Help me put lipstick on this pig? (Exterior)
Comments (40)Thanks so much everyone! I'm reading this instead of doing my statistics midterm...so maybe that's a thanks? Instead of a thanks! Ha ha! Anyway, this year's budget is about $2k which could stretch to cover new stairs or new railings but wouldn't extend to porching out the roofline unless I learn some carpentry skills really quick. I completely 100% agree that adding a porch over the front door would be amazing. I live in a rainy climate and it is so much more welcoming that way. I totally dream of a front porch so maybe I should look into making it happen. circuspeanut and GreenDesigns, thanks so much for your photoshops. I do love the longer hat! I think I may have made a mistake by making it so high contrast ... maybe a darker beige would be better than charcoal. I have an idea involving doing the porch and the hat in one color on vinyl shake, and leaving the bottom and the side the beige. Let me think on it...but don't let me photoshop it tonight! My midterm is due at midnight. Although I like colored trim, there is no way I would paint cheap vinyl trim, thereby removing its only bonus (low maintenance) but maybe I can go shopping and see if there are multi-colored trims available? I kind of like the look of a white trim with just a little black square around it. Very tailored. I'm mixed on the barn boards. I like the look of them online but am unsure if they fit with the decided charmlessness of my builder-grade beige vinyl -- I love them on houses with shakes! Replacing and reframing the front door is probably out of the budget. Unless I could get one the same width but with skinny sidelights on either side... Ok - what if the darker brown parts were coordinating vinyl shakes? Man I wish my roof were more peaked. Comments (25)wow, thanks everyone! great advice! there is an overwhelming number of votes for going darker. and it makes a lot of sense to pick the cabinet color based on the tile and not the wall colors. greendesigns, thanks for all the beautiful pics. i think the wood looks really nice. localeater, thanks for the tip on the larger paper samples. i never knew they had those. i will have to ask for them at the paint store. i will look for a darker gray or maybe doing dark wood stain. i loved the Fieldstone color after seeing the Sally Wheat kitchen and always wanted to try having gray cabinets, but it sounds like it may not work for me. i will try out a sample just to see though. thank you everyone!...See MoreOpinions on exterior trim sizes and layouts, show me yours
Comments (37)Even though the original post is 5y old, I still found it very useful for our project. We are using Maibec modern profile in Thunder Sky (intense blue) with white trim so it is very similar to your project. I was wondering how the trim pieces on the window should go and I think it's mostly answered here. We are fortunate that my sister-in-law used the same siding and trim a few years ago (green and cream instead of our blue and white) and we have the same contractor. But her cottage is more 1920s style and using the Maibec Cove profile. We're trying to decide if we want the sill to project 1" outside of the side trim and if we do that, should the top and bottom trim match the sill? We're going to mock up some trim in scrap lumber to see how it will look. We have the Maibec trim now...nominal 4" (3-5/16") for side and bottom trim, nominal 5" (4.5") for top. Sill is 5/4" so under the window will be 1/4" wider than above the window. Today is Friday, Oct 1, 2021 and the trim starts going up on Monday. The cottage is called Cliffside, for reasons that are more apparent from the back. edit: I tried to include photos but they don't show up with the post....See MoreHelp me pick exterior paint colors?
Comments (90)I'm still at it ya'll. My GC just met with a second painting contractor today, so I expect we'll get a quote soon. (Just in time for me to go out of town for a bit too.) I've acquired a truly absurd number of paint samples, and now possess both sherwin williams and ben moore fan decks:) I would have done better to just choose from the limited Hardie colors. (tone is hard to convey on the internet, this is all in good humor, with me more or less mocking myself). The good news is, I know what I want to do! (hurrah!) I found a new inspiration picture, and both DH and I went "aha, that's it." The previous photos are fine, but this is the one we both definitely like the best: there are a bunch more photos of this house here - http://www.houzz.com/projects/1042760/burwood-custom-home-grand-rapids-mi I didn't think I wanted to go dark with our black metal roof, but there it is, the first color scheme we're both happy about. I think there will still be enough contrast. They claim the color above is Ben Moore Kitty Gray 1589. So, here are some samples: Sorry about the mud splash, should probably clean that off. From left to right: 1) SW dovetail 7018 2) SW gauntlet gray 7019 3) BM Kitty Gray 1589 *- the one in the insp photo above 4) BM quarry rock 1568 5) BM knoxville gray HC-160 So, internet house color support group, what say you? Kitty gray does not look as vibrant (dark, saturated?) to me in real life or in the photos as it does in the inspiration picture. It looks more gray, as opposed to having some dark blue/green. However, I think I'm just going to stop thumb sucking and pick this color. quarry rock has more green knoxville gray is fairly saturated in real life. it really might be dark teal. maybe that's good, I dunno. Then I have to decide a trim color, whether to paint a contrasting trim around the windows, and what color to paint the garage doors. Whew! getting closer:)...See Morechispa
