Major help with granite in kitchen!

I hope the topic about Absolute Black granite has not gotten to old yet. I have my own concerns and questions that may have been answered previously but wanted to get some responses. I am looking at AB with Leather finish for my kitchen.

1) Fingerprints - will this be an issue?

2) With a leather finish I am sure there will have to be a smooth or polished edge once an edge is put on the slab. Will this make the edges an eyesore and different from the texture and color of the rest of the slab?

3) How much more maintance and dirt will this type of color and texture show from other choices?

4)What type of color change should I expect once sealer is applied?

5)What other color choices do some of you recommend for my kitchen that I could look at. It doesn't have to be anything close to AB I am open for anything. I plan on going with antique cypress cabinets (natural), stainless steal appliances, old St.Louis brick floors, with antiqued island, 12' ceilings, brick arces and old pine beams. Also am thinking about covering kitchen ceiling with dirty top heart pine. From this discription what would be a good flowing color for the granite countertops?

Any advice or pictures would be very helpfull. Thanks

sounds like you could go with a soapstone...

my friend has AB leather finish, her edges are not polished, they are leathered too. there was no color change after her sealer. She used a very reputable fabricator, but the guys bringing the slab into the house ate greasy MCdonalds right before and their handprints showed up on the surface after they carried the huge slab in. The fabricator had to come out twice to "dilute" the image, never totally left, but she would have to point it out to you for you to notice now. I honestly don't know if fingerprints show up now.

I also heard a story once from a builder how he installed a black leather granite in a kitchen before drywall was done. The fine drywall dust got in all the crevices and they couldn't get it clean. They actually had to unistall it, take it outside and pressure wash it to get it clean...

A good friend of ours has only island seating in her family. They have three boys and entertaining is strained in her home, even her own family around the "table" doesn't fit very well as the boys get older. She seems happy with it, but it's something I would never suggest. In my old house, which had a small but very well laid out kitchen, the open wall had cabinets with a table level counter coming out of it like a T. It wasn't big, but it was big enough for our family of 5 to eat there, the kids sat there for their snacks and it was even really nice for rolling out dough. Maybe something like that could work? Have to laugh at the Olympics mention buehl, I don't usually watch much TV, but I've been glued and seen the very same ad. I've also seen pet food ads with nice kitchens- that bacon strips dog may be pretty uncouth, but he has a stylin' kitchen!

Kirkhall, when I first visited this discussion yesterday or the day before?, there were numerous pictures in the original post. Now I only see one and the writing ends in mid-sentence. Odd. And too bad because the photos were gorgeous. I think this is a glitch Houzz needs to address. I've read somewhere that they have a character/size limit for posts. But when you write a post, there's no little box showing you how many characters you have left. So how do we know when we've reached the limit?

Thanks all for your thoughts and suggestions. Here's a new sketch with the island reduced to 4x7 with the prep sink centered. Does this work better and give enough room for the aisles? I also made room for a larger hood and moved the skinny windows further from the rangehood regarding other suggestions- the little "L" is holding up part of the house so it needs to stay. Its 3' long. To the left of the fridge is 36" of uppers and a wine fridge with small 12" cabinet next to it. I think I would leave the ovens where they are otherwise I wont have any landing space next to the fridge. I think I can deal with only 24" to the left of the sink with the window over the sink and the large expanse of counter to the right. The view is out the side of the house over the driveway so not the greatest but ok. After confiring with the DH we would like to keep the uppers. Probably will do glass fronted cabinets to feel a bit more airy. We talked about doing open shelving but while I love the look I think its less practical in day to day use. Would have loved the banquette in my early days with young kids but find them hard to get in and out of now. Would look really pretty though. Might think about that one. Pantry will store small appliances, food, little used dishware, etc. for our day to day we will have more than enough storage in the main kitchen. Pantry is a bonus since we have a lot of space in that area. No display for "pretties" needed! The pantry might be better tucked on the wall behind the fridge. Will try that with the architect. The covered porch opens to the side door and the driveway and offers some protection from the elements- we are in MI. It would be where groceries are unloaded. Also kids can come right into the mudroom/ laundry with sports equipment, school books and dirty laundry. There are french doors to the left of the breakfast area that open out the the deck/backyard area for entertaining and BBQ. Again thanks for all your help so nice to have other eyes to see things with!

can I just ask you to please, please, change out those lights?? how in the world can you even see to cook? seriously, if you can't do recessed lighting right now, go buy this light and have your other half stand on the island to switch it. Lowes Kichler Barrington. Make sure you get the LED bulbs, 75Watt, in the DAYLIGHT temp. or if you really want some light, do one of these styles Ok, got that out of the way. Who's doing the painting? I don't see the terra cotta tiles working w/that other flooring, or the gray/taupe tones. if you want a spanish style tile/kitchen, go for this look (color-wise, and the tile floors) paint, hardware on your cabs, new counter and tile splash, make a big diff. and if you're going to paint, add some boxes on top of what you have to gain more storage you can do whatever size you need. it's simple to have boxes built, and painted. you can leave them open, add doors, or add glass. or maybe this one w/a granite. this is White Dove work w/your cabs. update the things around them

pence - I was looking at trying to get something that looked like soapstone but half the price. That is why me and the wife choose this color and texture.

I'm not sure where everyone is, but in central NJ, soapstone is costing us only about $100 above the price of a level 2 granite.

fivefootzero, what place are you using for the soapstone. We were thinking of using soap stone in the Bathroom for the shower enclosures but haven't been able to find a place for it.

We were looking for a solid black granite when we first started our remodel too. We ended up ruling Absolute Black altogether (all finishes) because I heard & saw way too many unfortunate stories about each kind. The polished kind shows etching very easily and visibly. Even water left on the counter for a very short period of time has left marks on my aunt's Abolute Black countertops. Not to mention spaghetti sauce splatters and squirts of lemon juice (those are the worst on Absolute Black! You're left with permanent blemishes.) We found the honed kind shows oil (it stands out) and thus a lot of fingerprints and other smudges become very visible. If that's gonna drive you crazy, then forget the honed! Leather finish could work, and is probably the best of the three, but I just wasn't crazy about the dreary look of the leathered Absolute Black.

Have you considered black quartz countertops? We fell in love with the black ones that have small glass or mirror pieces in it so it gives it the look of Absolute Black but with some sparkle. There seems to be a trend (around here at least) of people going with quartz countertops. I've seen a number of recent remodels that have used it. They are beautiful and extremely durable! And very reasonably priced.

Soapstone is also beautiful but I recommend it for a certain type of person. Are you the type of person that likes things that look worn and little bit beat up? Do you appreciate the patina that develops with usage? If so, soapstone could be an option for you! I highly recommend getting samples from local places and putting them on your counter for a couple weeks so you can drop things on them like keys, glasses, phones, etc. That will give you an idea of how it could look over time, how banged up it will get, etc. There are so many different varieties out there and I found they vary widely in terms of softness. I spent 4 months searching for soapstone until I found a variety that had both the color and hardness I wanted.

A lot of people have Virginia Mist honed. A flat black surface. I think boxerpups' kitchen has it.

Hi Turkeynutz,

AB has issues and since I do not have AB or AB honed I can
not really comment on the struggles. Mountaineergirl is
right I have Jet mist and I love it. ( so sweet to remember)

NOW for your wonderful sounding space of antique cypress
cabinets (natural),SS appliances, brick floors, with
antiqued island, 12' ceilings, brick arces and old pine
beams. There are literally 1000s of options. From Costa
Esmeralda, Shiva Cream, White Calcutta Marble, Yellow
River, Red Dragon, Juparana, Giallo, Rainforest....

What colors do you like? For now I will post some ideas
but know you have a world of possibilities and with your
elements you might want to think about going in a direction
that has movement beauty and creativity to go with your
fantastic cypress, brick floors and open ceiling.

If there are some below you like more, let me know and
I will try to find a few more.

I got estimates from 3 different places. Garden State Soapstone, Tri-State Stone, and Bucks County Soapstone.
