Hunting Tame Animals?

Did anyone notice the latest "update" on the story about the kid who shot a huge "wild hog"? Turns out the "wild hog" was hand-raised and was recently sold - to a game farm. Then, "hunted" and killed. Guess the hog was too big for the original owners (who obviously let him get that big) and had no value for them than to sell him to the only bidder. Once the new owner "released" the hog, it was immediately classified as feral.

I'm interested in viewpoints about this legal practice of hunting tame animals. I know this happens to animals all the time. They out-live their original purpose, (whether it be too old to be a zoo exhibit, not performing correctly for a circus, not good for meat slaughter, etc.) and are then sold to game farms and "hunted."

Please know I'm not interested in viewpoints about hunting in general. I'm not against hunters who hunt wild animals and who use the meat they get. I am, however, suspect of people who pay to hunt an animal who has no chance, is usually within a fenced area and has very little fear of humans.

Any thoughts?

Killing a tame/domesticated animal in an enclosure is slaughter not hunting.

Similar to a the slaughter of beef or pork...

That is not hunting....that is simply killing. Wrong on all counts....but especially in this case where a young child was the one being taught that killing a tame animal just to get your name in the paper is perfectly OK. That makes me sick.

Thanks all for the Replies. I forgot to mention that this is my first year gardening, so I'm a bit on the beginner side. My first gardening area just turned out too small, then the second area wasn't enough. So I made a third, fourth and a fifth. I have crops all over the place (they do look great). That is why the fence idea was ruled out, just too much ground to cover. The other day, I caught him going into my shed. I closed the door on him and tried to figure out how I was going to remove him without having to kill it. Well, next thing I know, he somehow pushed the shed doors open (it was latched) and escaped. I have a burrow in my yard, I believe that the shed and my yard is their vacation home. Their place of residence is my neighbors yard. I could always lay stone all the way around my yard, but I would need a lot. (its at least close to 1000 feet of fence. I'm going to get a trap and trasfer them to a much nicer place far away from my garden.

When we bought our house in the country last year, the previous owners asked if we minded them leaving "a couple of cats". Well, the "couple" turned out to be 5: a neutered male, an un-neutered male, and 3 un-spayed females!! Three litters were born before we could take care of business. The first, poor things, must have died from exposure. I made it a point to handle all the other kittens on a daily basis so they wouldn't be wild. Locally they do a free Spay-Neuter Clinic and I figured I'd take them all in to that. Unfortunately it fell through and I ended up having our vet spay/neuter the lot of them! Eleven cats! We've only lost one and we think an owl grabbed her because they all stay pretty close to home. From a personal standpoint, I'd just as soon foot the bill for the spay/neuter. There are always plenty more cats at the Humane Society should our hard-working crew thin out over time! The males are all big babies and we don't have to worry about cat fights because of too many raging hormones. :)

There is one other place I know of you are likely to read about composting animals. The humanure handbook website forum. It wasn't till I started humanure composting that I learned how to get a really good hot compost pile that would easily handle rotting carcass and control smell and other animals digging it up. So what have we composted. I really can't even count the bones and scraps of animals we have eaten since we always compost all food scraps that don't go to the chickens or worm bins. It is a firm rule here to avoid putting anything stinky in the trash can. So, animal bodies in our compost bin lately. 3 sick chickens we didn't want to make the rest of the flock sick. Any dead squirrels we find around the house. 12 rats we caugh And all fish parts that the chickens don't get, I've found that burying fish parts causes critters to dig up the yard or whatever plant I put over it so composting seems to be the best way for use to take care of it. I agree that this is an advanced composting thread. No one who is not confident of their ability to manage a hot compost pile should be putting dead bodies in it.

My house and lawn used to be nothing but kudzu and pine trees. One full acre worth. I had the lot cleared and pine trees cut for $1500 back 15 years ago. I had centipede grass rolled out for an instant lawn and planted 400 azaleas in the beds. I had fought the kudsu for two years in the azalea beds using all kinds of techniques. I first started with round up at reccomended strength for kudzu. I learned that in order to kill kudzu with round up you have to have a large amount of leaves and a long vine to kill the root. Spray all of the leaves and make sure you add a little bit of liquid dish detergent in the solution so it will stick to the leaves well. Once the leaves were dry, I watered like crazy which sped up the process of killing the kudzu plant. As for the other vines that came up that were not very long, after I sprayed with round up the vine shrivelled up and a new one came up. I ended up just digging the root out of the ground. A kudzu root looks like a human arm and is just as big. Anyway After digging up several roots I have had no other problems with Kudzu. As for the sod laid lawn, I had a couple of shoots come up, but after several mowings I never had a Kudzu issue. Looking at your situation, I would wait till spring when the kudzu starts growing and just spray the heck out of the area with round up. Then when the kudzu appears dead, just clear the area. If this is not an option then this winter clear the area and plant winter rye to prevent any type of erosion. Then this spring watch for any kudzu to come up and just dig the root right out of the ground. Do this for a month and you should have the problem solved, then plant what ever you want to plant.

I can't say as that I see the "sport" in hunting an animal like that. As Sheltie Mom said I'm not against anyone hunting when the animal is used for food instead of a trophy. I don't quite understand what you mean tho by the original owner letting him get that big. There are breeds of hogs that routinely grow to 800-1000 pounds or more if they live to adulthood. I do think that the owners selling him to that place to be hunted is equally as disgusting as the people hunting him.

Poor Fred was a pet. From what I read, he loved to be hand-fed sweet potatoes. He wasn't a danger to anyone. I also find it troubling that this kid was allowed to take several hours and 8 or 9 shots to kill Fred. From what I've heard, hunting ethics dictate a clean, fast kill. And I am also disgusted by Fred's former owner who, according to the article below said: "... the pig was too big and needed killing". What the heck is that supposed to mean?? Once an animal gets bigger than you want it to, it needs to be killed??

I don't understand how hunters are so proud of themselves... did the poor animal have a gun or weapon? I do still eat meat so I can't condemn hunters too strongly, but I know I couldn't do it myself. I think that people who kill tame animals or kill them just for "fun" (not for food) should be punished severly. I know a poster on this forum has been attacked (rightly so) for killing cats that come into his yard. Don't understand how some people think that it is okay to kill things that they think are inferior just because it makes them feel better. Yuck!

Canned hunts are not hunting and are cowardly and lazy. I'm not a hunter but live in the mountains where the hogs and deer are hunted. They aren't so easy to get if they are really hunted. I work in a feed store where a man came in and asked what do deer like I sold him corn oats and barley with molasses and a salt block. There are alot of people who feed deer because they like seeing them and watch the fawns grow up. I started loading the feed in his truck and had a funny feeling about it. Just before he left I told him its illegal to bait deer. The look on his face told it all.

Hunting within the legal seasons as a way of controlling the herds of wild animals and saving them from starvation is quite different from shooting a tame, hand-feed animal. I don't know how anyone can call that hunting. It's not even humane slaughter for meat. This situation teaches that young man nothing of value and it makes me sick to learn the true facts.

Canned hunts are disgusting. Encouraging a small child to spend hours shooting at a tame former pet is disgusting.

I dont think I was ever "attacked" for shooting those stray cays which were damaging my property!? Some one merely had a different view on the subject and expressed it. A couple more need to go soon, the neighbor boy has pledged to take care of them. protectiung property is not at all the same as hunting for food or shooting animals in caged hunts.

This incident was not hunting, and any boar/hog hunter would have known upon sight of the animal that it was not wild. It was obvious that he'd been fed. The whole thing got me PO'ed.

Yeah, it takes a "real Man' or "some kind of woman" who need to kill a tame or penned animal to feel important. Case in point.. the guy named Gentry of the country duo of Montgomery Gentry, paid to kill a bear that had been raised as a pet. I read he is an abid trophy hunter and had a lot of his victims stuffed and mounted in his "trophy room" I wonder how many of these animals were eaten by him?????

Exactly. I've seen videos of even worse than that, though. Big African cats chained up, and shot while on their chains. For a fee. To me that's just murder.
