nursing, weaning and trouble conceiving (long)

My daughter is 14 months old and is nursing. We are trying to get pregnant again, but are having trouble (no trouble conceiving DD) My OB thinks that it may be the continued nursing that is causing the problem and recommends weaning (apparently it is possible to have your period, but not ovulate). My plan prior to the problem conceiving was to let DD nurse until she weaned herself (thinking she would wean herself at about a year). Well I am not getting any younger, would like to have another child and our daughter isn't showing any signs of weaning. Has anyone else had a problem getting pregnant due to nursing? Will weaning her before she is ready cause any ill effects? Any information would be helpful.

My girlfriend got pregnant while nursing. Her daughter wasn't nursing as much (weaning on her own). I beleive her daughter was 15 months when she got pregnant so it is possible to nurse and get pregnant. I myself pumped my milk for my son who could not eat by mouth due to being born with no suck, gag, or swallow reflex so I don't know of any adverse affect on making her stop. Good luck!

I have had all my boys weaned at different times...
My second one was weaned from breast to bottle at about 11 months. He would accept either breast or bottle of formula and not have a preference...Other than he could walk around with the bottle. :o)
Your daughter will NOT suffer any ill affects if you chose to wean her now...
Also too, with all mine, I was "fertile" again around 16 months, not any sooner that I knew of...my last one has just weaned at 19 months. ( He never would take a bottle or pacifier.)

Eventually your fertility will return wether or not you are breastfeeding...I'd say if it hasn't yet, it will in the next few months...

I was on Lexapro for about 3 years. It helped w/ anxiety & sleep problems, however I wanted to discontinue because I didn't cry anymore, felt I was having some brain-failure moments (I made some mistakes at work), brain zap feelings & my husband and I both agreed I was a little too unconcerned about things. Anyhow, the shrink who prescribed said any withdrawal symptoms were 'in my head'. I tried weaning myself and was so nervous, I finally made an appt w/ a psychologist so they could sort of hold my hand thru the w/drawal. She was great. She saw me as needed and said she had heard about this many times. My withdrawal was tapered & slow. I negotiated 3 weeks off using sick time w/ company nurse, however never used it. I recall my bothersome symptoms include involuntary leg movements as I was trying to go to sleep and headaches. For about 2 months, I had some crying episodes at work. I would cry for little reason. Finally had to explain to coworker who sat next to me--- I wanted her to know I hadn't come unglued, it was the meds. Don't remember much else - it's been a few years, but it was definitely a big deal for me.

You are just teasing us!! ;o) If you don't stop, I'm gonna post another picture of my cute kid begging me for a puppy. Georgia is just too far from Utah for a weekend road trip, though. If/when we do get a dog, it will likely be from the shelter like our cats. We had a lost dog in our garage last night, but only for a short time as he had tags w/phone number. Owner came very soon. He was high energy! He destroyed a beach ball in our garage, and had a lot of fun doing it too! He must keep his family on their toes. I don't know why I find all the lost dogs. Do you think someone's trying to tell me something?

Wow, I was on the edge of my seat, reading your story, Marilyn!!! When you have some spare time, (yes, ha ha!!) you really should write your stories down--I think we discussed this one time. Such a book would indeed sell well as most of us humans have a soft spot for animals, especially down-and-out rescue animals. It's hard to believe that little cutie-pie survived and shows how strong he is. I hope you know there isn't one person who would think you tell these stories to make yourself look good because you're not that kind of a person at all, and it shows. Thank you for entertaining us and taking such marvelous care of all of God's creatures! I hope you will be able to give us updates. Oh, my, and I hope your dh continues to do well. I was so fascinated with the kitten story that I almost forgot to comment on your poor hubby! I hope he's up and at 'em soon--though not too soon--and back to working the job he most enjoys.

outright fighting is not the only way they show hostility Funny you should say that, Breenthumb. I came downstairs this morning and discovered that one of the cats had peed on top of an antique table during the night. I have a tendency to blame Annie, but this time she was locked up, and so was Rocky. Pogo and Annie were so skittish this morning. Pogo usually spends some time in my bedroom after I get up, but he didn't stay this time. Peachy was afraid to come downstairs. They were nervous, and I was nervous. I played with Rocky a lot before Pogo and Peachy joined us downstairs, hoping to discharge some of his energy. He has an abundance of it. Then a few minutes ago Peachy (much smaller than Rocky) hissed at him, and he took a step toward her. That was all it took to make me want to put an end to this situation, at least for now. So I put Rocky outside. I know he'll want to come in. I have loved seeing him enjoying the comforts of home. But we'll try this for awhile, and continue to give the situation some thought. At least in the warm weather Rocky will have lots of human companionship outdoors, as we're a family of gardeners. I cancelled the vet appointment. Annie has never been easy to handle, and when I showed up she hid under the bed. The last thing I want is to risk another cat bite. I changed the dressing this morning, and my hand and wrist are swollen, red, and hot. I hope the Augmentin takes care of the infection. My thanks again to all.

It is DEFINITELY possible to get pregnant while nursing. A friend of mine had twins and was successfully breastfeeding them. She recovered from the labor and delivery very quickly, and she and her hubby resumed "relations" just 2 weeks later. At 10 weeks postpartum, she found out she was pregnant again! (That pregnancy turned out to be ectopic, and she had to have surgery)

It IS possible to get pg while bf (I've known three people who did!) but biologically your chances of ovulating are greater if you are not... 14 months is not too early to wean your daughter -- try making a slow transition so that you just nurse her less and less frequently (and be sure to make up for the lost cuddle time!) Good luck!
