HELP!! New coat of paint paint scrapes & peels off

I am painting and glazing an old pine hutch.

I removed the stain finish with stripper, sanded all parts and painted with BM all-purpose primer.

I then painted hutch with 2 coats of BM paint. Now I have some areas that peel off while others are adhering.

Is there some kind of polyurethane finish coat I can apply to protect this finish?

I don't think applying poly on top is going to fix it. Sounds like the problem is coming from beneath the paint. Almost sounds to me like there might be some residue from the stripping product left...? Did you do a good rinse/wipe off with mineral spirits or water (depending on instructions) before sanding? I like to do another wipe after sanding as well. Sometimes that stuff clings in nooks and crannies. Best I can come up with because other than that is sounds like you did everything right. Did you let it dry well between primer and each top coat?

Yes, I did do mineral spirits wash and let dry about 2 days between primer and each coat. This really has me stumped!

I feel your pain. We used SW Paint in our bathroom and had the same problem; I was so mad because their paint isn't cheap and we used exactly what we were told to use. The bubbling was on the ceiling around the vent but all the walls had water stains from when moisture would drip and those wouldn't clean off at all; it looked horrible. We have an open window and vent that we use religiously, so ventilation was not the culprit. To fix it, we had to sand down the areas that were bubbling, wash the walls thoroughly with TSP and paint using BM Aura paint. That's what the guy at our local Benjamin Moore store recommended and yup, it was even more expensive then the Sherwin Williams was; it was worth it though because it worked. We followed the guys directions and let the paint cure for a week before using the shower. This did the trick, no more issues. The nice thing is that I didn't want a very glossy finish and the finish of this Aura paint is egg shell. It went on super easy and looks great! Oh and they were able to mix the SW Color I wanted as well which was a bonus!

Paint peeling off Bosch range knobs

Discovered the paint peeling off my Bosch range knobs last night. The knobs were sticky to the touch and so I wiped them off with a sponge and lo and behold I discover that the paint is coming off! My range was installed August 18 and I was away on vacation for 10 days....so it didn't take too long for the paint to melt off! I called the appliance store where I purchased the range and they readily agreed to send me another set of knobs. I guess I'll keep my new set of knobs in a special place and take them out for use on the holidays! I think I'll write a letter to Bosch too. I expect better engineering than this! Everything else has worked well with the range, though it does take longer to bring a big pot of water to the boil than it did with my old Jenn-Air electric coil burner....but oh I love that click click click sound when the gas goes on!

I would say you need to scrape and sand off as much as you can and then seal it with either bin or Kilz primer before trying again with a finish coat. I had wainscoting that was probably painted with oil based paint and then painted over with latex without priming by the PO and it peeled off gradually for over a period of years. I ended up scraping off anything that was loose and sealing it as above and repainting with latex. I hope you didn’t paint a lot of it.

From where I stand as general remodeling contractor in Los Angeles, the reasons for peeling paint can vary widely. Painting over dirty walls, excess moisture, improper prep, and using latex paint on top of oil paint can all affect the paint's adhesion and cause it to eventually begin flaking off. For you case, it looks like paint was applied over a oil paints, besides the walls being dirty with no proper preparation. Unfortunately, doing another coating on top of it will just no help. You'll just need to have the paint scraped off and do a fresh one. Simply, you'll need to remove the peeling areas and start over with fresh coats of primer and paint. Make sure all the layers (even the previously existing one) are scraped off. Also make sure that you choose the right paint that will fit you home's atmosphere in terms of moisturization.

Wow, that is a stumper then. I really have no other suggestions. Myself, I'd be leery of putting poly over it to hold it down, I'd be thinking the poly would lift up too, or crack and craze? Dunno. Had a similar experience recently. Freebie little lamp I got, perfect shape for a bedside but it was black and I wanted it cream. Did everything right and there was one tiny spot that the primer and paint just kept curling up and cracking off of and I just can not get it fixed.

Guess you could always try the poly, if you can get the topcoat to cling long enough to apply it?

I would probably have used an oil based primer or BIN or a bonding primer instead of a general purpose primer, especially if adhesion was any concern. Even the general purpose primer should have worked though. When your paint peels, is it peeling down to raw wood or just down to the primer? This is important because what you want to know is if the primer is failing or is it just the topcoat? It's true that adding a poly topcoat will not work to correct this because it could be the stress of any new layer that is causing the questionable layer to fail.
