anyway I am on the tail end of remodeling the master bath, closet and we added some skylights in the great room and removed some paneling and did paint. Flooring starts next week.

Since I was tiling, I took out the 6" granite backsplash in the kitchen and did some beige glossy subway to transitional-ize the kitchen and it worked pretty well.

One of the glass inserts in one of the cabinets became loose, fell and broke, so we took off the doors to that cab and have been living with it during this remodel.

Now I'm thinking that it doesn't look bad. Maybe I'll remove the hinges and put some colorful Fiesta in there and leave it open.

Can I see some of your door-free cabs?

I have been looking at Ina's kitchen for inspiration lately and it has me thinking about open shelves as well. I'm just not sure I'll know how to situate the items on the shelves to make them look pretty.

When we first moved into our house, there was an awkward upper cabinet in a corner which I could not get into because after the door was opened, I had to reach around it to put anything it. We took the door off and stored our Fiestaware in it. I liked it so much that when we remodeled our kitchen I put it doorless upper cabinets for storing dishware and glasses.

Here is a picture of the one we store our Fiestaware in now.

-Valences could go above the doors. Either at a typical height or else positioned a bit higher so that the bottom on the valence only just reaches the top of the door/windows (and both permitting the view of the outside and making the window look bigger) - You could put curtains in between the window/door sections (as though they were curtaining off more window, but really just curtaining off wall). you would need them at the far end also, and would likely need to use smaller supports. You could probably use the curtains you have there now if you loosened the tie at the top of them so that they hang like regular curtains against the wall. -The bookshelves stick out a bit. Perhaps if you painted them to match the floor?

Geezelouise, all your hutches are so pretty! (Sigh!) After seeing the hutches here, I want to just gut mine and have it totally rebuilt. Acountryfarm, please post more pics of your home as you complete it, will you? Your built-ins are wonderful! We had a smallish built-in hutch put is when this place was built 15 yers ago. It really needs to be replaced or updated, but, after living through a complete kitchen gut and reno last Autumn, I'm so NOT ready to live with a work crew again for a long while! The cabinet guy gave me a quote for a much bigger one in the same cherry cabinetry as our kithen cabs: $16,500 . . . not including labor! Needless to say, we passed. But, I am ready for a small DIY revamp on it this Autumn. What I like about mine is the Talavera tile counter top and it's pull-out shelves below. What I want to change is . . . everything else (LOL)! I'm going to restain it a mahogany to better match the new table. Hopefully add lights to the insides; change out the wood shelves for glass for better showcasing my antique china. I dislike the upper doors as they hide too much of my china. I'd like to replace them. My two big shallow drawers hold napkins, which is nice. Just things to consider when you're out looking for a hutch for your own dining room. I wish I would have spent more time planning mine before we committed!

pps7 thank you. that looks beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. That color blue really looks great. I was originally going to do floated but since the placement of everything was tentative when we ripped out the walls, I went with keep it simple "we'll deal with it later". Also one of the walls where I am placing them from floor to ceiling had plaster that couldn't be chipped out. I will put the brackets into the wall when I get a house though... I can't wait to buy and get these shelves up so I can find all my dry goods. One thing at a time though...first I need to take care of the counters and can't do that until I buy an undercounter fridge... Did you have them scrape them to bring up grain ?(it is add'l charge)

Thanks folks.

Ina's kitchen is lovely. I'm thinking open shelving with colorful items in them would help modernize and funkify my overall look. Is funkify a word? Heh.

We did open shelves, or really just the boxes without doors. :) They frame our window wall and I didn't want anything that looked heavy. I keep our everyday plates and bowls on one side. Then mostly just decorative stuff. It's easy enough to dust with a Swiffer duster and then every once in awhile I take it all down and clean it good.

I love open cabs and shelves, some really pretty examples above. If it helps I've also posted a photo of a long stretch of open shelves in my kitchen. This area is used more for cooking stuff as opposed to dishes. I like open cabs and shelves, but then again my kitchen is a separate room so I don't have to worry as much about whether the stuff on the shelves looks organized or not :-)
