Paint or refinish old hardwood floors?

I was referred here from the remodeling forum with the following question:

After pulling up a rug, we discovered a very pretty hardwood floor. It has been painted around the perimeter (not neatly, I think someone may have painted around the edges then used an area rug in the center) and then there are two different shades/finishes of stain on it as well (in different areas as if someone thought about refinishing, then gave up). A wall was taken out at one point, so there is also the area where the wall was taken filled in with putty. We would most likely cut that area out and replace it with one long piece, then refinish the whole thing (paint or stain).

So, should we sand the whole thing down, then restain? Or, should we just paint it? If we choose to paint, do we need to sand? OR can we just paint over all the varying colors?

To say something about our lifestyle, we do have a cat and 3 children. And we don't mind things looking worn or older - we live in a 1928 farmhouse.

Thanks in advance for your help!
