science project for a 10 year old

A co-worker is asking for help for her 10-year-old son. He has to do a science project of his choosing by the end of January. Any idea where we can look on the Internet for ideas? I don't have kids so I'm stumped but thought of this forum. Thanks in advance.

We use metacrawler and google for search engines. I typed in "kids science projects" and got quite a few hits. The library also has books on science projects for kids that we have used before. Good luck.

I have a great one. A boy at my kids school went quite far in the science fair competition with this one. It's extracting DNA from different things like split peas, onions etc. using stuff around the house. This could be the basic experiment with a more in depth discussion on DNA.

Regarding the giant corn of Peru: Staircase Farms of the Ancients. National Geographic (1916) Cuzco Corn O. F. Cook The usual behavior of the Cuzco corn in the United States is to produce plants of enormous size that mature very little seed, often none at all. It has been taken for granted that the size of the plants should be in proportion to the enormous kernels, and that our seasons were not long enough to permit this type of corn to mature. But in Peru one does not see these gigantic, infertile plants, nor any indication that the corn crop requires a large amount of heat to bring it to maturity. The impression one gets from the Peruvian corn-fields is that the plants are not taller than with us and rather more slender, the most striking peculiarity being the prevailing red color of the foliage. The best development and largest ears of the Cuzco corn are found in some of the higher valleys, at elevations between 9,000 and 11,000 feet, in districts where the summer climate is cooler than in any of the corn-growing regions of the United States. Thus it becomes apparent that the possibility of utilizing the Cuzco type of corn in the United States is still practically untried, because of our lack of information regarding the normal behavior of the plant and the natural conditions to which it is adapted. As might have been expected, if these facts had been known, the best results thus far obtained from the Cuzco corn in the United States have been in California, in the cool climate of the coast districts, where there is too little heat for our eastern varieties to thrive." Yes it takes a year or more to go from pollination through seed, seedling, and first bloom. I collected rose seeds last september or october and although I got a dozen to sprout, only one has flowered so far, and a second is aking it's first bud. Also, you have better control over breeding a plant which can be grown inside. I would recommend a fast-growing easy-to-care-for garden vegetable, perhaps beans since they are available in several colors. Gregor Mendel did his famous breeding experiments on peas if I remember correctly.

Sally, I didn't use a pattern. I couldn't find one for a child. So, I took the measurement around Emily's leg just below the knee, at the thickest part of her calf, and at her ankle. Oh, and I measured the length of the portion of the leg that the warmers were to cover (you'll want to make them longer if they will be "slouched" or just the same length if they will be worn "smooth"). I chose my needles (I used a size 6) and actually knit the dreaded swatch with the microspun. That helped me determine how many stitches in stockinette stitch I needed for them. Then I used size 4 needles to do the ribbing (it would stretch to the desired width, but still be able to stay up). Switched to size 6 for the body and then back to size 4 for the lower ribbing. As for the stitch pattern, I just had a great time making it up as I went on the first one, and then copied that for the second. I've only done one other piece where I carried two colors and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I just made sure to twist the yarns every row or so if I had to carry one behind for a few rows. I hope this helps.

On the G6745, half of the cutlery tray(your choice) can slide aside to allow tall items to poke up through where the cutlery tray was for cleaning. Miele was the company who came up with the ideaof this area for cleaning cutlery. We brought our dishes; 3 of each plates; 2 of each sized bowls, coffee mugs and different sized glasses, and placed them in the 40 series Asko, the Benchmark bosch, and the G6745/Dimension. We are presently awaiting the G6745, expecting next week. Our Optima died, and we're replacing it with another Miele; if the water inlet line was the still the same as our Optima, it would have made our picking a dishwasher more difficult.

There are a number of books out with food-based science projects. That could be an interesting, useful field of study that will explain why we do what we do in the kitchen (rock candy is a fun one with a delicious result to share with the class, for instance). Check the library and don't forget the best reference the library has--the librarian. Good luck.

The son of a friend tested to see how fast hot, cold, distilled, water melted ice. Something as simple as that could be done. Library would be the best place to start or the suggested search engines.

Making a volcano is a lot of fun, but to do a proper science project the student needs to follow the scientific method of asking a question, doing research, forming a hypothesis, showing whatever data is collected, and coming to a conclusion. A 10-year-old should have these parts of his project.

There are many, many ideas on the internet and any bookstore or library has books with projects. Children can also think of their own original ideas.

One project I have liked is: How do our shadows change during the day? (Trace shadow on the ground with chalk several times during the day from early morning to last light. Student should do some research about the relationship of earth and sun. Could take pictures of the process and final chalk drawings to be used on the tri-fold cardboard display which he/she will probably be making.)

Projects with plants are always fun. How will lack of light affect a plant? (One plant in the light, one in a dark closet, one in a little light, etc. All plants treated the same except for amount of light.)

Be careful the student doesn't choose a project which is too tricky or requires too many purchased items.

I agree, socks12345.

A volcano would not be allowed to be submitted in our 6th grade science fair... no hypotheses, no conclusion, etc.

Be sure to follow the rules of YOUR school.
