DS won't wear a hat

I have been putting a hat on DS pretty much from the time he was born. Even over the summer I would put a baseball hat on him before we went out. Now, he's seven months old and has decided he's not going to wear a hat anymore. As soon as I put it on his head, he takes it back off. If I try to distract him, it'll work for a minute or two, but then he remembers the hat is on his head and pulls it off. It's gotten so bad that when I try to put the hat on his head he puts his hands up so I can't!!! Any suggestions? I'm having battle of the wills with a seven month old.

I think it's about time to give up and let him win this one! lol, I've NEVER been able to keep a hat on Timberly, which is a shame 'cause she has a TON of CUTE ones! :)

I think you mean a winter hat b/c it's so cold, right? What I've done with my 7 mo old is put her in a poncho (it's usually at least 40 deg. here and short walk to car) where her arms are under the cloth and then stick the hat on. No arms to remove it!! And I've found that when it's really cold and she's in her snow suit, she keeps the hat on. 1 day she kept taking it off though, so I washed it in case it was itchy.

Sounds like maybe the darker color thing mentioned above may also play into it. My 2001 Grand Cherokee ( factory am/fm/cd/casette player) will not recognize burned CDs. i am currently using my laptop with XP and have tried windows player, I-tunes and BurnerXP but haven't noticed any different results from any of that different software. After going thru about 30 cds burning at different speeds and formats, I finally got it to occasionally recognize one I burnt at around 4X using PCM .wav (uncompressed) format but to recognize and play I usually have to fast forward it thru a couple of songs while it is doing the initial read. Once it recognizes and starts playing then will usually play the whole CD but doesn't always work for whatever reason. I may try the label thing or try to find some of the "dark" cds to see if that matters. We have a 98 KIA witn an aftermarket cd player and it will play just about anything burnt to cd no matter format or speed.

I have to fess up to some of mine, since I (ahem) seem to tend to blame my husband for too much clutter! -A hand painted oversize tshirt. It was made by an artistic young neighbor who befriended us when we first moved to our house 17 years ago. Tragically, she died very young a year or so after we met her. I have not worn this shirt in ages, nor will I ever wear it again just because it isn't my style anymore. And yet I feel this vague guilt about getting rid of it. -A nightie/robe negligee set. I bought it long, long ago with the idea that every couple should have some sexy lingerie. Well. I wore it once (and as my husband would say, for only 30 seconds ;) and haven't put it on again. But when I made my first pass through the closet the other day I hesitated. Why? Do I suddenly think that now that we've been married even longer I need it even more?! -A battered paperback copy of Ann Lindbergh's Gift from the Sea. I don't even know where I got it, and this Christmas I gifted myself with the new and very lovely 50th anniversary edition. And yet I feel like I shouldn't get rid of the old copy. Why???? -A quilted ring box my MIL gave me when my daughter was born, as a very nice gesture ('mom should get something, not just the baby'). I wear almost no jewelry, and the only rings I own are my engagement and wedding bands-which live on my finger and don't come off. And yet, I feel like it would be wrong somehow to get rid of this box I've faithfully lifted and dusted around for 14 years-but never used once for its purpose. Those are just a few of the zillions of this kind of item I have around. Why oh why do I let myself have this false sentiment about *things*?! I call it false sentiment because I quite literally never use, enjoy or even look routinely at all these objects. They just take up space in my home. They clutter my view. But there is some kind of weird emotional hesitation about discarding them because of past gestures, thoughts or events that keeps me from doing what I know I should-toss!! Ann

As far as I can tell, the vast majority of "robber sues homeowner and wins" stories seem to be urban myths. I did study one case in law school where a homeowner was successfully sued, but in that case, he had set up a gun on some sort of automatic trigger connected to the front door of an unoccupied cabin. The court said that this was going too far, taking the chance of killing someone to protect property, rather than life. The basic rule on self-defense is that you have to try to run away rather than use force, if you can do it safely. That basic rule does *not* hold true in your own home. There is no "duty to retreat" in your own home. The other basic rule on self-defense is that you can use only enough force to repel the attack. However, what amount of force is reasonable depends on your duty to retreat. Since you have no duty to retreat inside your home, you can use more force than you would outside your home. As to whether you can use wasp spray as a weapon, I don't know the answer. My best guess would be that if you used it during an attack on the street, the courts would treat it as any other dangerous weapon. If you used it in your home (or car, at least in some states), even if you planned to use it as a weapon, I doubt there would be an issue. The law varies by state. If you want to see what your state thinks about these matters, look up the "castle doctrine," as in "my home is my castle." As a practical matter, I think most people are okay using whatever force they need to protect themselves inside their own homes. And that's even more so for women. Where I could see it getting dicey is if some teenaged kid broke into a house for drug money, having no weapon and thinking the house was unoccupied, tried to run away when he saw someone was home, and the man of the house grabbed him and beat the living s*^t out of the kid. Even then, I'll bet most police officers would tell the kid that he shouldn't have been in the house in the first place. As to whether the man of the house could then be sued, well, of course he could. Some of the castle laws protect people from being sued in these situations, but for the most part, anyone can sue anyone. Can't necessarily win, but can start the suit.

I just had time to read the first few responses so I apologize if I repeat what's already been said... or if I missed something new. I'm sure your son, along with the rest of the team(s) notice the 'girls' hanging out. Besides being awkward to ask him, he would probably say he's embarrassed to you but to his friends, he may be their hero... bringing something to look at to the games. (lots of kids that age are plain curious & will look at whatever is there) It's kinda sad that she feels so insecure and threatened to behave that way. (I know that she may not be insecure or feel threatened but everything she does would lead me to believe she is either insecure & feels threatened or she has absolutely no social skills or idea of what is appropriate) I also agree it could be worse but there's nothing wrong with feeling annoyed by her. She seems to be in your face, marking her territory, and maybe wants you to know she exists. Getting there before you might make her feel she has the upper hand... more like you are on HER turf because she was there first... you are walking into a space she has already gotten comfortable in. I disagree that she must care about SS to drive all that way to be there... she may be driving all that way to get in your face so you know she's there, especially if it's her only opportunity for you to see her. (I kinda see that because SD's BM goes to every practice & game for her BF's kids... even if she is on crutches or sick. She wants BF's exW to see her there, she also gets there before exW & seats herself with all the other mothers & starts up conversation so when exW gets there, she will sit somewhere else... it's not about rooting for the kids at all~ BM also is loud & in your face kinda person... and tries to be the sexy SM, so I relate to that part of your post) As your title says "probably won't do anything"... that's exactly what you should do... NOTHING. The more you ignore her and be yourself, it will probably drive her crazy. Whatever she is trying to get out of it... if she gets nothing back, it will frustrate her. As for talking to ex about smoking, I would simply mention that SS smells like smoke, the next time he smells like smoke... and instead of saying please don't smoke, say something like "I wonder why DS smells like smoke?" and see if he cops to it & offers to refrain around the child or shrugs an "I don't know". Then I would tell him that "I'd sure hate to see DS become a smoker, it's a nasty habit" I think that will work better than being an exW that comes across telling him what he can or can't do. I think you should have a right to when it comes to your son's well being but it does no good to complain if it's not going to be well received. If you get a dialogue going about concern for your son, then he might get the message. (what kind of parent would say "oh, it's no big deal if he decides to be a smoker"? That would be ridiculous and inappropriate.)

If you want a winter hat for him, get one that straps below his chin, so he can't get it off. That is what we have for our 14 mo. DD. It is Baby Gap fleece hat that has like these cute little joker points with fringe, and then it comes down over her ears and the straps velcro under her chin. It is very strong velcro so it stays on even with her pulling.

The fleece ones are great. You can get them at Target and Wal-Mart, too for cheaper than the Gap ones and they have the same styles pretty much.

We told DS he had to leave it on and used the velcro and fought with him. It's different if you're talking about wearing a hat just because it's cute and if it's because it's cold out. Your son is just in one of those stages and some grow out of it quicker than others. We just didn't let DS win that battle and the same with a coat. He's now almost 3 and he has to have a coat and hat on before he'll go out in the winter. He will get them himself if he knows we're about to leave. Last weekend it was in the 60's here and we tried to tell him he didn't need his hat and he was mad. We also put on a little lighter coat and he wanted his winter coat. If you give up now, you'll be losing the battle for a long time.

Timberly's winter hat matches my (man, what is it called, not ear muffs, but like a headband that covers your ears!! ARGH, I need my brain back!) thing*! I had NO problem with her keeping that one on as long as she was bundled up (she couldn't even get her arms up to her head in her winter coat!). If I try to put it on to take her into daycare, though (like if she's in a jacket, or it's warm enough for just a sweatshirt, but she needs a hat) it's impossible to keep it on her...she has one that straps below the chin but HATES it, she's figured out how to undo the tie (it's not velcro, she pulls on the bow until it comes undone!)...As for summer hats, whatever, I guess I'll have to get her used to those this summer...Wish me luck! :)

Johnny has the little beanies, 3 of them! He's 6 mos and will NOT wear it, he pulls it off as soon as I put it on him. We live in SoCal, so it's not freezing snowing weather, but it's been in the 40's this week. I've tried everything, I just gave up, I think it feels scratchy to him I don't know. I just put the blanket around his head and he's fine.

If a baby doesn't want a hat on no matter what type there is no way he's going to leave it on. Oh well, so he won't wear a hat. He won't die b/c of it. Try to see if you can at least sneak a hood or a blanket to cover him up when you're out of the car. If you're just in & out of the car & aren't req'd to be outside for long periods of time, it's no big deal.

Thanks everyone. I tried the velcro hat and it does work a little better. I do want to get him to tolerate hats. Even in the summer, I like him to wear a baseball cap. It keeps the sun out of his eyes. I try not to make a huge deal out of it, so it doesn't become a point of stress for him, but I do still push the issue. If he's really fighting me (which is always now) I just let it drop.

Michie1 - you're absolutely right. The only hat he can't take off right now is the velcro one and it's just a matter of time until he figures that out. Hopefully he'll get used to hats soon.
