Paint this stairs spindles white or not?
Comments (26)As an experienced spindle painter...here's my take on your last post :oP What's the worst thing you could end up with? Black paint you're not in love which, which could then be repainted gray or painted another color. Painting those larger pieces is SO MUCH Easier and less time consuming than the spindles! If you paint the spindles and still don't like the other pieces with the white you have to repaint the spindles which are freaking time consuming and fussy! Try the easy road first LOL...See MorePainting oak stair spindles.... Best filler? Primer?
Comments (2)Hey Bobsmyuncle I was hoping you'd come to the rescue. You gave me lots of info. to refinish a desk awhile back. I failed to complete it because I'm too chicken to use a harsh stripper. The top was the only part I got done. I'd love to take a hands on refinishing class but there's nothing like that around here. Anyhow, If I use a stripper to remove the existing finish do I need to take down the stairs? (I'm hoping you say no.) What about ventilation? Can I just open some windows and use fans? As for painting, I know my Dad took all of the stair pieces to his work and sprayed a clear coat. I don't know what it was but could find out. Just clean and 'scuff' not completely strip the protective clear coat? Thanks for the BIN suggestions. I'll use that if I ever get brave enough to try this. With the BIN after you sand, prime, is there a chance you would need to lightly sand and prime again or should one coat do it? I'm assuming there are directions on the stuff but was curious....See More70’s spindles on the stairs. Need help!
Comments (16)Suzyq, I too am concerned that the spindles are load bearing. Just upstairs along that wall I believe there is a bedroom(haven’t been to the house lately;we are moving there from out of state) We have thought about closing the stair wall back up and if it’s load bearing I worry that may be the only option aside from keeping the spindles, but it’s not my first choice as I like the light there as well. Closing up the wall would make a very dark staircase. Fori, the house is a colonial so it has that stairway in the center of the house divide. That wall the spindles are on forms one wall of a long hallway that runs nearly to the back of the house. I just googled laser cut screens and wow! I loved those! Never seen those before. They would definitely keep the light in and they look easy to install which would make my husband happy....See MoreRed oak stair and white oak floors
Comments (63)Beth H. : - thanks so much for sharing those last two images. I'm working on a staircase in an addition to our old house and I've been using Houzz images to help the staircase maker understand what I'm seeking and hadn't seen those. And I agree, Houzz has chronic "control issues" when it comes to sharing images easily from other sites. I really think the owners have ambitions to take over from Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, let alone all the also-rans, ugh. It's a sharing world, Houzz - get with the program! Anyway, about those images you've shared; are they from Houzz? I tried clicking on them to see if they'd open a post, to no avail. Thanks!...See Morepaintguy22
