cabinet doors hitting side of cabinet

Our cabinets are just going in. SEeing an issue I am wondering about. We have a 24" deep pantry and next to it a 12" upper with a door that swings towards the pantry. The door is going to be hitting the side of the pantry. Is there something we can put on the door or the edge of the pantry to keep the door from getting scratched up - something clear and not noticeable?

How about the clear bumpers that go on picture frames so they don't move around? They're about 1/2" and adhesive.

I had the same issue in my old kitchen. I don't think I did anything except try to be careful. Well, not that careful as I hated my old cabs.

Can the hinges of the regular upper be adjusted at all? I have those clear, little round tab thingies used as bumpers and furniture protectors. You know, the ones you put under small items so they don't scratch whatever they're sitting on. You could put one or more on your pantry door. It wouldn't exactly be invisible though.

Are you doing a knob or pull of any sort on the upper? That will hit the pantry before the actual door would.

Okay, maybe I'm the odd one, but this won't be the first limb I've climbed out on. After reading this thread I had to go open and close all my new cabinets just to see if this was happening in my kitchen. Low and behold there are 2 spots where doors can possibly hit something, but I'd only previously noticed ONE of them. Here's my idea: Knobs (or handles) will make this LESS of a problem. My old cabinets were w/o hardware and had frames (like ajsmomma's photo). One simply grabbed the edge and pulled. There was nothing to hang on to and the door was "flung" open. Consequently it sometimes went as far as it could. Now I grab a knob and HOLD ON TO IT. Often one tends to open the door with one hand, keeping that hand on the knob, reach in with the other hand, retrieve the desired object, then close the door (without letting go). In order to bang the door into the next cabinet I would have to bang my hand (which is covering the knob). Not likely to happen! Knobs might even help with those cabinets next to the hood. Although switching the doors is a good idea too. Maybe try using the knobs first?

@dcward89 has good idea and reminds me of what I did. I am not sure what the issues are with your cabinets, as I have never lived with that style of cabinet. But I used the clear bumpers that peel and stick, everywhere in my kitchen that a cabinet could bump against, or a knob could knock. So I have bumpers on my doorways, where upper and lower cabinet could open, and wack. There are bumpers on neighboring doors, where a knob could hit if I open the door too hard and it swings over. My doors are inset with hinges. There is no soft close hinges. They open 180 degrees if there wasn't an obstruction in the way, so a bumper goes there.

Thanks again for all these helpful tips and suggestions. Sophie and salex: Regarding adjusting the hinges in all dimensions, I have already tried adjusting all the screws (that is why the cabinet door in the right is a little higher than the one on the left) and it just seemed to make everything worse. But I can try again. Do you have suggestions for how to go about doing this? Should I adjust them all to one extreme or the other and then start tweaking various dimensions? you noticed that the doors are not parallel at the top but what you can’t see is that due to my adjustments the doors on the double cabinet are “out” or forward of all the other doors in the bank. I did have a “cabinet handyman” come out and try the same and he was unable to align them so that they could close. He got good reviews on Angie’s List but maybe he just didn’t know what he was doing? I’d gladly pay someone with experience and expertise to come and do it for me - my own experience was that each adjustment made the overlap even worse than before, so I stopped.

I just bought a house and the cabinets are right up against the wall. The molding prevents the door from opening more than 60 degrees. Any good ideas on alternatives for this area? I could flip the door to the other side but I think it would be awkward since it’s next to the fridge.

I just went and looked at ours since it's the same arrangement. The door can indeed hit the pantry side, and in 13 years I have never noticed it. I guess I am usually still holding the handle while I get something out, so it never whacked against it. In any case, our door and the cabinet side are not marred at all -- but then they are clad in melamine. Now you have me thinking of what to do when I replace them with painted doors... hmm...

Perhaps you could use a small chain to attach the door to the cabinet box (near the top) to keep it from swinging more than 90 degrees.

In our case, the door would hit our hood, so our GC installed iittle cables in the cabinet so the doors could only open so far. This has worked out well.

Do you have Blum hinges? If so you can get a clip to limit the opening to 85deg so they won't hit a cabinet/wall right along side. Rockler has them for 1.99 for a set of two.

They have good reviews, I just bought some to install on DH's cabinet above his toilet.

Clear bumpers and/or they can make a wire stop for the door that attaches inside the cabinet and runs to the inside of the door near the hinge that limits how far the door can open. We have 8 of these in various locations.

We had several areas in our kitchen with this issue. We installed the limiting clips described by macybaby. So far they work great.

Thanks everyone - I am going to try the clips. I wouldn't worry if I didn't have kids...but I am sure they won't be careful.

I bought those clips you suggested, but there are no directions and I guess they are smarter than I am because I can't figure out how to install them...they are tiny.
