Paint Selection Advice

I'm repainting my kitchen walls and would appreciate some advice on which paint brand to select. I'm currently experiencing some analysis paralysis.

The walls have a subtle Venetian plaster texture on them (I hate it, but not enough to undertake THAT project right now.) and are painted in a semi- or full gloss paint. I'm thinking semi as a finish. (No kids, but I am a clean freak, so the walls get cleaned often in the kitchen.)

I have a soft aqua from BM picked, but am not sure I want to use their paint. I am a little intimidated to use Aura after the application stories I have read, I have a lot of small spaces to paint so I can't use a roller for much of it. Plus I know it's weird, but I just like painting with a brush. Maybe the Regal?

I also have access to P&L, Muralo/Mythic and Graham at another store. I am going to use Muralo Ceramic for the cabinets & cabinet doors. Would that also be a good choice for the walls? Do the Muralo tints match other companies' colors well? Is there another option all together that I should be looking at?

You have some great choices to choose from.

Muralo Ultra Ceramic is an awesome choice for walls too. Just statring to work with Graham Paints so I don't know their product that well.

Pratt & Lambert - Accolade. Accolade is awesome and another good choice.

As far as tints (colorant) and matching, that's just one part of the equation. Base factors in too. The biggest factor, however, is WHO. Who is doing the color matching for you and how good are they at their job.

Top tiers, name brands -- it doesn't matter which one to be honest. Chose the resource that has the BEST tinter you can find and the best SERVICE. Every time I say stuff like that shock waves roll across paint and color worlds.

But it's true - the most bottomous bottom line is SERVICE and KNOWLEDGE. Knowledge not just about paint but about color too. Because with the advances in the science and technology of paint, you really have to split hairs to delineate how or why one brand's upper tier is better than another.

Only things that can give a flagship or independent paint store a leg up on competition are innovative color collateral, above-average paint/product knowledge, seriously real color expetise, and outstanding customer service. It's not even about price any more.

Faron and the store where he works is a good example. I have no doubt many of his customers drive by several big box stores, and a handful of lame-a$$-contractor-focused independent paint stores, and probably even a few shee-shee rocked-out *big brand* stores just to get to Faron.

Find "your people" and buy your paint from them.

WOW! That sounds kinda Stud!

Well....I'll count ACE-Royal, Ralph-Lauren, & C2 in the "Brands that Rock" category...;-)

But as my "Color-Contessa" Fun-C states, you can't go wrong with P & L Accolade, OR Muralo. I'd use the Ceramic on the walls as well!

Give your store time to work up a match.
Over the years here, I've gotten DAMN good at tweaking color-matches. I often start with a scanner, but usually back off on some key colorants. It's easier to ADD colorant than it is to subtract!!!!
I often avoid formula-scans with a Brown choice in them...I'd rather use a match-choice with Black in it, and back off some. Brown is usually used in a much bigger amount re. to Black, and can make a color too "muddy", and damn-near impossible to correct away from....

That's just ME tho....

Sorry, I just don't see the craftsman style working here, windows OR door. I'm not coming up with a door that would permit you to look outside. I see a solid door or one with two rectangular lights at the top -- you'd have some light, but couldn't see out (and no one could see in). Think twice about hanging shutters too narrow to (visually) completely cover a window. If you are going to paint the door, don't spend a lot on wood good enough to stain.

Oh good points, I hadn't thought about the competition between hickory & knotty alder. Unfortunately I'm a bit alone in this decision, so I need help thinking of the things I'm not thinking of. DH grew up in northern Scandinavia so his only opinion on anything wood is "clear whitewood". We are exact opposites on most things decor/materials. No help! I like the true "brown" coloring of alder, and have considered clear alder in a medium deep offee and hickory flooring with a heavily cut spice stain (saw some gorgeous hickory floors on here lastnight). I love rustic touches, but don't want my house to resemble a rickety cabin. :)

Pattycakes, I'm glad you don't think velvet is dated. It's either that or taffeta, LOL, I found a real steal on some lighter milk chocolate taffeta fabric today that's pretty hard to resist, price-wise, so I may use that instead. Pmartin, that cording is blue, brown and almond like the silk, and I'll use it on the outer seam of the duvet. Tomorrowisanotherday, you sure know your paint - you absolutely nailed it on the recommendation of SW Macadamia! I went by Sherwin Williams today and picked up some sample strips, and the Mac matches the silk perfectly.....it's such a pretty color! I think that would be ideal for the wall color. If DD wants to go with another color, Quietitude or Rainwashed both looked great with the toile Four Seasons. It's great to have choices...... Deeinohio - great idea about making the headboard a slipcover, I'm working on that idea. The only problem with that is that I wanted to tuft the headboard, or use nailheads, and I can't do that if it slips on and off. I'm still on the fence thinking that over. Kimiko232, I agree, a milk chocolate would be better than a deep, dark brown. I'm afraid if it's too dark that would be too strong against the lighter almond and robins egg. I'm hoping to get a soft, airy look for the room, so think I need to stay on the lighter end of the color spectrum. Thank you all for your comments and advice. I'm learning a lot as I go. I found a tone on tone silk stripe remnant today that matches the silk in the duvet that I decided to use for the chair, instead of a darker brown. I think that will look better, especially since the walnut stain on the chair is already so dark that a darker brown would just be too much of the same color. I'll make some decisions on the upholstered headboard within the next few days, now that I have some direction.

It's hard to tell because I'm looking at a photo but it appears your tile has a yellow or green undertone to it (like I said, it's hard for me to tell from a photo as everyone's monitor reads color differently) whereas Wind's Breath has more of a red undertone that will fight it. If I'm correct and the undertone is green in the tile, the Nature's Essentials will be a better match. Best to buy a pint of both and paint them on the wall next to the tile to see before committing.

I'd been leaning toward the Muralo myself, glad to know it's a good choice for the walls too.

Would it be better to bring in a painted sample (small board) with the color to have them match from that than to say it's BM "Covington Blue" and look it up in a database?
