Grouting tomorrow. Does brand matter?
Comments (3)I've used for the most part Laticrete, Mapei and Custom for years and years. All are fine. Biggest problems I see on this forum are installation errors. Using unsanded in too wide a joint which can lead to shrinkage cracks as the grout cures, that happens once in a while. Most common error involves water. Too much water is used in the initial mix in order to make the grout easy to spread. Then afterwards, too much water used during the clean-up of the joints. Most common symptom of that is blotchy or uneven grout color. I find most people don't mix grout long enough. When you mix it properly, it gets to that magical state where instead of troweling thick mud, you're troweling glass marbles. It just flows. Grouting should still be a workout of sorts, it does require effort to properly pack the joints, etc. In the end it's not really the brand that causes problems, it's the methodology of the installer....See MoreShower Drain? Do looks matter?
Comments (12)They're designed for their own rough-ins, I don't have enough experience with shower drains to know if the grate will fit what you have now, but it would be a simple matter to pull out the basic drain assembly you have and replace it with one of those in your link if necessary. I just bought a California Faucets faucet for a tub/shower and am really impresed with their stuff. As with the drains, you can choose from over 30 different finishes (including 24K gold!). I got one in a different color and a shiny rather than matte finish. Pictures don't describe how great this thing looks or feels - I love those numbers for the temperature in degrees F embossed right into the metal surrounding the lever, it's like a sundial. And yes, it really does vary the hot and cold water mix as needed to hold whatever temperature it's set at - no futzing with the knobs every time you take a shower to get the temperature right....See Morequality of undermount sink - does brand matter?
Comments (12)What a timely post. Your question is precisely what I was wondering. I'm buying a houseful of plumbing fixtures so I can get the Toto sinks, for what I think, is a reasonable price. The undermount Toto sinks don't actually say Toto on them, so no one but you will know that it's Toto. It's more for the quality but I'm not actually sure how it'll be. I'd also love to hear from Toto sink owners to find out if they've seen a difference in performance (i.e. easy/difficult to stain or clean, ease of chipping, uniformity of glaze/colour...). Unfortunatley, not many stores around me display undermount Toto sinks. The Toto website doesn't show me how the sink curves and the overall feel of it. Lucik77 have you seen any on display?...See MoreRecessed lighting....does brand matter?
Comments (7)Yes it matters. For a while there Commercial Elec. was faking a UL listing and got caught. I put in some of their GFCI outlets and then got burned with 10 service calls to come back and replace them (all of them failed within 6 months). I then saw the Commercial Elec. 6 packs of GFCIs on clearance at HD for $10 a pack. Electricians bought them all within a day (Lots of service calls there!) Also the cheap can light packs with the trims have lousy trim rings. A friend's company installed several dozen and got call backs when they turned an awful yellow color after a year. I quit playing the game and spend the whopping $6 for Juno or Halo can and $9 for the trim. They are sold in 6 packs (just trims and housings are separate....See Moreblondelle
