Ceilings: Textured or Smooth?
Comments (10)Smooth is MUCH easier to repair. We had a water leak into our current kitchen from the bathroom above (three times--don't ask!) and after the first time we tried to repair the texture. Never worked (we tried ourselves, then we hired someone, but there was no way to match the original texture). After the third leak (omg I hate water leaks) we finally just re-did the entire kitchen ceiling. It was costly to do, but there was no way to match the texture from 1985. Besides, to me, texture just means the installer/finisher can't do a smooth finish properly. So if I see texture, I think less than stellar work, unfortunately (or I think OLD building)....See MoreTextured ceilings to smooth
Comments (9)Ceilings that are smooth are floated with greater care than ceilings that are going to be textured. It is not simply a matter of scraping off the textured material. Once the textured material is scraped off the ceiling, lots of finishing has to be done. I think pal and blfenton have given you the best advice. Knock off the texture then cover with 1/4 inch drywall and have it properly floated for a smooth ceiling. Get a ruler. Look at a quarter inch. It is nothing....See MoreNeed advice on installing shower recessed light
Comments (14)Thanks, Ron. I should also mention that I'm in a condo and on the top floor. There are condos below me. The condo building was built in the 1920s. The wiring in the junction box runs to the basement. The wiring for the new light fixtures and fan, on the other hand, run to a new sub-panel I installed in the kitchen. It was very tricky finding a path from the basement to the sub-panel! We eventually discovered a path by following a vent stack that ran from the basement to the roof. To make a long story short, I don't see how we could have gotten rid of the old wiring in the junction box. Placing wire nuts on the wires and installing a plate seemed to be a reasonable solution, though it may not look ideal on the ceiling from an aesthetic point of view. But maybe someone out there has a better solution. Again, thanks for your feedback....See MoreCabinets with Seedy Art Glass: texture or smooth side facing out?
Comments (5)Note: I'm personally leaning toward smooth out having compared in daylight and night light. For my glass, having the texture side out almost doesn't look like glass -- almost like a light diffusion material you see on ceiling tube fluorescent lighting. But I reit there is plenty of counsel out there saying consider all the considerations yet there is no absolute rule. Unlike say tile or flooring where there clearly is only one choice....See Moreplllog
