Paint colors that go well with Dark wood trim

Hello, I need help finding paint colors that go well with dark wood trim.

I just moved in with my boyfriend and right now he has this grey/baige color throughout the house. I don't really care for how it looks. So we've decided to repaint the whole house. so i am trying to get ideas on paint colors that might go well with the dark wood trim. we've been looking but cant seem to decide. Please help! :)

Any suggestions or pictures would be helpful

Do you get a sense of the undertone of the wood trim? Orange, red, brown?

Try some very soft yellows. Get some paint chips with names like buttercream and see how they look.

We are currently doing the same thing! Just as the other poster suggested, we went with yellows, oranges etc. I never thought I could be brave enough to use so much color (I'm an antique white girl) but I am loving the contrast of walls and trim. We went with the SW HGTV palette called color pizazz I believe. No messing up, just choose as many or as few of the colors you like and go for it! They all work and compliment each other beautifully. We have dark wood trim in this house and our previous. I tend to stick to more earth tone colors rather than darks. Our current living room/dining room is latte from Restoration Hardware. In the old house our dining room was a turquoise blue and it looked great with the dark trim and hardwood floor. We are also painting two bedrooms and keeping the dark wood trim. One will be a pastel blue (Atmosphere Blue from RH) and the other a very pale pink (Petal from RH) Any contrast will be enough. I would just stay away from dark brown or red shades. The trim could be a stained oak. Ours is mahogany.

Wow. That's stunning. Love stained wood trim. White is fine but sometimes I think it's a snidge overrated. I've lived with both Ã¯Â¿Â½ a lot of stained and a lot of glossy white. Each have a special aesthetic appeal. Deconstructed, flat out - your woodwork is orange. And it's from that color p.o.v. that you should choose all other color harmonies. Brown technically defined is dark orange. At one time that stain color was probably darker and brown-er and what you see now is a a type of patina. Don't ever mess with that patina because it doesn't come in a can. Based on everything you said, I'd steer you toward full spectrum paint colors for the whole house. Top two reasons: modulated quality of light because there are real rooms not an open floor plan and original stain. If you go with 'regular paint', be mindful to choose complex colors or a.k.a. tertiary colors. Tertiary colors are found as you move toward center on a color wheel. They come from a mix of 3 (tertiary). Reason is I'd want to partner the wood's patina with a worthy, complex wall color.

If you have an 80's home, that stained trim may not be anything special. You might just be better off painting it too and giving the house a lighter look. As far as color everyone always suggests beige because it is safe. There are other 'not in your face' colors that will work. A light yellow might work with your house, particularly a vanilla or something that would compliment the gold in the room. You can paint darker colors, but that tends to make a room look darker and smaller. If you truly want something a bit darker, I might go as far as a medium color, but wouldn't go any darker than that.

There are lots of different whites. I'm having medium stained cherry cabs, green granite, and sagey green walls. Stock white - like BM 01 or BM 02, which I have in other rooms, or Muralo White - just looked too stark. I took samples of my wood, wall paint and granite to a paint store - one that sells Muralo,Bruning, etc. They have designers on staff. One of them helped me pick a good off white for the trim, with no charge for the consultation. Sometimes these designers will even make house calls. I think the right shade of white or off white could be great with your cherry and oak.

BM November Rain is a lovely neutral that would work well with dark wood. Also, look at House Beautiful's paint color app. Lots of great suggestions from designers.

A friend of mine just used Harmony and Flowering Herb by Benjamin Moore with stained trim and they look great. Having said that, her stain appears to be dark and has no reddish tones.
