Backsplash ideas to go with Luce di Luna quartzite

I am finally having my counters put in this week! The Luce di Luna is a white quartzite with some gray veining. My cabinets are off white and my island a dark maple. I want the dark island to pop so I was thinking an all white backsplash. Any ideas? Suggestions?

Wow, that will look sharp. What about a soft white/grey marble in different rectangles sizes. They come in 12"x12" Some rectangles has a shine and others are mat (no shine).
When you walk by it, the effect is just amazing. Good luck.

Or a white and gray glass alternating to create some kind of free form pattern.

Happy to hear I could help you with your sink choice, Ott2. I contacted Blanco USA in NJ and they mailed me the chips. You can go on their website and request the silgranite via a form they have, but after a week when I had not received the samples I called them. They explained that they will not respond to your email unless you make a request for them to do so. The next day, my samples arrived. The Metallic Gray and Anthracite sparkle, like they have shimmer in them. The Truffle is much more matte and subdued, but I think it's elegant and a gorgeous shade with the Luce di Luna. I had also thought about the Jet Mist Antiqued yesterday. It was very pretty, resembled soapstone without the maintenance issues, and 25% less than the Luce. Check it out! If I did the Luce di Luna just on my islands, I might splurge. And do something more solid and less expensive on my perimeter. But, I thought the wood top on my eating island would be warmer than the quartzite, and I don't think I can do three different countertops (wood, Luce di Luna, and quartz or granite) in one kitchen. ;-) So many decisions, aargh.

Out LDL/White Macaubus island was installed less than two weeks ago. It's so beautiful. Everyone that's seen it has commented on it and asked about it. We chose ours with some quartz crystal veining shooting in another direction that adds a bit of interest to it. Our leathered absolute black perimeter and bar will be installed within the next week. But we're going for more of a transitional feel rather than contemporary. I'm looking for "traditional with a twist" I guess. I chose it because I loved the linear pattern yet it felt flowy to me as well. I didn't want to deal with marble and didn't want the business of granite. I also didn't want my same antiqu brown granite from our previous home, though they were lovely. It was hard to swallow the price though! I may do marble hex tiles around the perimeter or a great small oval stone mosaic I saw at a local tile place. I haven't started my serious search yet since the perimeter isn't in. But I've been keeping my eyes opened.

I've got it but unfortunately we are currently at a hotel as they refinish our kitchen floors. I can post a picture on Sunday but for now I will describe my kitchen. I have a U shaped kitchen with an island. Beyond the U shape I also have a desk area and around the corner a butler pantry. My floors are natural oak. My cabs are white shaker inset and my perimeter countertops are soapstone (just saying soapstone seems like such an understatement - they are dark charcoal with a single big jagged white streak through them). My White Moon (Luce di Luna) quartzite is on my island. It is fabulous and a perfect complement to my soapstone. My quartzite might even look more modern than Sochi's because it is almost completely linear with very few squiggles. There were a few doubters in my house about the quartzite with the soapstone but the instant they saw it their mouths dropped open and they professed their immediate love for it! (even teenagers who are never wrong). I had never heard of quartzite but was at a granite yard last January and saw the white moon and knew it was going in my kitchen some where. I came home and searched in Gardenweb and saw Sochi's and that confirmed it for me. I'm with Sochi - go for it!!

Belle phoebe, how did your poultice work out? We also have luce di luna but I don't know what the fabricator used to seal it. It's been in about a year and we have had only 2 minor problems that won't go away. I don't know what to do about them but I think I'm the only one who notices since everyone is surprised when I point them out. The first mark happened even before we moved into our new house. One of the workers put a very buttery bear claw pastry on the counter. The oil mark is still there but is so faint and the wavery outlines blend with the veining in the stone. The second mark is also oil based and is from roasted red pepper juice that sat for several hours after a dinner party. Thankfully this one is only a tiny dot and oddly enough also gray (I guess from the oil) and not red. Liquids, even olive oil, bead up on our stone so I guess it only becomes an issue for us if it sits for a long time. I'll try to find our old paper work for the stone because I do remember writing down the type of sealer the fabricator mentioned that they used in their shop. Since I'm out of town for a few weeks I hope you get an answer sooner than I can get back to you.

Dear mizbe, Sorry not to have a useful suggestion for you other than to recommend classic white subway tiles. (They are trendy now; but I believe they will never truly go out of style since they are so pervasive a part of 20th-century American design history.) I can only gush: sounds like your kitchen is going to be gorgeous! Can we see pictures soon? I can't wait to see your luce di luna. And I bet many Gardenweb readers will want to know how it holds up to stains, etching, etc. compared to marble since it is frequently suggested as a substitute for marble.

mizb - have you seen my link asking for backsplash help for a modern walnut kitchen? My counters are also luce di luna quartzite, so some of the recommendations there might be helpful to you! What kind of cabinets will you have? I can't wait to see your pictures!

Sorry, sorry, I see you stated your cabs are off-white with dark maple on island, sounds lovely. With the white cabs you might be able to do something quite dramatic with the backsplash. Horizontal glass tiles perhaps to echo the linear veining in the quartzite? In gray and white or an accent colour you want to pull in?
