Disposal air switch won't fit hole
Comments (10)Hi, I drilled my own holes for my air switch in my soapstone. The carborundum-encrusted drill bit did a good job, and the standard-issue insinkerator switch dropped right in. I wonder if the original installer used a metric (30mm) bit which squeeked by with the old switch., It's not difficult to enlarge a hole. I would make a template (with the new hole size drilled into it) from a scrap of plywood, and hot-glue it down to the C-top over the existing hole. Then introduce the proper sized bit to the the soapstone. When you have 1/4" of the hole drilled you could snap off the template and finish drilling, but you could as well leave it until you're done. Use a slow-speed drill, and water is not needed, but you can use it to keep down dust. Probably easier to wet it with the template off. Lowe's sells a nice cheap 1 1/4" carborundum bit. Comments (18)I have a fiber optic switch, which is just like an air switch, only it has a sealed gasket so water can't go down it. Like air switches, fiber optic switches are available in several finishes. Waste King made mine, but it works with any brand of disposer. You should be able to see one in a store that sells Waste King GD's. You can buy them online, too, and much cheaper than in the store. Either an air switch or a fiber optic switch is much easier to use than a switch in the wall or under the counter....See MoreWhere is your garbage disposal switch?
Comments (21)Houzz convinced me to get an airswitch and they are apparently pretty uncommon, my electrician and plumber were both surprised to see one, @snappity - actually airswitches are now commonplace. They can be bought anywhere, in quite a lot of finishes, and I rarely see disposal wall switches in any kitchen renovations today. This thread is 12 years old, so even 12 years ago, the airswitch was commonly used. I like a batch feed disposal which has no switch at all. A couple comments on this thread mentioned them, but the batch feed disposal is truly less common....See MoreDisposal air switch--why???
Comments (18)I have a wall switch in the house I'm renting during the remodel. All along I have thought this was the bee's knees, because I was comparing it to my old situation--a switch in the sink cabinet, which had child-proof locks! What a pain that was. The wall switch is wonderfully convenient. Even though the wall switch is an improvement, it does have its down sides: I do occasionally flip the wrong switch, which really makes me jump. But something that no one else has mentioned here is that you often reach for the disposal switch with messy/wet hands. I think the air switch is slightly better suited for that kind of contact....See Moresuzanne_sl
