Semi gloss or BM Satin Impervo for cabinets??

Hi!

We are days away from having the trim, doors, and cabinets throughout our house changed from natural maple(2.5 year old house) to a shade of white. I originally requested the contractor use Benjamine Moore Satin Impervo throughout the home even though he had voiced an initial preference for Hirshfields Heavy Duty Semi Gloss. I was worried semi-gloss would be too shiny but now some friends who are not by any means painting pros have told me they think I should use the semi-gloss paint that he originally recommended. NOTE: The contractor did tell me BM Satin Impervo is a fabulous paint too...it just wasn't his first choice.

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF THESE TWO PAINTS?

***99.9% of the paint will be applied via a sprayer...very little brushwork and probably none that will be visible to someone walking into the home.

***Hirshfields is a paint store in the Midwest. I have no idea what it compares to in other parts of the country....sorry about that but it is a reputable business.

I have a book on kitchen remodeling for the do-it-yourselfer and it actually recommends BM Satin Impervo for cabinets. That said, I have never used either

I am currently in the process of painting my kitchen cabinets. I am using BM Satin Impervo - Indian White. I have never used BM paint before but I am loving it so far. I thought the paint was pretty expensive. But, I feel that it is well worth it. I am brushing the cabinets but, am considering spraying the doors. We have 23 doors which we are building ourselves.

Hi BINK. I think the oil is fine. Rhome410, among many others here, painted hers in the oil and has been very happy for a number of years, I was just afraid of the yellowing that occurs with oil paint over time so went with the waterborne. Any cab color I tried with the least amount of yellow in it looked horrible with my gray-ish Carrara. My floors are white oak as I didn't want the redness of the red oak. They are finished in Bona. The stain is a mix of 75% Jacobean and 25% Black Coffee (similar to Black Walnut). I sometimes wish they were darker, but the I have a hard enough time keeping them looking clean with three cats running around. Darker would make the cat hair stand out so much more. No offense to anyone with partial overlay, but I wouldn't want it in my kitchen either. It definitely looks great with some eras, but not with the look I was trying to achieve. I would have loved inset also, but couldn't afford the extra cost. Unfortunately, my zone 8 is Washington state. Sorry! Looking forward to seeing your kitchen!

Oil will yellow, which could be good or bad depending on the color---I actually love yellowed Acadia White on our oil-based Impervo trim, and was bummed that the actual Acadia White is not as creamy! Also, for whatever it's worth, our built-ins painted in oil-based *still* reek three years after being painted. We had it on our old kitchen cabinets and it seemed to hold up decently---only a few chips over three years, and that's on partial inset cabinets, so lots of pressure on the doors. I could see some potential issues in trying to match the color to do touch-ups, though.

Check into PPG's Breakthrough paint. I haven't used it but saw some samples at the paint store. Tried to mar it with my fingernail. Couldn't. Then I tried scratching it with a coin and the only result was a bit of metal from the coin rubbed off onto the paint. The person at the paint store said that the paper mills are using it on concrete and driving forklifts over it. Supposed to have excellent adhesion, early blocking resistance and very good elasticity.

Hmm...what to do now? On Friday I told the contractor we wanted BM Satin Impervo. Over the weekend, I changed my mind after several people told me to definately go with semi-gloss or even gloss so I called him yesterday. He had ended up placing the order for the BM Satin Impervo after I gave him the go ahead on Friday but was able to cancel it yesterday because it had not been tinted yet.

Is it possible to get just as good of a result from semi-glass vs the BM Satin Impervo because I have to call this guy back again and tell him to switch it again, he is going to think I am nuts! Really...looking at the end result, will I actually notice a difference between these two kinds of paints or not?

I actually was going to use a semi-gloss but the guy at BM told me that most people use satin. I live off the coast of NC-Wilmington area. I am not a pro by any means but, I have done a lot of painting. The glossier the paint the more imperfections show. I think it would really be a personal preference though. I didn't want anything to formal. I am going for a french country / cottage style.

We just had our 20 year old pickled oak cabinets painted Sebring White-BM Satin Impervo. They look wonderful...totally updated the kitchen (along with new tile floor, new countertop, new appliances, new all paint, etc...lol). I really like the paint and our very experienced painter did too. It is not a shiny finish, but it is a very durable finish. I didn't want a gloss...as puff said, it would show every single imperfection. If I could figure out how to post pics, I would post. But I can email you one.
