Formula Question

I think this is a dumb question, but need to know...How do you pick a baby formula? Carrie EDD 3/14/02

i would pick carnation because they have those comfort proteins and it breaks down in the baby's stomach more gently than regular ones. but you can pick anyone you want.
you may have to switch a few times to get the right one that your dd likes and is best suited for her little stomach:)

My pediatrition only suggests Similac. It consistently scores the highest when compared with other brands, and most recently was shown to have up to 50% more absortion of calcium than other brands (which well help prevent osteperosis later in life. It is also the brand that government gives out with the WIC program (Women with infant children) because of its high quality. Others might be cheaper but similac I feel is the best. IF you join the Welcome Addition club on similac's web page they will send you free samples and also give you coupons every month for money off.

Thank you both so much! Greenman28: Now you mention "Gritty mix or 5-1-1"...what are those? Are they a description for mixes you (or I) would have to mix ourselves by buying the ingredients separately? Or is that something pre-bagged i can buy? Gardengal48: THANK YOU! If it was me searching/buying the ingredients I would have no issue at all buying them and mixing my own mix, but because in my current circumstance i am relying on a family member to buy the mix for me, it is fantastic to hear about a bagged mix! Because remember i am not only needing to re-pot my trees into 1gal pots, but i am going to be growing JM from seed and so i'll need soil for that as well, so if i can use that for seeds as well that is fantastic. (I thought manure wasn't recommended for JPN MPL's? I read the specs for the Acid Planting Mix and it says it has: chicken manure, and bat guano) Just called Sky-Nursery, they said they used to use Gardener & Bloome but found it too rich so they now carry and use EB-Stone mixes and for my use they recommended: http://www.ebstone.org/13_azalea.php Any thoughts? Those who know Sans varieties more intimately might be able to help you ID it more specifically. It could definitely be a new pup of a tall type. Just wanted you to have that in your mind since you seemed unsure of the exact ID, and so you can start loving it "that way" if it proves to be a short type. Since the pot is not full, it's likely a younger pup of whatever type it is. You also seem to have the bug, appreciation for variation in Sans leaves, a pretty serious illness, also why I mentioned that some Sans stay short. You can't want more plants if you don't know about them. Everyone appreciates that, right? I'm sure not all Sans do so, but the most common types seem to fill the pot before they make really tall leaves. Not that it's a cause/effect, just that it takes only about a year (unless really unhappy) for a Sans to fill the sparse few inches of spare surface area they are usually given, but several years are needed for the tall types to make those really tall leaves. One's results would depend on if the material used to start the new pot was a young new pup, or a separated rosette with much more age.

yes, formulas for quarts are adjusted to the amount of colorants added. Depends on the base and the color to reduce the ratios down. On some quarts some of the colorants aren't even added they are so small (more like a hanging chad) Some quarts won't even reduce down.

However, I love the color he made, which is now not a Sherwin Williams color. How do I convert the colorant numbers which are done as 384th OZ to Sherwin Williams 32 64 128. I don't think you have to. You have the color. Paint a sample board. Nice, neat sample. Two full coats. Let the first coat dry before you apply the second. You should be able to take that sample anywhere and have the colorist match it - they may scan/measure it, they may do it by eye, may be a combo of both. Again, while I know the formulas, I don't do anything with them. The chemistry and the math make my head spin. But I suspect the math isn't the only obstacle here. Even if you figure out the math, you're trying to convert Behr colorants into Sherwin-Williams colorants. And the colorants are not the same. In other words, even if you do figure out the math, the math doesn't apply to Sherwin-Williams colorants the same as it does to the Behr product - bases and colorants. Apples and oranges.

My Dr said Similac and Enfamil were by far superior to Carnation Good start and the generic brands. Ask your dr for a recommendation. After he/she gives you a recommendation ask her/him why she prefers that brand. My DD could not take the Good Start - made her terribly gassy!

As a long time professional in the field of children, I also recommend Similac, and it's forms. This is the all around most commonly accepted-by babies in all my work over the years! Most recommended by peds, for it's greater calcium absorbstion..Even my own son took to Similac w/out complication,gas or fussiness.

Similac is quite reasonably priced at Walmart! COstco also sells a larger size container for a great price!

I would also suggest joining the welcome addition club to receive a free formula starter kit and monthly coupons!

*Remember everybaby is different, you'll have to start w/one formula and work from there..be consistent, don't switch back and forth between formula's..and don't change formula's w/out doc's consent! Give baby time to adjust to any given formula. Gas or fussiness may not always mean a formula change, it could be as simple as changing the type of bottle or even nipple!!

I chose to suppliment my b/f with Similac.

My Dr. said they were all basically the same and wouldn't make any recommendations, then my parents made a passing comment on how I was a Similac baby -- I've always been very healthy, so I considered that more than enough reason to choose it for my daughter! :)

My neighbor uses Emfamil and has been very happy.

My doctor told me that Nestle Good Start was one of the best, so this is what I use. My little guy seems to like it and they give you free samples, and a magazine and other little things if you go to their website.

Find what works best for you, I know there are a lot of choices! And isn't it expensive??? YIKES!
