DVD recommendations?

Next weekend I will be having my two grandsons over for 2 nights. They are 8 and 11 years old. I want to keep them busy and entertained and would like to rent 2 or 3 DVD's.

Can you tell me what DVD's you've seen recently with your kids that you all enjoyed?

Kids now days have seen so many of the NEWER movies, how about some YOU liked when younger. They may get into that. Example: Abbot and Costello movies (then practice Who's on first with them). Or old Disney movies...Swiss Family Robinsons, Old Yeller and Savage Sam, etc.

I liked "School of Rock" with Jack Black. Funny movie, the children are a bit precotious, but funny with Jack, and funny for the adult watching it as well. No bad language.

"Star Wars" is good. No swearing or undesirable images.

What a good grandma you are planning their visit, its lovely. Enjoy your time with them. You could also read to them.

Those "Lemmony Snicket" books are excellent.

There are two issues you need to consider: (1) connecting to the television and (2) connecting the unit to the Internet. (1) To connect the player to the TV, you need a composite connection - the yellow RCA jack (video) plus red and white for audio. Down the road, when she gets a new TV, you'll disconnect the three wires (yellow, red, white) and replace it with a single HDMI cable which will handle digital video and audio. At that point she'll go "wow" and probably wonder why she waited so long to get a new TV. ;-) There's two reasons to connect to the Internet. The first is that the player needs periodic updates. The second is to use the advanced features of the player for things like streaming video. (2) To connect to the Internet the player is going to use either a wired connection (via an Ethernet cable) from the player to the router or wirelessly via WiFi. Frankly, if you want to go the wireless route, investing in a player with built in WiFi is going to eliminate a layer of technology and agnst. How she wants to use the player is going to effect how you connect to the Internet and the cost of the player. If she does not plan on using the advanced features, then a cheaper player, without built-in WiFi, and a length of Ethernet cable will be the cheapest solution. At update time, connect the player to the router via the Ethernet cable, allow the unit to update, and put the cable back in the closet. If she want to use the advanced features (and there is lots of good, free stuff out there) then WiFi is the way to go. Setting up WiFi is much like any other wireless device, you'll select the name of the network from a list and enter the password. Remember that password is not the same as PASSWORD. I hope this clarifies everything for you.

I've often recommended meditation oasis podcasts which are available for free. There are other podcasts on line for free too. TR is right that even 5 minutes to start is helpful. It is a practice so you will get better at it over time. Also, I think it's important to set your expectations. People think the goal is to erase all thoughts and then when they can't do it, they've failed. Instead with mindful meditation, the goal is to become aware of the now...not re-live the past or pre-live the future, but just be aware of what's happening now....what you hear, smell, feel...focus on your breath as a way of staying connected with the now. When your mind wanders, and it will, then just gently bring it back. Whatever happens during meditation is supposed...there's no right or wrong. You might benefit from watching this lecture which includes a meditation led by Jon Kabat-Zinn. He has done a lot of work on mindfulness based stress reduction and has worked with many patients with chronic pain. You might also sign up for the Chopra Center newsletter. Several times throughout the year, they run a free 21-day meditation challenge which is to encourage you to develop a habit of daily meditation. They will email you a new meditation every day. They are usually 15 min in length and are slightly more prescriptive....the last set was very nice on creating abundance in your life. They also sell them as a CD set if you're interested. Another place with free podcasts that is supposed to help you learn to meditate is the meditation podcast that is supposed to be helpful if listened on earphones. I WAS ABLE TO FIX MY 32 INCH PHILIPS MAGNAVOX TV WITH YOUR HELP BY REPLACING A 29 CENT CAPACITOR AND I AM THRILLED WITH THE RESULT-IT ACTUALLY WORKS PERFECT. Thanks everyone. I guess I'm trying to avoid so many boxes/clutter, so the idea of a combined unit is attractive. But I also hear you loud and clear about one component going bad before the other. Well, I guess I'll just make the usual rounds to see what is available and/or on sale: Target, Sears, Best Buy etc. as well as scope some online sites. I wish I knew more about all this. . .but electronics is "not" my area.

Board games are always a good way for you to spend quality time together. Don't forget those as well. They are cheap to buy, if you don't have any.

They are coming over to visit YOU... not to watch DVDs.

Play games, read stories, do crafts.... make memories!

Thanks all. I should have explained that I DO other things with them as well. Last visit, I taught them how to play poker. LOL
We make brownies, do crafts, and play other games, but I do need to keep them occupied for two days and two nights, so wanted suggestions for movies we could curl up and watch together in the evenings.

I know that in a few more years, they'll be too busy to visit grandma, so these visits are very special to me.

I haven't seen it, but I would think "Invincible" may be really good.

And, I second the "Star Wars" movies. Here are some more they may like:

I would maybe stay away from "Lemony Snicket's..." I know some 8 yr olds that were scared by it. I'm sure you don't want to have to deal with a scared kid that can't sleep!

I would bet they may even have some ideas themselves on what they may want to see. Just make sure the rating is age appropriate! Enjoy your time with them.
