OK What's wrong with this picture?!

I've been banging my head against the wall trying to decide on which 30" gas range I could possibly properly install in an existing 34" space between a low hanging cabinet and a wall (solid wood cabinets built on site ca. 1954), to the point that I've almost decided to move the range to a safer place, and now I see this:

That's just wrong. Color me confused.

It may have the minimally required three inches to the side to a combustible surface.

Richard, I'll bite! I haven't used a rototiller in 3 years. I haven't pulled a weed in 3 years. I use an Automated Watering System so I never need to use a hose, etc. freeing up hours of time per week. I have saved perhaps 50% on my water bill attributed to my gardening activities by not wasting any water from run-off. I am using less fertilizer per plant vs. in-ground planting. I am making better use of "vertical space" for growing meaning that I can grow more vegetables per square foot of horizontal space. I have less damage from varmints as it is tougher to scale the walls of my containers. I believe (although I cannot prove it) that the isolation of the potting mix cuts down on soil borne diseases. I can rotate the plant around 180 degrees at will to more symmetrically have the plant flower and produce more fruit. I can use new space like on a deck or on concrete for new growing opportunities. The only "downside" I have experienced to date is (1) Cost, container type SWCs are more expensive than in-ground planting, and (2). I am more prone to Powdery Leaf Mildew type airborne diseases due to the high density planting of the EarthTainer. Overall, not having to weed, water, etc. are well worth the trade-offs. Raybo

Well, I planted the Allium bulbs that bloom those large blue, ball type flowers on top and none of those spendy little guys came out of the ground very far, then died! I always follow directions on the packages, especially when they cost so much. What did I do wrong? (sorry don't recall the correct name) Here is a link that might be useful: Choosing gardening tools

It may be the Walmart potting mix. I started three flats of tomatoes from seed this year. I finished up a bag of soilless mix I had leftover from last year, and then for the third flat I opened a bag of stuff that I bought at Walmart this year. The first two flats took off like gangbusters. The third flat was slow, anemic, disappointing, and more than a bit puzzling. I started watering that third flat with fertilized water and things are starting to really happen, so my belief is that the stuff I got from Walmart didn't actually have the nutrients in it that they claimed. I set the bag at the curb on garage sale day and it disappeared, so I can't tell you the exact brand of it. My plants are in those little tiny seed-starting trays- probably 3 ounces of soilless mix. But the plants themselves are 2 feet tall, with many leaves. Adding fertilized water every day now. Looking forward to putting them in the ground this weekend. Gosh, I can't wait for some real, ripe tomatoes. I went to the farmer's market. They are selling tomatoes from Georgia. Nothing wrong with Georgia, but the farmers in Indiana aren't growing toms in Georgia. More picked-green, not truly ripe stuff. Might as well hit the supermarket! Not wandering as much this year.

It is one of the fungus diseases, most likely Alternaria. Treatment is the same for all the fungus diseases - strip off all the affected foliage and dispose of it away from the garden and begin a regular fungicide spraying program. Dave

How do you know its 3"?

I have no idea what range that is. Is it a sealed burner; an open burner: what are the btu's?. They all have different installation guides. I know I've read many of them. They range anywhere form 1" to walls above the countertop for the old fashioned open burners to 12" for the newer sealed burners. See Fisher and Paykal here:

The most common seems to be 5-6". Premier ranges for example all require 5" to combustibles less than 18" above the countertop, even if the range has 4 9k btu sealed burners, Yet Maytag and Whirlpool have many ranges with 2" clearances to combustibles; many of which have up to 15K sealed power burners. Kenmore also. Kenmore has a chart 9-15k 2" and it increases from there based on burner size.

To make matters even more confusing: Maytag guides say follow range hood instructions for clearance directly above the range; yet GE for a very basic 8 or 9k open burner model requires a minimum 24" above the cooktop if a range hood is installed. OK. I've found a few Broan range hoods that specify installation 18-24 in. above the cooktop for optimal performance. So which guide does one follow?

It's a KitchenAid ArchitectII freestanding range. You are right, one model says 4" another says 5", and it doesn't look like it has that much.

But it's not a real kitchen: the cabinets aren't connected at the corners and cabinets off to the right don't even have hardware. Its just a stage set to show its general appearance.

How strange that a vent company would stage it that way, tho! Or accept the presentation for their ad. Maybe it's a attention grabber meant to boost fire anxiety...
