I also saw some yellowing here and there after priming my cabinets (with all the sanding prep too). I wasn't sure what it was from, but it overall looked minor. I switched from Latex Kilz "Original" (ran out) to BM Primer and Underbody halfway through the job and saw much less of it, but still a little. All cabinets got two coats of primer because I was trying to fill the Oak grain as much as possible. I can't remember if what I saw was after the first coat or second. I didn't give it a lot of thought until I read this thread. I continued my painting job (Aura satin off-white color) 2 coats and all is well. (Permanently???) I guess its a matter of degree. Mine was pale yellow. Orangey doesn't sound as good. Multiple coats of primer cannot hurt.

Thanks for the advice, and I will heed it. (As much as I was hoping to avoid oil-based primer!) But...I MUST know why the stain didn't bleed through plain old paint!? Does anyone know? Can anyone guess?

You wrote BIN 123. There is no such product. Zinsser makes a Bull'sEye 123 stain blocking primer. Bull'seye 123 Zinsser also makes BIN primer/sealer. BIN primer/sealer If the primer is peeling and taking all the layers of paint with it, those layers(or at least the first layer) were incorrectly applied. It is not the fault of the primer. Actually, if the primer you applied is stripping all the paint layers, that is the least expensive/most labor saving method of removing paint from walls. If the peeling is spotty, and some areas stay adhered, skim coating is the next best remedy. Then use a primer specified by the skim coat material manufacturer. Otherwise, replacing the sheet rock or adding a layer of 1/4" thick sheet rock is the other possible remedies.

Bbstx - Good to know, thanks! Graywings - I don't think it's going to really be that bad. I can't find another inexpensive night stand that I like and I really dislike it painted and want something else stained in the room. I'm also in the mood for projects. I'll also add that there aren't thin legs or any details that will be a pain minus a few knot holes. The piece has three long rectangular drawers and two smaller drawers. The whole thing is basically wide, flat pieces. Gsciencechick - I'll use my respirator and chemical gloves. Brushworks - I'm not trying to be dense here I'm not grasping why I would want to do it that way at all. The piece was primed and then painted. If I were to use gel stain over what's there I would have to go extremely dark and most likely opaque and that's not the look I'm going after.
