science project for a 10 year old

A co-worker is asking for help for her 10-year-old son. He has to do a science project of his choosing by the end of January. Any idea where we can look on the Internet for ideas? I don't have kids so I'm stumped but thought of this forum. Thanks in advance.

We use metacrawler and google for search engines. I typed in "kids science projects" and got quite a few hits. The library also has books on science projects for kids that we have used before. Good luck.

I have a great one. A boy at my kids school went quite far in the science fair competition with this one. It's extracting DNA from different things like split peas, onions etc. using stuff around the house. This could be the basic experiment with a more in depth discussion on DNA.

Please share the link to the torque specs. I would have guessed the small torques would have been given in inch lbs vs ft lbs. Examples in your torque specs and my mid 70s Poulan S25 chainsaw major torques: 1. The only ft lbs torques = flywheel nut 13-15, spark plug 18-22, clutch hub 13-51. 2. Some inch lbs as crank case 55-60, connector rod 55-60, highest carb housing 80-90. 3. All others = low in lbs 20-30. 1/4" drive recommended for in lbs and 3/8" for ft lbs torque. I thought these were interesting comparisons. VWs engines taught me to respect torque specs after rebuilding VWs about 15 yrs. I also made some good torque experiments as torquing a 26 ft lb head bolt before it stripped at about 75 ft lbs. Plus, I was not lucky on some "Real Life" snugging on some aluminum where "O" rings vs gaskets were involved. loger

When I was still living in SoCal, I had more latitude in my choices than I do now. One year, on a whim, I attached a 10' bamboo pole (that I had cut from a riverbank) to a steel fencepost driven in deep. A hill of "King of the Garden" limas was planted at the base. The limas went to the top of the pole & beyond, a regular "Jack & the beanstalk"! My children were 8-10 years old at the time, and they were really impressed. Of course, we couldn't pick them that high. Eventually the mass of vines & pods was too heavy for the bamboo, and a windy day broke off the top. If you only want a few bushes, I would recommend "Burpee's Improved". The seeds are very large, especially in the green shell stage... and to a young boy, "big" means bragging rights. ;-) "Fordhook 242" is another large seeded variety.

Allen Garden Club 10 Years Old This Month!

Our anniversary meeting was last night and we had 37 people in attendance which is really good for us since our normal attendance is between 15-20. We gave away a lot of really fun door prizes (all gardening related of course) and even a tree donated by our city organization - Keep Allen Beautiful. We even had four new members join and two who said they will join next month - hopefully. It was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to many more fun meetings and meeting more really nice people here in Allen. I think most people don't realize how much fun and educational it can be to join a garden club. Some people have it in their heads that it is (no offense here) a bunch of women sitting around sipping tea and talking about their gardens. We have men and women in our club. Last night's gardening presentation was on Fairy Gardens and the master gardener who gave the presentation made it so much fun. She even passed around a little container of fairy dust and EVERYONE - even the men left with little sparkles on their cheeks and smiles on their faces. This topic was out of the norm, but for our anniversary meeting was a whole lot of fun. When I get the pictures of the fairy gardens she brought downloaded on my pc, I'll post them because I think y'all would enjoy looking at them.

premix, with chopsticks! put a glob on a paper, right in front of them and they can pick up little bits of the adhesive with the chopstick and put it on the back of each piece. it's a neat way to do it and several have already posted this idea in a few different ways of it... no tubes of the runny stuff and no need to have too much clean up later. the most they're going to have, is a bunch of it dried on their hands. I haven't figured out a way to eliminate that part yet.lol it comes in the little tubs I have mentioned before. sanded grout/adhesive all in one. I get them at Home Depot. my favorite is the antique white.it's an aged vintage look. then I always end up painting over it anyway..lol when I did the frying pan, I used it and then I painte it but I used a crackle paint, under the second coat and that's why the black shows through the second color. I wanted that aged, cracked look or was it a different color under the reddish? I can't remember..I painted it more than once..lol then I used the chopstick to clean off the dry grout from the pieces when it was all dry. remember that comment I made, way back when, about when I was in the court room and I was quietly nipping bits of the grout off of the pan and the judge asked me to leave, cuz of a 'contraband weapon' in the court room? hello, a chopstick??? (not me!..I was with a friend for a civil violation)

There are a number of books out with food-based science projects. That could be an interesting, useful field of study that will explain why we do what we do in the kitchen (rock candy is a fun one with a delicious result to share with the class, for instance). Check the library and don't forget the best reference the library has--the librarian. Good luck.

The son of a friend tested to see how fast hot, cold, distilled, water melted ice. Something as simple as that could be done. Library would be the best place to start or the suggested search engines.

Making a volcano is a lot of fun, but to do a proper science project the student needs to follow the scientific method of asking a question, doing research, forming a hypothesis, showing whatever data is collected, and coming to a conclusion. A 10-year-old should have these parts of his project.

There are many, many ideas on the internet and any bookstore or library has books with projects. Children can also think of their own original ideas.

One project I have liked is: How do our shadows change during the day? (Trace shadow on the ground with chalk several times during the day from early morning to last light. Student should do some research about the relationship of earth and sun. Could take pictures of the process and final chalk drawings to be used on the tri-fold cardboard display which he/she will probably be making.)

Projects with plants are always fun. How will lack of light affect a plant? (One plant in the light, one in a dark closet, one in a little light, etc. All plants treated the same except for amount of light.)

Be careful the student doesn't choose a project which is too tricky or requires too many purchased items.

A volcano would not be allowed to be submitted in our 6th grade science fair... no hypotheses, no conclusion, etc.

Be sure to follow the rules of YOUR school.
