What is the age of your child? And have you tried any methods yet?

She's 18 months, and I haven't tried much , yet. I've bought a potty, and she sits on it anytime we go to the bathroom. Today was the first time she sat bare-bottom. She doesn't care whatsoever if she is wet or dirty, so I'm trying to make her more aware. I plan on hitting the library and looking for instructional books on where to get started, was hoping someone might have a suggestion for me :) Christy

Lots of good advice here. I remember my mom telling me that she got me potty trained by telling me that she would buy me pretty little lace panties if I would start using the toilet. She said I started using the toilet and she bought me the pretty panties. hee-hee! I have boys and they take a little longer than girls in general. We pushed our first one too soon and had to back off and let him do it at his own pace. Poor little guy would get constipated and we'd end up using "positories" as he called them to help him. He was about 4 before he was fully trained. Our second son started potty training himself wanting to do everything big brother was doing, then went backwards when son number three was born, but eventually got back on track. Third son copied older brothers but also enjoyed going pee outside in the backyard and once on the garage floor - 'cause it made a loud noise and was funny to him. I think the thing that got my boys to using the potty was watching one of those potty training videos. There was one where the song went, "Now I'm going to the potty, potty . . . Yes, I'm going to the potty, potty, etc." They enjoyed singing that song when they went to the potty and it was just one of those songs I couldn't get out of my head! A friend of mine started laughing at me a couple months ago when I was talking about this subject to someone and started singing that song. She said it was the same video she used for her daughter! Check your local library to see if they have any potty training videos available for check out. We checked this one out for two weeks with my second son since he enjoyed watching it so much!

Hi Rynn01: A few tips I read & tried on my kid. She was potty-trained when she was 3 1/2 months old. Children are different from each other, some are potty-trained much earlier, like an orphan coming from China, was potty trained at 1-year old. That orphan is now a great gymnast .. she's fearless. Some kids are more timid and need more positive encouragement. Lecturing and forcing kids doesn't work. What worked for my kid was some tiny books, which I put in a basket next to her potty. She was too busy reading those books ... so it's NOT a forced procedure. She became a great reader later, now is in the gifted program in middle school. Some other tips that worked for other parents: Buy some cheap toys, wrap it up in tiny packages, and your kid can only open if he/she went potty. When I rewarded my kid with M&M candies, it was so much easier. Positive psychology works better than harsh discipline. My sister is a strict & harsh mother... no amount of yelling and forcing could make her 4-years old go potty. Finally she let him chooses some nice undies with cartoon characters that he likes. He didn't want to dirty his fav. cartoon characters, so he was motivated to use the potty. No one can make anyone else do anything .. it's best to have a "payback", or make it enjoyable, so the kid will unconsciously do that herself/himself, rather than being a "second-rated" option. I hope that helps. I'm in mid 50's, and my Mom had 13 children ... we were all potty-trained at 2, since that was the only choice we had.

I trained my kids by asking them by moeling first. I had a potty chair in the bathroom for them and they would just come and copy me. I started pretty young. Then I talked to them aobut how diapers would not be around forever. One day there will be no more diapers. We also picked out cool underware. I waited for the underware untill they were interested in it and asked for it. Once htat happened they seemed to do it on thier own. My son was trained at slightly over two by accicident. We had been talkign about diapers being all gone and my husband could not find diapers one morning when I was gone. He said I think the diapers are all gone, so my son grabbed a pair of underwear and just did it. He did struggle a little but it was never a power struggle between us he was not having accidents wihtin a couple days. To get him to sit long enought to go I put up a piece of paper next to the toilet and gave him a ton of stickers and jsut let him stick htem on the paper. Think of things like htat your child will like to sit and do for a little bit. Also remember every child is different, you need to read your child and take thier cues.

My son's Potty Time book is his favorite, like all kids he loves repetition, sometimes we'd read that book 10 times in a row before he'd be ready to move on to something else else. A few weeks ago he told me that he wanted to wear "big undies" just like the boy in his book. Remebering what my Grandma said "once you start, you can't go back, no matter how messy it gets", I let him spend the day in his big undies. He only had one accident, and 3 weeks later I can only count a handle full of times that he's had a potty accident, including at night and at naptime. Now poopy is a totally different story. I've timed him, and it seems a few minutes after eating luch is his "regular" time. I can set him on the potty and we'll read books or play with cars, and he refuses to go. For some reason the little man will not go poopy on the potty chair. I've even stopped caling it a potty chair thinking that maybe he was taking it literally, now it's the "Big Boy Toilet". I guess patience and perseverance will win out. I know he's not going to graduate from college without being properly toilet trained! BTW - At this point I refuse to be like my mother and resort to bribery, but I must admit she convinced both of my daughters in one weekend to use the potty with a pack of Juicy Fruit!!!

Well I did go to the library and found one book in particular that I like. It is called Diaper~Free Before 3. Written by Jill M. Lekovic, M.D. I find it very imformative and instructional, so if anyone is wanting to find a book about potty training, this is my recommendation. Also, it says you can start as early as 6 months old. :) Christy

We started potty training our daughter at 17 months. We tried to make it fun and not put too much pressure on her. We found books were very helpful. We had two books about potty training, but we also read other books to her while she was on the potty. At the very early learning stage it helped her to stay on the potty long enough and relax so she'd go peepee. She quickly understood the concept, but it took her a little while to always make it to the potty in time. Now she is 33 months and for about two months she even sleeps without pullups at night. She has occasional accidents, but that's either at night or when she is too distracted. I glad that she is doing so good.

When my DD was training, I wrote a little picture book, myself. She helped me.

I drew pictures of her favourite toys and had simple wording.

Its was very funny and a lot of fun doing it. It was nice for her to be in the story, too.

My technique was to start how I meant to go on. From day one, use the potty and dont look back. It worked well. I did stay home for about a week, making sure she understood what was going on, then short trips to shops and public toilets. I did not want to confuse her by putting on a diaper sometimes, and taking it off at other times.

It was summer, also, so she wandered around bare bottomed all day. It was really a lovely time, looking back, we spent time in the garden, took the potty outside.

I also, started with giving her a small sweet as a reward, so she was very keen to get going.

She was close to 2 when I did all that.

She is now 20...oh dear...how the years fly past.
Enjoy your special time with your little one.
