gluten intollerance in toddlers???

I have been reading some info online about cows milk hendering toddlers and infants in speech. Has anyone heard anything about this?? My 19 month old doesnt speak ( i had an ealier posting regarding this "18 month old not talking or walking alone") She drinks milk like it is doing out of style! She is always coughing or sneezing or has a runny nose and has had ear infections almost once a month since she was born. I would like to know if anyone has taken cows milk out of their infants diet and has seen improvements in their development. ALso, what would they then drink? Soy milk? Thanks! Cat

She could be allergic to cows milk in which case you would feed her soy milk or a soy based formula...think it's infamil soy.
But she could also be allergic to dust or mold in your house or just be catching stuff from other kids in day care or where ever she goes. Babies who are around older kids catch a lot of stuff.
Also gluten is a substance found in bread and cereals not in milk? Does she get cereal? baybe switch to all rice cereal and see if it helps.
But I don';t believe either would hinder her speech, unless she has such clogged ears she can't hear.
What does your Dr. say?

Besides the obvious of talking to your doctor, why don't you just cut out all dairy for 2 weeks? It can't hurt, it can only help! She'll be just fine with water and juice. I say give it a shot! Good luck :) Christy

Oh, and I agree with Linda, gluten is in bread and such.

We had to put in a new driveway a few years ago and we had the guy just scrape the top off the whole front yard while he was at it. I did use roundup in the back but the grass there was scraggly and it was pretty easy. I do not condone the use of herbicides for the most part either. We did the back in late August and got it all in one application (no dogs, cats or kids here) during a non rainy period so it wouldn't wash down. I wouldn't have tried it in front yard where it was thick and drains off into a stream in the park down the block. Partly my beds just kept getting bigger and bigger so the lawn size had really shrunk anyway. The stuff is a chore to dig out, I always did it in rows and tediously shook it out with each shovelful. The only time I like bermuda is when its dormant in winter and light cream colored. I like it OK in dry summers when left to go dormant too. My understanding is that this characteristic was what made it popular way back when before the day of sprinkler systems and constant watering people do now. Otherwise, I consider it one of the ugliest worst, most offensive weeds in America. I am constantly on it to keep it from invading my yard from the west and east lawns. There are some new no mow lawn seed mixes available online. They are supposed to perform very well and are low water users, better than buffalo grass but still, you have to get rid of the bermuda first. Just joking here but crabgrass is a good way to choke it out. Weed vs Weed.

Here is my favorite recipe for peanut butter cookies..... ~2 cups peanut butter ~2 cups sugar ~2 eggs ~1 teaspoon vanilla ~Preheat oven to 350. Grease cookie sheets. ~Beat peanut butter and sugar in bowl until fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla ~Roll dough into 1" balls and place 2" apart on cookie sheet. With tines of fork, press crosshatches to flatten. ~Bake 10-12 minutes. Cool on rack. For this recipe, I've found that natural peanut butters (the kind you have to stir together) do not work well. I also like to vary it by adding different kinds of chips. Chocolate, peanut butter and white chocolate are all good. I also don't usually bother to flatten them with a fork and they still come out fine.

I can answer the BS oven door question. My 36" BS RCS was installed two days ago (haven't used it yet, hopefully this weekend). During the burn off of the oven (high temp is 450 F for an hour) I checked how hot the oven door got, as that has been a big issue noted on these boards. On my range, the SS part of the oven door did not get hot, just a bit warm. The glass on the oven door got hotter but not that hot. What did get quite hot were the sides/edges of the oven door. I could touch the side but not for long. Definitely quite hot. Not instant burn/scald though. There are vents (or look like vents) right there so it makes sense that those areas heat up a lot. Your kids would have to press their hands up against the 2" side of the door for several seconds for it to affect them negatively. More likely a kid running around will touch the front of the door and that is not a problem, on my range at least.

Thanks, Islay! I think I will try the Cake Provençal, but I have to buy some canned tuna, as I do not keep that on hand. Since you use a silicon pan, I think Pyrex would be fine. I was considering an 8x8" pan because I thought it might make more cubes, but I will make that determination when I see how much batter I end up with. I found another recipe for it here, but it uses ham, and I would rather use tuna. I think ham would make it crumbly. Here is another similar recipe that looks interesting. I made the Roquefort mini-popovers yesterday, and I determined that they will not be that good cold. They were fine when hot or warm but are a bit too eggy to eat cold - the texture would be off. I also learned that you absolutely must use a non-stick mini-muffin pan. I have an old one that I used, and I had bought a new one (which is non-stick) because the recipe calls for two pans of 12. I almost bought two new pans, which is what I should have done, as I will now be recycling my old pan, since the popovers got completely stuck in the old pan, even though it was properly oiled. I had to scoop the popovers out with a spoon from the old pan, but they fell right out of the new pan. I took pictures, but they are not pretty. It is very easy to eat six of these popovers, and we had twelve each last night, more or less as a main course. They are a bit like cheesy eggy waffles - more like a breakfast food, but still good as an appetizer. I would make them for a party at home but not to take out. I might also still make hush puppies, as they are like cornbread and will be okay cold.

Eliminating milk and gluten are good things to try -- it made a HUGE difference for my son, clearing up his chronic congestion and ear infections within two weeks. He was also a milk and gluten junkie.

I'm curious that you mention gluten though. Did you hear about this diet from parents of a child with autism or PDD? The gluten free-casein free (GFCF) diet is a protocol often recommended for children suspected of having autism. NOT to suggest that your daughter is autistic -- merely being late to talk and walk are not enough to suggest such a serious diagnosis. However, if there are other areas where her development isn't typical, (unusual sensitivities or lack of sensitivity to touch, sound, light, temperature; lack of pointing; unusual interests) you may want to ask your pediatrician to screen her for early signs.
