Nicotine Lives Here! Best Interior Paint Finish

I am planning on having the kitchen painted and will probably use BM. So far, the cabinets are done in Aura Satin and they wipe down beautifully but everyone seems to advise the eggshell finish for the walls. Personally, with the experience of nicotine needing to be cleaned from the walls frequently, I cannot picture an eggshell working for me. Any advice for walls and ceiling?

Many people may argue with me, but in THIS case...
I'd stay with a Satin for walls as well!!!

For frequent washings, Satin does better than Eggshell.

Knowing what I know NOW...I couldn't in good faith recommend Eggshell here. It just won't do as well in the long-run.

Make SURE those walls are CLEANED AND RINSED.....WELL.

Eggshell finishing is only a slight hint of shine or gloss, it's good for walls and holds up better with cleaning than a flat finish paint. The flat finish or wall paint is also use for your kitchen wall. This type paint finish is usually used on interior walls. It's especially good if you have to cracks, or other imperfections, as this finish does not reflect light. Some of flat paints are washable today.

I've been looking and looking, and what I think may be ridiculous based on the amount of natural light your kitchen gets and in which direction its window is facing. (for example, ours is true north facing and gets no direct sun -- it casts a v. "cold," grey feeling on everything in there) However, with that big fat caveat out of the way: I now think painting the living and dining rooms the Herbal Green, the arch (all of it, both sides) the Hazelnut and the kitchen the Blue Spruce could be great. And this is why: the Herbal Green is soothing and subtle but still has a presence. I also think it will frame your gorgeous windows and views and totally set-off your fireplace. The Hazelnut I like because I just really like it! It is so warm, such a happy (but not in-your-face happy, if you know what I mean) color and its tone totally makes sense with the Herbal Green (neither are jarring, both appear to have similar dusky undercurrents), plus I think it'll subtly highlight your new arch. The Blue Spruce I like because, again, I think it "makes sense" with the Herbal Green and the Hazelnut (because of its tone) and it helps set the kitchen apart somewhat -- somewhat, because you don't want anything too crazy when all the spaces are open to one another. I don't think you'll actually have lots of room for the Blue Spruce, right? Because it's a darker, bolder color I think that can work to your benefit in the kitchen: it will highlight the blue-ish feeling in your basalt slate countertop and echo the earthy feeling of your cork and hardwood floors, all without overpowering / darkening the space. At least, in my mind's eye of your house that's what I'm seeing. My youngest is now up so off I go! Take care of yourself, -Brooke

I'm with you on Baldwin and if we're going down the dead road then I'd have to add in Angelo Donghia. I still have clips of rooms he did in the 70s that look great. There's a woman here in NY that lives in an apartment Billy Baldwin did for her, beige and French mixed with Lucite and quite wonderful. She never changed a thing. The Draper show was terrific. She had such a great sense of drama and color. There was a video of her as part of the show that was a great camp moments. It was done for a TV show in the '50s and she's a big lady wearing one of those floral dresses with a huge full skirt that rustles, like my Nana wore. Mamie Eisenhower hair and bracelets that rattle. We were doubled over laughing. She had a voice that made Julia Child seem shy. It was a hoot. One of her black dressers went for $200 at an auction not long ago. Someone got a big bargain.

Which interior wall paint brand has the flattest flat finish?

Can anyone tell me which paint will be absolutely flat. There is no paint industry standard for gloss or sheen. It's the subjective names that brands give to their different finishes that cause the confusion. For example... WTH is "pearl". WTF is "delicate". And so on. Generally speaking, however, paint brands follow the same-ish process to ascertain gloss levels of their paints. Remember, however, we cannot confirm that all the data was obtained exactly same way brand to brand so the comparisons you make are at best an ESTIMATED GUIDELINE of gloss levels. But, hey, a guideline is better than nothing. So, here goes: First thing you need to know is gloss is measured in units. It's called Gloss Units and you'll see it referenced as GU. Gloss units, GU, run on a scale of 0 GU to 100 GU. 0 is dead flat, 100 is ridiculous-mirror-like shiny. Find the GU for the brand/grade of paint you want to use on the paint can label or Google the Technical Data Sheet (TDS). Here's one for PPG's Manor Hall Flat . Here's what it says about Manor Hall Flat - SHEEN: Flat: 0 to 5 (60º and 85º Gloss Meter). The 0 to 5 is the Gloss Units (GU) and it goes on to tell you that measurements for those GU's were done at 60º and 85º. Measurements are done at a 60° angle, an 85° angle, or both. 60° applies across the board and is most common. 85° is used for the low-gloss end of the sheen spectrum because of math. One might say it (85° angle) helps to dissect units of flattness into smaller bits so they are easier to discern. Now you know how gloss is measured and why the confusing, subjective finish names are not consistent across paint brands. Now you know of two places where to find Gloss Unit (GU) information for the brand/grade you want to use. Now you know why you will see measurements at 60º and 85º. And that 85º speaks to the lower-gloss end of the sheen spectrum. What you need next is some context for the Gloss Units you now understand and know where to find. So you need a table. And here it is from the Mater Painters Institute, MPI. They got rid of the subjective finish names that paint brands made up and created this table of Gloss Levels 1 to 7 based on Gloss Units (GU). Gloss Units that all brands use to measure gloss and sheen. Hope this table from MPI helps you find the flattest flat finish out there.

Candlelight, CWP, Dynasty, Tedd Wood – Best Option for Painted Finish?

Thanks Buehl. I appreciate you chiming in. I believe I had seen your comments on Omega/Dynasty before, which were among the reasons I sought them out to consider them. I have to say though, that after I posted yesterday my father and I went to check out CWP and Omega again. My dad, who is a retired boat carpenter (specializing in interior finish work), was not thrilled by the finishes on the sample doors in the showroom, especially on the painted doors, which caused me concern. Conversely, he thought the CWP finish was good. Unfortunately the Candlelight and Tedd Wood locations near me aren't open on Saturdays so he couldn't see those. At this point, I am leaning towards Candlelight, especially because they have the door style I like with square corners vs. mitered ones, so I'll be heading back to the showrooms to scrutinize them. Based on some other recent reviews I've seen, I'm beginning to wonder if something has changed at Omega/Dynasty since yours were installed (and others I've seen positive reviews for). It's so hard to tell! I'm glad you are happy with yours though and that they've held up well. It's such a big decision and investment, that any time I hear "they look as good as when they were installed" it makes me thrilled for that buyer. I'm hoping that whatever I choose, I'll be one of those people in a few years! Fingers crossed! Thanks again!

I agree with Faron because (these days) nicotine is not within the standard considerations of typical, every day substances that needs to be cleaned off walls.

Washable matte means a dirty fingerprint, or exploding juice box, or muddy-dog-shake will wipe off the wall without affecting the finish.

Nicotine is a whole other ballgame and I agree satin would be the better fit.

Thank you Faron and Funcolors for your input. Your opinions are well received on this forum and I am glad that you have confirmed what I thought was more practical. Painters, decorators,friends all said matte or eggshell to be "aesthically" correct. I needed an honest answer, not one to play the trend, and I got it from both of you. Thanks again.

In some situations, that's EXACTLY what you have to do for your walls to survive "Real Life"!

I forgot your reference to your ceilings as well...OOPS!
* In YOUR case...I'd consider a GOOD Eggshell for up there.
* Is your ceiling smooth, or popcorn?
* Since nicotine gets on EVERYTHING, you need a bit of sheen to have ANY chance of cleaning it!
