BM Aura - read a lot but a couple questions..

Hi again! :)

I'm still planning on painting my bathroom red but have other projects in line first. I also have more questions.

I thought I had decided on BM Regal in the pearl finish because I'm sloppy at the sink (water/mascara marks). The more I think about it, I'd prefer a matte finish and am strongly considering biting the bullet and buying BM Aura even though I've ready a lot of mixed reviews.

The room is roughly 8'x8' with not a lot of wall space. 8' ceilings. One window, about 32" w if I remember right.

A few questions:

1.After curing a month, do you think it would be fine for wiping water/mascara slop marks at the sink area? - No burnishing?

2.Did you find that it touches up well?

3.For such a small space, do you think I should buy the extender? Most of the negative things I read were large spaces with tall ceilings and a lot of natural light.

4.When rolling a new section of paint, I want to overlap the edge of the section of just finish, right?

5. Oh, also I'm planning on replacing the towel bar so I'll have holes to patch. I was going to prime first so will I be ok to not have funny flash marks when I'm done painting? Was planning on using either Zinsser or BM primer (both tinted).

1. Yes. I have it in small powder room in a deep red. Wall around the sink are routinely slashed. The water will leave streaks (in any finish btw) that are easily wiped off with a damp rag.
2. It does touch up well, but since it washes clean so readily, really haven't needed to in the powder room.

4. As with any painting project, it's best to keep a wet edge. In such a small area, cut in the whole room first, then simply roll the entire room.
5. Really no need to prime -just spot prime your patches with Aura - just be sure to feather out the edges so you do not see your patch job through the two top coats.

RE 4. People make it sound like this paint drys in 30 seconds so I was concerned about the wet edge. Sounds like I should be ok.

Being a bathroom I was thinking it would be best to prime first because of steam. (Although we do have a fan.)
Yay, for skipping the primer. Does it matter how far out itÃ¯Â¿Â½s feathered?

My walls are currently a white flat paint (builder grade something). Do you think the two coats of red will cover or is it possible I'll need three?

Also, the gap around my sink is rather wide. The old caulking got weird and dried out. I tore the old out and recaulked with the most expensive, paintable caulking I could find for bathrooms. Is it typical to paint the caulking or leave it white? I painted it in my other bathroom but the gap is minimal. I'm assuming I shouldn't, that way I don't have too big of a mess if I have to redo the caulking again?

kim, if your budget allows yes I would choose Aura over the others. It's not so much in a rich nice color because I see rich nice colors with several different brands. The main thing about seeing color is the light and the amount of light and how light approaches a given wall. Aura uses what is called an Advanced particle technology. When Aura was introduced there came more tint with the new formulas as much as 16 oz. for some of the colors. The tints are a waterborne colorlock system where the polymer chains are fused more tightly around the low voc pigment particles. The tint dispersion amount can be up to 16 oz. for some of the tint bases. The pigments are absolutely 100% waterborne acrylic as compared to others and BM old formulas. The waterborne acrylic colorants are one of the biggest things noticeable about the Aura paint line. I have been using Aura for customers since 2007 and still love working with it. Acrylics do have a learning curve. The tint system is one of the things as I mentioned that makes the quality of the paint and the final lasting color you will see on your wall. Hope you enjoy.

Yeah, I use the whizz rollers a lot in the decorative finishes end. what paintguy said. Lets see if I can explain it a little easier. Also go back up and look at the finished photo rschmitty posted of the inside corners; click for a close up. Imagine taking your brush with paint in it and running down the wall and not going back to smooth out the brushed stroke. Just say there was an excess amount of paint in that brush and the pressure one was using may have oozed out more paint on the edges and if you don't smooth that amount of thickness out it will have a different thickness; not to mention a possible sheen difference because of using a brush and then rolling with a roller. Then you pick up your roller and now you are getting close to the corner where you cut in. Of course everyone wants to be careful when trying to roll right up to an inside corner, so I would imagine some folks will just try and paint up to their cut line when they should be going over it with a tight roll as close as possible. Going over that cut line will also help with the difference in the smooth brush look verses the roller look. Really it just takes practice to get a good tight cut with a roller and to keep away from a ceiling or another corner. Make sure your roller is not turned with the closed end of the frame when you get right near that corner. You want to get a good tight roll down the wall. No, your rolling and brushing should have the same amount of mil thickness when applying. In the end it is about making sure you have smoothed out that last rolled or brushed section to prevent any type of changes that could occur. la koala something you might want to try first is doing some dry test runs with your brush just to get the feel of it and how to hold, the amount of pressure, the feathering of the tips, the direction you follow; the same with the roller. This will help you become a little familiar with your tools. After your dry run tests get yourself a piece of poster board draw a horizontal line and a vertical line pretending this is your ceiling and corners. Put your real paint skills to work here and practice a little with the paint this time. In rschmitty's photo, it appears as if parts of the corners were not rolled as tight and they were just rolled right next to the brushed edge and if you look at other parts of the same corner it appears as if there is a complete same finished look meaning there isn't an obvious line there because the rolled met the brushed and evened out. Definitely not saying that's what happened. Would need to be there to see how ones application methords are taken. Hard to disect sometimes by cyber net.

The cabinets I think were Cypress. I live in Louisiana & I have the remodel plans from the person that built the pool house addition & they call for cypress. That is a wood that is native to here but, the grain is much like an oak so maybe it is cypress or maybe it is oak. Anyway, there is definitely a grain to it. DH and i argued about the primer coats & how many to put. I won that won (not that it got me anything) because the ones I did don't show any graining with 2 coats of primer. The ones he did do. So if you have thick coat of stain and/or any top coat on oak, you have to sand really well first. Then 2 coats of primer are a must - IMHO. I can see the grain in the ones that DH did and it drives me nutso. Like the underneath of the upper cabs for example. If he had sanded better & done 2 coats of primer, I don't think you would see it since I don't see the grain on the other surfaces. Who knows though because they were custom cabs, the cabinet guy could have used other woods too. They are 8 years old. Don't be afraid though. It is a lot of work but, if you follow the advice on this forum, the result is worth it. The cabs are not that shiny, it's just the lighting in the pool house is not great. They are very pretty. To the poster that asked about DIY cabs, there are some, mostly though people rip out old and put in new. I think that totally depends on the age of the cabs and the condition. If you can save what you have you are technically "going green". How in vogue is that? If they are nasty and have no character to them, then you have to start over. I have seen several posts for people that re-did therofoil or whatever it is called. It is more detailed what needs to be done but, nonetheless, less than new cabs are. I have friends and have seen many posters whose cabinets were $75k. Wow, that's a ton of money. So if you can figure it out, use what you have! Go for it. A little at a time is fine too. If you hate your cabinets, paint them. There are many posters here that have black, blue, brown or white cabinets. All look good. If you can use what you have then a little paint is so cheap compared to new. To be honest, I have the same types of cabinets in my kitchen, laundry, DD bath in my 1950s/remodeled in 2000 house that are 8 years old. All of those cabinets, I will either paint or have painted professionally, the wood is not really nice enough to restain. The ones in my Master bath & guest bath that are original to the house and then painted from 1950, they are out. They are just flat front wood nothing cabinets. There is no saving those. Anything in the last 20 years thougth might be savagable. There are so many options for colors. I can post some colored cabinets from my inspiration file if you would like to see them. that will show you paint grade cabs that are just beautiful.

Are you using the Aura Bath & Spa paint or the regular Aura? I know high quality paints are supposed to be able to handle some humidity even in low sheens, but I'd personally feel safer using a matte finish specifically designed for high humidity.

Jessica - Hmm, I was going to use the regular Aura. I'm assuming the bath & spa paint is also good? I'll have to do some digging around on that.

Paintguy - I'm assuming that's what you used? Although, you mentioned yours is in a powder room. . .

I've used both. Regular Aura in a powder room and B&S in a full bath subject to 20 minute showers by my kids. If this indeed a bath subject to steam, then the Bath & Spa is the way to go. It is also a matte finish and yes, the Aura will go right over the builder's flat. With any other product, I would definitely prime but since Aura is so resin rich, it will seal and hold out just fine. As for hitting the color, talk to your BM retailer since some BM colors require a foundation coat in order to hit the color in 2 coats (this is primarily for clean reds and yellows).

B&S it is!

Just to clarify, when you say spot prime with Aura....do you mean use a primer on those areas or literally paint over just those spots with the Aura paint before I paint the walls?

So I still may need to get a tinted primer if I want to achieve the full color in two coats? If that's the case, since it's wonder paint, couldn't I just use three coats if need be instead of purchasing the tinted primer?

okay Bath and Spa is the way to go if any humidity will be in the room... without getting to scientific, the surface of the paint actually accepts the moisture and spreads it along the surface, resulting in no sweat marks after a shower... the result of which is a beautiful matte finish all the time, without the water marks... the regular aura while outstanding paint, does not do this, it simply rejects the water and seals the surface much like a traditional semi-gloss... not that I think there would ever be a problem here, but for the same price your better off with the aura designed for humidity.

so far as the foundation coat is concerned when you order your paint the retailer should get a warning on their computer if the color you order requires a foundation coat, but in theory yes three coats would work just fine... Or instead of purchasing an expensive foundation product (think it's close to $50 for a gallon) you could just use a deep base primer and have it tinted toward the color you need.

also the big rule with aura is to get it on the wall, it does a lot of the work for you, you just gotta keep moving...

And about the quick drying... keep in mind this is an east coast product, where humidity is high... in dry areas this paint WILL dry extremely quick.
