Are these horizontal outlets too high?
Comments (21)Thanks for the responses. Deedles, that's right about where mine are now. I'm sorry you aren't happy with yours, but thank you for sharing your experience. CEFreeman, I think part of the problem is there are several people in the chain of command, or triangle of command, so to speak. There is the manager who is at the office, then the super, then the trades. The manager wants us to go through her, the super tells us to call him with problems, the actual electrician we don't see because we are at work. I give the manager the specifics and the picture but what actually gets passed on is anyone's guess. We are new to this and I am definitely learning as I go. cercis141 and kirkhall, the flooring in the kitchen will be luxury vinyl plank. And we are NOT doing the integrated countertop backsplash. catbuilder, Really, I do think you are right. I should not have relied on a picture (isn't it worth a thousand words?) and should have been more specific. Now, at 42" from floor to bottom of outlet, the electrician didn't "lower" anything, even though I do agee that "low" is not specific enough. All of our outlets in our current builder-grade tract house are about 42". Ineffablespace, I am thinking subway tile but that is as far as I've gotten with that so far. Luxury Vinyl plank flooring and then laminate countertop without the built in backsplash (quartz 4-5 years down the road). In the top picture, the top of the lower horizontal board is about 36.5" up from the concrete. Would just lowering the outlets to the top of those boards be too low do you think? It does seem like it might be. Or does anyone have any recommendations for how high off the finished floor to specify them, if I will be doing a subway tile backsplash, with no countertop built-in backsplash? 38"? 39"?...See MoreOutlets in the countertop . . .
Comments (12)Thanks, all. You know, the magazines all show these sleek, flat islands with the countertop material wrapping down to the floor -- but they sure don't show where to put the outlets! And I had forgotten about the every-four-feet issue. We're in an area with not much of a local code (unincorporated county), but I'll be sure to get that sorted out before planning further. There are only two outlets now -- roughly at 5' in from each end on the 17'9" island. I love the look of the Mockett's. But even if the amperage issue can be resolved, I wonder about the durability of it. It looks like it was designed for an office environment rather than a kitchen. The other looks workable, but it seems to take up a lot of room and looks more like a floor outlet, at least to me. I may need to look further into using the backsplash that is there now. I looked more closeley at the construction just now. It is simply one row of bricks with a thin plywood attached to it, and the laminate backsplash glued to that thin plywood -- not a lot of room to work with. But, the entire bank of cabinets could actually come in from the brick wall a bit without compromising the aisle space too much. That would allow room for construction of a false wall there so wiring could be run and outlets inserted flush. I think that may be the ticket....See MoreOutlets above countertops
Comments (15)Now I'm bummed. This is another area of my remodel I did not address with the KD and electrician. This is a little off topic but because of GW and the ABB club, I wouldn't pick out a backsplash material until the countertops were installed. My KD (who I really like and has done a great job) was shocked. She had never had a client not choose & order their backsplash once the tops were chosen. She warned me it could delay our project. Some tile orders take 6 weeks or more and even if the was tile was immediately available, their installer would most likely be booked. I just picked a backsplash yesterday and i love it. But look at all the switches & outlets that are going to disrupt it....See Moreif you have low horizontal outlets, how did you handle...
Comments (3)I was able to find two pictures in a magazine where the outlet and switch are separate but near each other--in one they were in the same line; in the other, the switch was higher on the wall. Both looked fine, so I think that's what I'll do. But I was amazed at how hard it was to find pictures of kitchens with ANY sort of outlet or switch visible--does everyone with a "magazine" kitchen get plugmold or mocketts, or do they just airbrush them all out?...See MoreRelated Professionals
