I assume it is the worst on the sunny sides of the house? If moisture can't get out, it will go through the wood and the paint to get out. Usually it is supposed to escape under the clapboards which is why those gaps never get caulked. It could also be that many coatings of paint has sealed those gaps. If you can't fix the moisture issue, you can use all latex paints which some water vapor will pass through instead of pushing the paint off (bubbles). If you paint with an oil based primer, it may happen again faster and also if you paint with a film forming paint like a satin or semi gloss house paint, it may happen again. Probably an acrylic stain would be best. Of course there could be another reason that the paint is peeling (poor products, poor application, poor prep, etc) but most times moisture is the culprit. I'd like the "west indies" look with a brown roof, we have flat tiles, and a white exterior paint with a coordinating trim for windows. We also have shutters which would be brown like the garage doors. So hard to pick whites! Help!

I am painting the exterior of my house. My dilemma is that I have a white shingle roof, but let's be honest it looks white to grayish a lot of the time. My gutters are white. It is a very simple ranch style. I plan on painting the trim white and the front door black with the windows on side of door white along with the trim around the door. The body of the house I can't decide if I should go dark grey, dark blue-grey, light grey, white, or a medium blue grey. It is currently a light green with hunter green trim and burgundy doors. I want the color I pick to also be good for resale in case I ever sell. Any thoughts or suggestions? My windows are black metal. I was thinking about adding wood accents such as wood shutters. Maybe a wood front yard fence. Not sure on that, or where else I could add some wood accents. I just added a large wood deck with black metal railing in the back yard. I included a photo of my house in the comments along with two ideas I found for colors.

Remove the shutters, permanently. They do not fit properly, are vinyl, and mostly likely drilled into the siding. Leave the brick and stone; paint the vinyl siding and garage door;…keeping roof color in mind, do a gray for siding and a darker complimentary gray for garage doors. Beef up those supper columns.
