Texturing plaster walls that have been wallpapered & painted over
Comments (16)I'm not sure if the OP is reading this anymore, but I did want to offer advice. I've been scraping (and scraping and scraping, you get the idea) wallpaper for so long. We're in the process of redoing my daughter's room and there were many many layers of wallpaper on the walls. I assumed the layers started in the 1930's, but on one wall, they put sheetrock over the plasterwall. It's some bizarre cardboard-like substance, so I guess in the 1950's- late 60's they just redecorated a lot. Anyway, long story shortened, when I got to the last layer on that cardbaord wall, it's stuck like glue over it. I got off all I could, scrubbed it, and my husband put a layer of plaster over the whole thing and it's now smooth as glass. I don't think this would work with many many layers, but my father in law has done this in the past, and after 20 years all is still good. I wouldn't recommend doing this in the more public areas of the home, but in the bedrooms it might work for you. It sounds like from your post that you are a thoughtful remodeler. I, like so many on this forum, cringe when thinking of "flippers" and the lack of care for history that many have. However, there are people who remodel who do a great job and do it not only to make money, but to improve their community. Those people are to be commended, because their vision helps create a longer history for that house in that community. I hope that you are able to bring that home to its former glory and find a family to love it....See Moreplaster over painted drywall?

We seal the tinted walls with a wax or tung oil depending on the color and sheen desired.Sealing prevents fingerprints and makes them washable. Comments (13)After considering the responses, I am leaning towards either a pure white or a solid antique white (no artificial darkening/shadowing in the crevices). The photo posted of the glazed kitchen is gorgeous, but I am too chicken I think given the cost of cabinets. Regarding the rest of the kitchen, most likely I will go with an oak hardwood floor (to match the rest of the house it will be stained a golden & pecan color), stainless steel appliances, and I would like to keep the main color scheme relatively neutral. Most likely a travertine looking backsplash and beige to medium brown paint colors. I already posted a link to the cabinet door so you can see the style which is traditional-transitional, full overlay. The ends of the cabinets will be done in beadboard, as will the sides of a small center island. I was planning to do beadboard/wainscotting all the way around the breakfast/eating area to continue with that idea. The house is a 1942 Spanish style in Southern California, one of those Hacienda looking style homes, although it is kind of transitional since 1942 is getting out of that era. The link below shows an antique white kitchen that has many elements of white mine would probably look like if I did antique white. http://www.kitchen-design-ideas.org/pictures-of-kitchens-traditional-antique-white-kit002.html#axzz1VUakya4D On the other hand, I think pure white cabinets could also work: http://www.kitchen-design-ideas.org/pictures-of-kitchens-traditional-white-kit004.html#axzz1VUakya4D My main concern is about how antique white vs pure white cabinets age/wear over time, which is why I was originally trying to stay away from talking about the rest of the kitchen. I worry the antique white will start to look dingy if they pick up dirt over time. I want a white kitchen in some way shape or form, I just want to pick the right shade of white that I will be happy with over time. Thanks for everyone's help. Can someone please tell me how to set up my profile to be notified when someone responds to my thread? I looked in the settings and I'm not seeing it. Comments (2)Gee, you'd think I would have thought of that...wait, I did think of that! ;) He had no idea. I've called two SW stores. One said they have an oil based poly I could put over it but it would slightly change the color of the paint and when asked if it would yellow over time, he said yes. Another SW store said I could use a Minwax LATEX sealer. Then someone interrupted him and there was a discussion on whether I could use latex since the SW Illusions glaze was oil based. The outcome of that discussion was "I'll have to check on that and call you back". I'll tomorrow if I haven't heard anything by closing today....See Morelazy_gardens
