Go figure---new dogs like roach baits!

We live in a mobile home park. Occasionally a neighbor is less than diligent about household cleanliness---and then disappears into the might. Leaving a problem. We have lived here over 20 years and expaeienced this problem four times now.

Old dogs never bothered the black plastic baits. The kind that have bait that the bug takes back to the nest/group.

My two new dogs love them. This morning, I set out twenty baits---and put six in the open places--behind the trash can bin, behind the bedroom TV table, inside the closet doors, etc.

I took a nap and arose to find chewed remnants of bait plastic!!! And two dogs(70-80 pounds) with freshly polished halo's.

Know what to give a dog to make them regurgitate? Me neither---never had to. Ipecac works for kids---learned that the hard way years ago.

Called my vet---she said give them hydrogen peroxide. About two to three tablespoons full for my sized dogs. One dog lapped it up---he eats anything---even onions if he can. The other---no way! So, plastic syringe, 3 tablespoons---approximately---and squirt it into his mouth. I used to paste worm horses---same thing.

Oh---ah---one important thing----do this outside. You will thank yourself if the need ever arises.

Both are doing just fine.

Have had dogs all my life---first time any ever ate roach motels!!

I'm not sure what we're debating... whether or not dogs like roach baits?
I'm glad your dogs survived tho and are doing ok after eating them.

Jude: You're going to have challenges with warm weather crops if you're on the coast. Not that you can't, just compared to East County, production will be limited. You might want to call the master gardener's extension and ask them what varieties do well there or call Walter Andersens's in Point Loma. regarding the lacewings, I'm going to order online from rincon-vitova. I called City Farmer's Nursery(usually very helpful) and great organic product. And they said that they could order lacewings for me but then left me on hold so I just decided I'll get them online. Also, I had problems with ladybugs taking off also until this year-- they came to me! I attribute this to creating an environment for the adults to propagate by planting beneficial attracting flowering plants that flower at different times of the year. Research IPM(Integrated Pest Management) and you'll learn loads. I'll attach a link of some general plants you may want to plant. The cantaloupes -- a far amount is fruiting right now and have already picked about a half dozen. I just don't know if the plants are going to be able to hold out from the damage I exposed them to. We have 'woods cockroaches' around here, they are awful things! They don't eat food, but love moist places. We saw them living between the lumber when we were building our house. I've seen them outside in the woods. YUCK! They are icky, and I think they love to live under my potted plants. In fact I've seen them scurrying away when I move my pots...ICK!!! Lucky they aren't the food roaches, I guess that would be so much worse, YUCK...I hate roaches!! Bleech! Yes, make sure they aren't in the soil. I told my DH I'm going to change the soil this year before I move my plants back inside for the fall/winter. Roaches, EEEEEEWWWWWW!!!!!! ICK ICK ICKY!!!!!!!!! BTW, I dont' mind spiders and other creepy crawlies..just roaches.

The best means of controlling roaches, whether wood, American, German, or whatever, is Boric Acid powder sprinkled where they are living. Most all of the expensive, commercial controls contain Boric Acid. However, the single best wat to keep them from wandering around your house during the day is to seal any and all means of entry they can use to gain access to your house.

mboston, I am very sad to hear your dil lost the baby. Personally, I don't believe the chemicals won't hurt pregnant women or their babies, and it would have infuriated me to hear the guy say such an inane thing. I'm not blaming the chemicals for the miscarriage, but I know they are very toxic. When I was pregnant with my second son and dh and I were renting an apartment near Fort Benning, not far from Florida (he was in the military then), renters who had filthy living habits moved in above our apartment. They moved out a few months later without giving any notice and were gone a few weeks before the landlord realized it. In that period of time, their apartment became a roach haven - it was horrible. And of course when that apartment became empty, the roaches all came to live with us - YUCK! I spent many evenings spraying and swatting them, then I began to feel sickly, was having problems breathing, was having nightmares about them, so I had to quit. At my next OB visit, the doctor told me NOT to be anywhere near any roach-killing chemicals. The landlord ended up calling a professional exterminator (yes, he should have done that right away) and also put us up in another apartment until the roaches were gone. I think my doctor's written statement motivated him to do that, as I was still in my first trimester. It seems the seller should bear some (the lion's share, actually) of the responsibility in this case. I would check into your local laws to see what can be done. You've already received great advice about how to kill the roaches. I do hope this is resolved quickly.

We live in a Mobile home park as well and I have the outside of my house sprayed by a exterminator any time anyone nearby moves or even if they pull a mobile out past mine. The first time I found those nasty little critters on my deck it was from a guy 2 houses down and across the road moving, didn't know they would travel so far! I keep my bases covered now, I can't stand those bugs!
I am glad your dogs are okay, that could of been really bad, I would of been freaking out if I caught my dogs chewing on one of those.

Look at the directions. They'll advise you to keep away from pets and children.

Yeah, I knew that. Never had a problem with the other dogs doing this---even as pups. Most of the baits are out of their reach---but those six were in places where I put them when the previous dogs were here.

My basic reason for posting this was to remind folks it is possible things will be different with different dogs.

My dog just ate a Combat roach bait tray. I looked up the active ingredient, Hydramethylnon, up online and found this info...

Vomiting and gagging are the most common signs reported in dogs with oral ingestions of hydramethylnon. Emesis would only be necessary if large amounts (greater than 1 ounce of bait/kg) were ingested. According to the manufacturer of CombatÂ® Roach Control System (1.65% hydramethylnon) a medium-sized (20 kg) dog would experience adverse effects from the bait itself only after eating an amount equivalent to 250 trays. Mechanical obstruction may be seen if the dog ingests the control system (plastic).

I found most of the plastic, my vet says that it's probably too late to make her vomit because we've been gone for 6 hours and we don't know when she ate it. She was mostly worried about the plastic too. I thought we had those baits hidden well. I'll feel better tomorrow, when I'm sure that my dog is ok.
