I am not sure that a rug makes sense with the way the seating area is divided by the entry into the room.

If I might suggest, I would re-arrange the furniture to create a more connected seating area, then decide whether a rug was really needed.

If it were me, I would move the TV down to the end wall, where the torchiere lamp is now. I know that you have baseboard heating there, but you should be able to put the armoire there with no problem. Put the Poang chair to the left of the armoire, angled toward the fireplace a bit, with one of the small end tables beside it and the torchiere behind it. Put the couch on the long wall opposite the fireplace, and the loveseat across the room at a right angle to that, facing the end wall where the tv has been placed.

This will create a cohesive seating area with your large pieces. The armoire also won't be floating and blocking off the room, but will be sitting against the tall wall to help break up the large expanse of wall space. You will also open up the space visually to the sliding door and attractive office area. Then, if you want to place a rug to pull things together, the largest seating pieces are in the same area, perhaps can share a larger coffeetable, etc. It will also bring the Poang chair into the seating group, rather than having it kind of stuck behind the loveseat. Since that is such a comfy chair, I am guessing it might end up being the favorite seating spot for reading or watching the fire.

Don't forget to take that floral arrangement off the top of the armoire - it looks too little and kind of dangerous up there!

I like the rug you have chosen. It is subtle but brings in a bit of color to the space, and looks like it works with the pillows and throw that you have already. Some more art on the walls, perhaps a larger, more colorful piece over the mantle, some larger tables and you are done. I would think about pulling the rusty red into the drapery color as well.

Les - Thanks so much. You always take so much time and thought into your posts. i really enjoy reading them. We had the room arranged similar to what you were saying previously. Basically the room was rotated counter clockwise. See floorplan below...

We felt like the room was cut in half with the love seat sticking out. also the TV wathcing was awkward from the long couch and too far from the loveseat. The problem we encounter is that the room is narrow and our furniture is kind of oversized. They are very deep couches. But they are only 2 years old and we can't replace them yet.

i forgot the floral arrangment was up there - I put it there to move somethng else and forgot to move it back.. lol..

And my Dh loves the poang chair but doesn't sit in it too often.. He moves it around when he wants to sit on it.

Hope this helps.. What do you think.. I thought the room seemed so closed in - I liked it for a while but after a year or so I was tired of it. I also felt like it wasn't good for watching TV. Although the couches like this form a better conversation area - it was so far from the TV and Dh found himself watching TV from his poang or the floor and not sitting on the couch..

Just wanted to comment on the rug...it's beautiful, and I want one too! I have the same colors in my LR, except my 25 yr old carpet is gold/brown tones. (as soon as I get some more DIY $$$, that's the first thing on my agenda!) I have been thinking about an area rug lately, and I think you just made up my mind! THX all!

I liked the modern block like pattern but yet the floraly leaf pattern makes it a little more traditional. I think its a nice mix.

I also liked it b/c the 8x10 is only $218. I didn't want to spend a ton and I wanted to look at it locally. it says they have it at my local store - we'll see tomorrow.

Thanks Lindy - I like the Gold but DH likes this color - its a lighter than I wanted. He kinda agrees with me but we didn;t paint it that long ago - so he wants to live with it for a while. its hard to really see the color on the pictures. There is some tone to it - its not too offwhite. I wanted the next shade down on the card and he was afraid of it being too dark - I like the gold you picked and I think I like the curtains in there as well. I may have to order those...I also like the picture over the couch -

bac717 - I used a furniture website room planner to create the floorplan. I found it very easy to use and it allows you to name and save multiple floorplans. The website alows you to print the floorplan as well as email - but in order to get a picture of it - I used a screen capture program (screenprint32 - search on downlaod.com)

the screen capture program can be set up to select the area of the screen you want copied and then you can either set it up to print it automatically or set it to save the file. I use the save file feature - then I upload to my online web storage and post here.

Your rug choice is pretty too; I didn't know Lowe's had such pretty and reasonable area rugs until recently. Can you share your curtain site?? I love those in the last picture you posted.

Snicky - allt he curtains above came from the JCP site. I love the last ones as well. I was considering the blue/choc ones for my bedroom.

I was suprised at the cost of the Lowes rug as well.

I am really not sure about moving the armoire back. I felt like the way I had it for a year - the loveseat cut the room in half and actually made it feel smaller. I agree that the arrangement was better for couch conversation but it was terrible for watchng TV. The loveseat was far from the TV and the couch was awkward you would have to sit sideways.

We haven;t committed to this arrangement - we wanted to live with it for a while and see if we like it.

Maybe it's because I have a little one in the house, so I'm super-sensitive to safety issues, but that tall armoire sitting there without a wall behind it to keep it from tipping over looks really scary to me.

If the current arrangement works for you for viewing and conversation, then I would suggest thinking about replacing the armoire with something lower. I'm all for hiding the tv, but in this arrangement, I think it would look better to be visible on a piece of furniture that works better in the room.

We will be upgrading to a flat screen and when we do this either we will get a lower TV console or it will go over the fireplace. Not sure which yet - we are looking for some deals.

I just found this rug on the JCP site. It is a set of 3 with the runner and small one for the back door for only 199. They have a ton of styles...

What do you think of this one for the room.
