'Pre-primed' fiberglass door--should I re-prime?

We just bought a Reliabilt (made by Jeldwen) fiberglass patio door w/ blinds between the glass. The painting directions that came w/ the door say that it is not necessary to prime, but I wanted to ask the pros what you would advise. The BM dealer told me I should prime w/ XIM Bonder. Agree or disagree?

Oh, and I am planning on using a cranberry color in Aura Exterior (our BM dealer is actually supposed to be getting the Exterior in tomorrow for the first time). So that brings up whether I should re-prime simply so I can use a gray basecoat, too....

That's what I would do,factory pre primed materials are not the best.

I never prime a factory primed fiberglass door. It's a waste of time and effort. The factory prime on the Jeld-Wen door is an excellent primer and is ready to paint.

Follow the instructions.

I would bite the bullet and go with another full coat of primer after all the caulking,filling,prep,etc.The second primer coat will also aid in re-covering dinks made during installationas well as cuts. Money well spent,imho You also want to make sure the back side has been primered as well,commonly refered to as "back primed".

And though Casey is most likely dead-on, it never hurts to prime the so-called pre-primed doors. Since you're using it as an exterior door, you might as well use an exterior primer under your exterior paint. Some of the first apartments I looked at had interior doors for the front door. My parents said no and drove to a different part of town to look...

Generally speaking, it's not a good thing to leave wood primed and not finished for so long, but I don't know that I would re-prime. Perhaps a good power wash and staining would be sufficient....depends on the condition of the primer coat. Of course, the safest thing to do would be to re-prime everyhing with a high quality slow drying oil primer, but that would increase the cost of the paintjob. If the cedar is rough sewn, then you really don't want to paint that. Stain is preferred.

Not much. What is up with you? You need to use an oil based primer, preferably a long drying one, though a fast dryer will do the trick. Most of the latex primers that say on the label that they are stain killers are really not.

That's good to hear that Jeldwen's prime is that good. Not priming sounds great to me, except--will it matter that the color I'll be using is a deep cranberry?

It won't really matter because you are using Aura, which is self priming and covers great. The reason Aura was invented was so that we don't have to use grey primers anymore...take advantage of that.
