Looking for Stain/Paint Advice for T1-11 for Shed

I am building a shed this spring. It is a budget project, so T1-11 will be the siding. I am currently considering translucent stain, solid stain, and paint. In terms of looks, I prefer the solid stain or paint appearance (this is not cedar T&G here). However, my main concern is durability and mold resistance of the finish.

As a side note, our house is rough sawn clapboards and was professionally painted 4 years ago with a yellow tint of P&L Accolade solid stain (one coat primer, two coats stain, after pressure washing and drying for one week). It looked beautiful, but has faded a lot (full sun, especially in winter when the leaves are gone) and started growing mold within a year or two (on the sunny side of house - stain obviously breaking down quickly on that side of the house). Is this because stain is more susceptible to this? There is no peeling or flaking.

The siding on the shed (T1-11) will have a rough texture, so I was leaning toward stain....but would paint more durable? I really don't want to deal with peeling (suggests stain), nor excessive mold.

I was thinking about a solid color stain (maybe Sikkens) that will hide mold well by its color (medium to dark tone - browns, blues, or greens). Is there a better way?

My entire house is T1-11. Years ago I stained but it fades quickly and I switchewd to a good latex paint. Two good coats of a high quality latex and it should last up to 10 years. Good Luck!

Thanks. That was my thought going into the process. I just am not sure if I might see more potential for peeling with the temperature fluctuations in an unheated and uncooled shed.

Is solid stain more likely to fade than latex or waterborne paint?

Previous house owner finished a room in the basement with T1-11 siding. It looks like it was pre-stained, sort of a walnut. I want to paint it an off white for a fresher look and to brighten up the room which gets no natural light. The finish coat will be SW Duration, satin or matte finish. It has a rough texture. Ospho - available at the paint store, hardware, building supply. I used it on a completely rusty shed, walls of 100% surface rust.. pitted too. Then topped it with rustolium about 1999. Shed gets hit by mist from sprinkler system and will grow green mold that maybe once every two years gets a clorox scub. It hasn't showed any more rust.

T1-11 is about as simple as siding gets, hard to imagine that any halfway trained carpenter can't fix it. Just replace entire damages sheets ("patching" isn't worthwhile) and make sure a z-flashing is used at the top edges to divert water to the outside at joints. A "siding contractor" will almost certainly try to sell you something different and more expensive, like vinyl siding. Just look for an ordinary carpenter.

I would use cedar lap siding and stain it cedar. I also agree, the main problem right now, is the door color. The front porch, desperately needs railings, that is totally unsafe. You could also just paint the vinyl siding, although, vinyl will sometimes warp if it is a darker color, and I like the idea of a stained cedar, which is a bit darker.

Skip the T1-11 and go with Hardiboard, then paint. Sorry about the rant but I've replaced so much T1-11 that I'd just as soon paint the housewrap as use that stuff.

Too late.

It is a shed, anyway. I did not want hardiboard. I used Cabot oil based for simplicity in the fall to get it done in one coat before winter. I may paint at some point.

Doesn't look "budget" to me, nice job. Did you warm up for swinging a hammer by first swinging a maul?

I do split some wood, but that was delivered that way.

It was budget (rough sawn pine trim, T-111) in that I did not go with cedar ($$$), but the framing and roof are rock solid. 2x6 roof (open trusses for storage with 1/2 gussets), everything 16" OC, arch shingles (not much more than 3-tab, solid floor).

Nice shed!
Don't think you'll be disappointed with Cabot's product. I used in on our cedar privacy fence (semi) after using Behr for years and having to recoat it too frequently (for me, anyway). Cabot's is holding up much better so I'll stick with it for exterior stains. Especially as far as being water repellent, tho I do get a bit of mold after a long while below north facing horizontal supports, it's nothing compared to what would show up on Behr stain.
