Paint newly installed vinyl clad windows, exterior!!

The windows are white! They are in a newly constructed workshop and I want them 'Cottage Red' (BM) but

I'm thinking to try Sherwin Williams' line of paints that they say will adhere to vinyl. Is this a good idea?

If so, should I rough up the surface of the vinyl first? They told me I don't need to prime the vinyl--is

that also a good idea--not priming?

I would prime with a 100 percent acrylic bonding primer. Have the primer tinted to a medium gray. I would also sand the vinyl first. Cottage Red is a stock BM color, so that means it will cover very well if you use BM paint instead of having it matched in some other brand. Factory tints are much stronger than machine tinting done at the paint store. If you try to paint Cottage Red over white vinyl that you had custom matched at SW, I bet you are looking at 4 coats minimum.

my best friend did it about 15 years ago. She painted white vinyl windows almond. They have never chipped or discolored and we live in michigan. I thought about it for my new home build. I called the window manufacturer and they said it would void the warranty if you dont use a paint made specifically for vinyl. SW is the best bet I would think, theres has a 50 yr. warranty if I remember right. Good luck.

Thank you, Daisy!! Just ordered the window color ('Cottage Red B.M.') and 'Basket Beige' (SW) for the wood trim! Hubby will pick them up, later today.

Still wonder about priming though!!

Most windows are better than Andersen. They're overpriced garbage living off of their name. I've been installing Softlite windows for over 20 years. I have also installed Marvin, Simonton, Thermal (now out of business), Crestline, Alside and a few other of brand windows. I personally use Alside windows for my business but mainly subcontract for a company that uses Softlite. Softlite would be my second choice out of all of them. Marvin's are probably the best windows of the bunch but definitely not worth the extra cost. Especially if you plan to move in 15 years. New construction type windows are great but can cause a world id issues if not installed 100%correctly. It also adds a major headache and a lot of expense in the future for the new owners or you if you end up staying. If it were me, I would save some cash and have the builders build buck frames and use replacement type windows. Since you're starting with a clean slate you can usually get a better fit and better insulated opening doing it that way.

I think you will end up with big problems. After the vinyl ages and roughens, you could probably paint them, but not when new, plus you're defeating the entire purpose of these being "maintenance free" and never requiring painting as wood windows do. It's too bad you didn't specify these in the contract. I assume this builder buys thousands of windows from the manufacturer at a good price, and if they are special ordered in black, he will pay more.

More suggesting it because there are options to have a wood interior with a non-wood exterior. Wood is great and a lovely material, but there are better options in many cases if you are not compelled to use wood via some sort of historical guideline.

@Denita, thank you for your response. Agree we'd only put shutters on the front left window. Good call on the landscaping. I just trimmed down the bushes and hadn't thought of trimming the tree (Japanese Maple). Since you mentioned it, now it's clearly overgrown to us and heading towards the house. We'll get an arborist over to help with that.

I just pulled my info on Vinlysafe Colors by SW, no where in the flyer does it say you need to prime or rough up first. I know my best friend did neither first, and hers is still great (15 yrs later). I believe the paint already has all the bonding agents needed. Post a photo, when you're done.

I've already purchased the SW Superpaint (the best for vinyl according to the sales rep) and I had them match
the BM 'Cottage Red'! I guess I'm in for many coats to have a good finish according to your report 'PG'!
That's not good news!!!

Oh well--hopefully I'll start painting next week!! I'll be sure and get the pics., Daisy!! :o)
