Comments (8)Thanks everyone - that's what i thought. My kids are actually well behaved in the kitchen as well. I have 2 little girls and b/c we have a galley that opens up into a dining area, they mostly stay in there anyway b/c I'm always yelling "get out of my space!" when I'm cooking or cleaning. And b/c our cabinets are old and hard to open, they tend to stay away from these as well. I just wanted to comfort my hubby. I think he's still traumatized by my 4 year old cutting her thumb on an open can and needing stitches (oddly he's a doctor and yet literally almost passed out watching her thumb bleed and yes, we've since got a can opener that doesn't leave sharp edges!). Thanks!...See MoreDo I need a new garbage disposal?
Comments (16)I have had many disposals in the 45 years we have been married, and most of them were bottom of the line models that came with apartments or tract homes. I would assume you have a bottom of the line unit unless you know you have one of the maker's deluxe models. With the bottom of the line models, you have to be careful with what you put in them. Nothing stringy like celery, banana peels, broccoli peels, gristle. Nothing requiring strength like bones or corn cobs. A few years ago, we replaced ours with a kitchen remodel, and this time we have a mid or top of the line disposal. Now I can put more things in it to grind up, but I still stay away from bones. I remember when my aunt got her fancy one installed in the 1960s, the installer told her to drop a glass Coke bottle down it every now and then to sharpen it. I have certainly never done that either!...See MoreGarbage Disposal - will I regret not having one?
Comments (48)In planning our remodel, my plan was to eliminate the garbage disposal. We looked at an open house to get ideas for the kitchen and the realtor told us about the remodel in the kitchen in the house that was for sale. He said that there were two things that all of the prospective buyers complained about: 1) the pantry closet had been removed (every house here is built with one), and 2) there was no garbage disposal. Since we might not be here for the long term, we will keep our disposal. If you think you might put your house on the market in the near future, you might want to do what's common in your area....See Moredretutz
