OT - What is appropriate?

Sorry this is just a bit OT but what is an appropriate First Holy Communion gift for a boy age about 6 or 7?

Alot of people might tell you a nice bible or a gold cross. I prefer to leave the personal items up to immediate family. Instead you could buy a savings bond or even a giftcard to any store. Maybe even include a small giftcard to Mcdonalds so they can treat themselves. My kids enjoy that.

Many families give money in a card. Go to your local religious book store and perhaps they can give you suggestions. He will likely get more than one rosary, so try not to get him one of those.

Good question floral - I just assumed they were going to sell plants since they mentioned for their market garden but that may be an incorrect assumption. <What would be perfect is a table or guide that shows what size cell to start seeds in, how long they need before being transplanted to a bigger cell or pot, and then how long they can stay in that pot until they need to be transplanted outside. Does this exist?> Not really as there are too many variables. A very general rule of thumb is first transplant is just after first true leaves develop but it can be done earlier too. Second transplant once the crown of the plant exceeds the diameter of the pot or the height of the plant exceeds the height of the pot as either indicates approx. same size root ball (theoretically). But there are always exceptions so you monitor for signs of the plant becoming root bound (slowed/stunted growth, increased need for frequent watering, etc.). Dave

Boils down to a belief that one's own personal preferences should rule others. I don't agree, although I will say that seems to have become an almost reflexive response in our nation to an opposing opinion. But with this one (and speaking as a former hippie chick who scandalously wore jeans to church in 1970) I think it boils down to the customs and traditions that have, in the past, bound societies together, by showing respect for the occasion and each other. Really, when it comes down to it, why have a funeral at all? If you don't feel there is a religious imperative, why waste the money and time, much less be clean and dressed more than schlepping -to- the- grocery -store casually? What purpose does it serve? "the essential or characteristic customs and conventions of a community" Don't read snobbery into what I am saying. In my aunt & uncle's small farming community 40 years ago, to come to the visitation and funeral in spotless clean and pressed shirt and jeans would have been understood as one's best, and that was fine. I myself generally never wear a skirt, dress or heels, but I will wear dress slacks, and a professional looking top and jacket. If my foot is acting up, I have a pair of all black athletic shoes that my orthotics fit into that aren't obvious. My feeling is that many customs and traditions have eroded in many instances to the point of being non-existent. When we travel or read about other nations and cultures, we usually think of their custom and traditions as charming, worthy of respect, of value and deserving of preservation, (well sure I can name some that are totally not, let's not go there) and yet, here in America, we seem to take the opposite view.

Thanks for all the great color ideas! I love the idea of having the porch steps go forward! The roof has a small slope to each side and (unfortunately) the previous owner put a brown metal roof on it (yuk). But because the slope is so shallow, you don't notice it very much. However, it is a consideration when choosing paint colors. I do plan on getting matching clapboard for the garage. Because of structural issues, we may need to rebuild it entirely (hopefully not). When I have looked at pictures, I don't seem to see gutters. Do people put gutters on this style of house or does that compromise the style? Also, what are your thoughts on a front porch on this style house? The front yard is quite large, larger than the backyard.

Savings Bond and a small token of rememberance of the day. It is tough for boys. For my Godson my DH and I gave him a large face value bond (pay half the total face value and once it matures, he can have some savings). We also found a rosary that was masculine as well as a boy's communion picture frame in order to display a picture of First Communion Day.

I thought there was a thread on this a while ago and I know some suggested treating First Communion just like any other celebration, and giving non-religious gifts, but personally I would highly recommend sticking with a religious type gift. I would fit the gift to the occasion, so just like I wouldn't show up with a bottle of cologne or some socks for a housewarming, I wouldn't bring a basketball to a First Communion Party.

Here are some suggestions...
Religious Books (kid bibles, books on Saints, etc.) or a nice Rosary (although they may get more than one, he can still use it). If you have a religious type store in your area they probably have a lot of stuff. Below is a link that may give you some ideas. The amount you spend would probably depend on your relationship to the child. If you are family friends but not real, real close I would think anywhere from $10-30 would be fine. It's really not a big present giving occasion and focus is more on the sacrament itself.

I fall else fails, or you don't feel comfortable giving a religious gift, I'd stick a $20 in a Communion Card...maybe a little more if you are closely related.
