Accent color for white/cream couches and brown tables

Hello All, my living room has white couches,and dark coffee colored tables. And a lot of art in sepia and black and white tones. I havent figured out the color of the curtains yet. Neither can I figure out the color of the wall.

I dont think like the look of a yellow like SW blonde against the dark brown woods, maybe I havent looked at it enough. I dont want to do blue walls.

Help! I need color advice

Is your style of decorating contemporary or traditional? If contemporary, I could see a very bold color with the black and white art.

They are showing a lot of striking colors this year. Some in lime. Most of us here seem to lean to the traditional. I'd get a kick out of seeing some sleek designs and intense color. Not my style but I have a lot of appreciation for it. Like staying in a chic, modern botique hotel.

What's your exposure? North, east? How much natural light? What's the primary use of the room? I personally love paper-bag brown, F & B London Stone is my current favorite version of this color.

I would change out the pillows on the sofa (or at least add a pillow) that has a print with some of the blue you want to incorporate into the room. I would do a lighter gray on the walls in the living room with a darker version of the blue on the accent wall, then I'd carry the lighter blue into the kitchen. I love yellow but I would only use it for accents on fabrics or art because its hard to find a yellow wall color like the one in your pillows that works well on walls. It is usually either too stark or too bright.

Really nice room. Looks comfortable and inviting. Good choice w/new sofas. Like the fireplace as is ... but less clutter could improve the look of it. Not sure what the picture is above the piano. If it is a family photograph, reframe it and the family photo on the mantel with the same frames and put both above the piano. Really like your coffee table. One day it will be a valuable antique if you don't booger it up. So, for the coffee table, consider taking the table to a glass company and having a dark gray tinted thick glass top created for it -- no refinish for the table necessary. (Alternately, cover everything but the top and paint the top only -- perhaps black or else the same white as your cabinets.) Do the same for your current end table as you do for the coffee table. If you're going to add a second end table, since matching the existing one would likely prove difficult, consider a totally different look -- perhaps a wood 2-drawer filing cabinet? http://realsolidoak.com/office.html

I LOVE that lamp! Thank you so much! Yes, his art mostly consists of old black and white photographs, old wooden snow shoes and skis (this is a ski house). He's about to downsize from his primary house in another city and spend more time at the ski house. His primary house has some more colorful art in it that is very beautiful, so I can probably facilitate him bringing some of the art up there.

HI there, thank you for the response. I am open to using just white dove. Also the product shown above is not the final draft as they are trying to get the colors right and have been sanding off to attempt different colors before painting a final draft. I realize not everyone is a fan of the glaze look or may be out of trend to some of extent. however, I do like it and if anyone has any suggestions to a brown glaze I would greatly appreciate it. I am doing this kitchen for my personal preference and not to follow a trend. Again, I am open to a single color but I would like to try a glaze look on the sample kitchen cabinet before making that decision. I think its nice the painting company is willing to try to match the colors and idea first before making a final draft and saying this is it. They have been coming back more for feedback. What about a silver sage kind of colour? My original thought was a turqoisey blue/grey, but if you don't like blue...

Joyce, that's the second time I've seen pics of your home. You have beautiful rooms and really great style! Love the green!

I have lots of coffee colors in my house with Sepia prints and black and white family photo wall. My furniture is all dark too. This is Restoration Hardware Cappuccino paint. Maybe some chocolate drapes to go with??

Update: Green is one of my accent color - i found some green pillows that looked amazing with black and white(cream actually) Who knew?

Now I am just stuck with choices for curtains. I do like the idea of chocolate colored drapes but am afraid that would be too much brown considering I have brown tables, the couch has brown legs.

The style of the room is not traditional but not quite contemporary either. The room that kathy posted is very elegant, love the color. That and the cappucino are top contenders in my mind.

Since i cant afford to go custom with my drapes and have no sewing skills whatsoever I am at the mercy of PB, JCP, BBB and Linens & Things for available colors in curtains.

Keep those ideas coming

We painted the room SW Macadamia - fits the bill perfectly tan with just a hint of greenish brown kwim. Thanks for the help.

Now that we're done painting I think we need some more color. There's Black and white in the rug and the pillows. And I put some green pillows on the cream couches along with the black and white. Neutral color on the walls.

What color drapes can I do or do I have to go with a linen - in material as well as color?

I also got some green pottery.

I still yearn for that WOW factor

Any ideas?

I was trolling JCP and saw these panels, which intrigued me. Click on the link, and then click on one of the grasses panels to see the colors. The dark dune might be wonderful, give you some texture and a modern but not stark feel in the space. Can't tell for sure if the color would work, I think you need to see it in the space, but I love the design, perhaps hung from rings? I think the chocolate might be too dark, and the green too green.

Add a touch of red somewhere. It's the opposite side of the color wheel. I promise it won't look like a Xmas tree. LOL. Try it, you may like it.

Go to Lowe's & check out their draperies. For non-custom-they have a decent selection! My daughter's new home has almost the same color family as yours and yesterday I spotted some GREAT subdued green, soft terra cotta, & cream striped ones-very nice.
