YOu need to know the size of your sink cab. You need to know the depth of your sink, the depth of your counter, and if you have a window over the sink.... the height of the sink and depth of it. What kind of faucet? If there is a window/sill; make sure it doens't imped on the use of the your faucet.

This is what the plan was when we were going to do an apron-front sink. And then I changed it to a smaller, stainless steel, undermount sink. I want the ss sink to be at least 21 inches wide in the basin, and with an 8 or 9 inch deepness. And that Franke sink in my original message was the one option I got. There is no window near the sink. Thanks!

Is your base cab still 27"? If so, why couldn't you use a 24" sink?

We haven't changed the base cabinet size.....the only change I made was saying that I wanted to switch from apron-front to undermounted ss, and the same size sink I have now.

My sink right now is 24 inches wide (it's top-mounted, so that measurement is from one lip to the other). The inside basin is about 21". I'm happy with that size sink, so that's why I was fine with staying with that size instead of going bigger. That way I'll have a few more inches of counter space because there isn't much of that in this narrow galley kitchen!

Why wouldn't the two other links for Franke sinks in my original post work? Is it the depth (front to back measurement) of the sink that's the problem? Thanks!

I guess my general question is, what is the measurement that matters? The base cabinet? And then if the sink you want matches the base cabinet you have, then you don't have to worry about anything else?

In general, you can have a sink that is 3" narrower than your base cabinet. If your sink base is 28", then you can easily have a 25" sink, which is a standard size and easily found in many different materials and designs.

those franke sinks are wide--front to back--may not have enough room for the faucet before the wall. Julien makes sinks with tighter corners. we found one with an interior size of 24 x 16.

You can get the D-shaped Ticor sink in a 24" base. It barely fits and requires that you trim the top edge of the base off the thickness of the sink flange because the flange overlaps the base a little bit. This is probably the biggest sink you can get in a 24" base. It does fit though, because that is what I have in my 24" base.

I want to know who told you that you only have that sink that will work. You need to fire them. GC? KD?

Live_Wire_Oak...is that interior or exterior/overall width? I'm asking, b/c when we were looking for a sink, our KD told us the overall width (i.e., exterior width) of the sink we chose should be no more than 1/2" narrower than our sink base. So, a 36" sink base meant a sink no wider than 35-1/2". We ended up with sink that had an exterior/overall width of 35-1/8" wide that fit in our sink base with no alterations needed. Our cabinet walls are 1/2".

Based on my experience, it appears if you wish to install a sink w/no alterations to your sink base, then your sink should have an exterior width of no more than:

Width of Sink Base - 2 x Width of Cabinet Walls

(or, no wider than the interior opening of the cabinet...but if you don't have your cabinets yet, you cannot measure that!)

Additionally, you need to know three other things:

1. How thick is your subway tile + hardibacker or similar board behind it if that board is mounted on top of drywall and is not the wall itself.

2. Faucet dimensions...you need to know what faucet you're getting if you want to be certain it will fit. Some faucets need several inches behind them to work properly...handles that go back, wide stems, etc. So, check your chosen faucet's specs to see how much space you need behind the faucet. Also, if you have an undermount sink, the faucet holes cannot be drilled right at the back of the sink. You will need a little more than 1" b/w the sink & the faucet hole. The width of the stem of the faucet will vary depending on the faucet.

3. Window (I know, you have no window, but others might): If there's a window behind your sink

• If window is not counter-height (~36"), the sill height & depth

• If window is counter-height, and has no sill, the depth of the window well

• If window is counter-height, and has a sill, the depth of the window well and the depth & height of the sill (may be negligible height-wise, but do need to be sure it won't impact the amount of space available for the faucet hole.)
  

CalypsoChick...if you look at this picture, the measurements, you can see the overall width of 35-1/8". It was narrow enough to fit in a 36" wide sink base with 1/2" walls with no alteration.

Notes about your other sink choices:

First, though, you say you have a 24" sink base, but you really appear to have a 30" sink base...you need to confirm that with your KD or GC (or whoever did the final design and ordered or will order the cabinets) b/f you can decide on a sink. Meanwhile...

So the drawing I showed above is from when we were going to do a farmhouse sink, so it shows a 27 inch base. We were going to install either this Lavello:

27" x 20" Outside Dimensions
24" x 16" Interior Bowl Dimensions
9" Front Apron (Sink Bowl is 10" Deep)

or the Shaw's sink, which has a 24 inch exterior width, and 21 1/4 interior basin width. It's 18 inches front to back on the exterior.

But then, I decided I wanted a ss undermount sink. I don't have any new drawings for that, so I guess I don't know what our new cabinet base size will be. Based on the options we were going to do before, I thought I could easily use another sink that had an exterior width of 24 inches and interior of 21 inches. And I was confused when the designer said that that Franke was the only one that would work. There might have been some miscommunication with her thinking that I only wanted a Franke sink.

I'd prefer not to have a D-shaped sink, rather one that just has slightly rounded edges or just straight edges. I'm going to discuss this in detail with the designer to see what is going on. Thanks!
