How much can I take off ?

My new entertainment console is alittle too tall. The legs of the unit are 7 1/2 inches from the floor. It just feels too high and too much space under the console. How much can I take off the legs and still have it look correct/balanced ? The tv that sits on it is a 55 inch.

Do you mean you're planning to saw off the legs? Don't do that! I would buy that console from you in a heartbeat, it looks like a very interesting piece.

Maybe look for a console that has legs you can screw off and replace those with the correct height wheel or bun feet.

If you make the legs much shorter than 7 1/2 inches, you won't be able to get under it to clean very easily and it'll be dust-bunny heaven!

Funny you should ask, I was just out back doing that very thing. I have several species in my yard, and just removed the node branches off B. multiplex 'Alphonse Karr' and Giant Thorny Bamboo, B. bambos. The B bambos, a 25' timber, I remove all node branches to about 6 feet up so I can walk underneath the plant. The Alphonse Karr is of course smaller, & I removed the branches to about 4 or 5 feet from the ground. If your plant hasn't been in the ground too long I would do it slowly so you don't shock it just to be safe. I have done this several times (the plant will put out new side branches) all at once with no apparent damage to the plant. I have given the plant a good watering with a root stimulator/anti-shock transplant solution after doing this and get a surge in new culms a few weeks later. Whether or not this is a coincidence I donÂt know.

my sweetlee tangerine tree grows fast when the tree reached a height of "X" I clipped the leader at the very top. No energy wasted by the tree The tree grew 2 trunks. I clipped them at a high of "Y" Each one produced 2 more and I pinched the strongest on each side and left the weaker unpinched. The pinched stronger ones split into 2 but those 2 did not over take the ones not pinched. This way I have a balanced well branched tree I am aiming for 8 ft tall. You and I have a kumquat tree. They can't be trimmed in this fashion. Trim out some of the lower branches so the remaining low branches get more energy to grow taller. Never trim height off a kumquat tree. Every advance my kumquat tree makes is with a waterspout that fills out later with a balanced look. Start of a wqaterspout New leader takes over and has now started to branch out. If you trim the lower limbs, reduce double trunked limbs to single trunk limbs and foliar feed those limbs only, not the top This is best done by breaking off all but one growth spirt per limb you want to grow. No lost foliage! work in the area of the double circle.

This is a job for a table saw. If you have a woodworking store around your area (independent, Rockler, or Woodcraft), they can probably lead you to a craftsman, furniture repair shop, furniture maker, or cabinet shop who could do this for you. The major problem might be matching the finish from the original to freshly cut wood.

Don't waste your time ladies and gent.... She knows her BF is a deadbeat and she supports him. I wanted to say the same thing so badly. Life together, Quirk stated "you get to see how your partner parents. Not how they say they plan to parent, but how they actually do parent." Why are there not enough clues for you? It is all these types of things that happen over time you get to see and scrutinize to determine if this is the kind of person you want to plan a life with. What you are doing is deciding you want a deadbeat dad for your own child(ren); you are deciding that for your own children, you want not only a deadbeat dad but one who is emotionally abusive to them and to you; you are deciding you want a man who is so controlling you stay confused most of your life and there is no way you can possibly do anything right because he finds something wrong with everything (the subject of his daughter is only the tip of the iceberg); you are deciding you want a man who does not consider your time, your feelings, or your existence as a human being who deserves any kind of respect; you are deciding you want a man who use his passive/aggressive tactics to constantly keep you feeling guilty and make you think you are the one always in the wrong; you are deciding you want a man who will bad mouth you to your children, family, and friends. A little of that part I still question but really think those circumstances were created out of your desperation to finally do something that pleases him - a man who cannot be pleased. But this is getting worse by the word. Sylviatexas had him pegged from the beginning. LOL I should have known better than to second guess her. There is nothing to figure. There is nothing to try an remedy. There is nothing to talk to him about to try to straighten out. The only thing for you to do is decide to stay (all the things you are deciding you want) or go. But that was never your question, was it? You already said you don't want to leave. Therefore, I hope you are able to eek out a happy life and smile through the misery.

Mine space is 4" off the floor and I can get a dust mop
and vacuum under it to clean.
Even 3 1/2" space would be fine.

So, the answer is you can shave up to 4" off your
legs...just
make sure you cut straight. :)

Prairiegirl- I already bought the console and it's very pretty.
I wouldn't attempt to saw them off myself, I would have a professional come and to it.
Cliff and joanne - will the console still look good with shorter legs? Once I have them cut down, there's no going back....yikes. I don't want to lose the character of the piece.

Don't do that sweetie, you will be so sorry. See if you can fill in the space with a couple of short baskets or something. It's way to nice to chop up!

Can you take a photo of the console, with your tv on it, in your space? That will help us to answer your question.

Is the TV "too high" to view properly or does it just look strange to you? If the latter, you might get used to it like that with time.

Viewing is fine - it just looks odd - like it's just too high. And everything in this room is off the floor (on legs). I have to find some furnishings that don't make my room look like it's getting ready for a flood !

I really need to figure out how to post pics.

How are the legs attached to the unit? If they unbolt or unscrew you're probably better off just buying new legs or maybe they're called feet...

Why don't you keep it as is and just try it for a bit. We have a 55 inch on a console similar in height and while it seemed high at first it now feels perfect.

You know that phrase, "measure twice, cut once"?
If you decide to go through with cutting, I'd make the professional measure 4 times.

I couldn't put myself through the stress watching the person measure and cut! It seems easy enough, but ...

I wouldn't hesitate to modify those legs to suit my needs.

I do not believe the legs affect the balance of the piece at all. It wouldn't look right sitting flat on the floor, but it could sit on very short legs and look fine.

The legs are tapered slightly, I would not want to alter that line.

There's a picture of the actual piece in a room, I think it's intended to have those
legs.
If you decide to shorten the legs, I would not take off more than 2 inches.

Hold off for a while. The legs don't seem that high from the floor. As for the TV, you will most likely get used to it. I had to after it felt like it was taking up the whold darn room when first bringing it in. A 55" needs something to balance it's size, your piece is beautiful to work with.

i think it would be fine with 3" legs or so...
to be honest, i don't think the legs do much for or against the piece so i actually think you could remove them entirely and the piece would look fine- like a buffet/server... (but then the piece might be lower than you'd want for tv watching, though i don't think so...)

I agree with the 'do not shorten the legs' group. The furniture was designed to look as it does by a professional.

If you don't feel that some baskets below will help, try to take a very good photo of the piece in your home, or find one online, and if online, try to edit the photo to shorten the legs to see if you like the look.

If you have a good pic of it in your home, print it off and maybe slide a piece of paper up and down on it to see how the shorter legs look. Once that saw starts, it'll be too late to change your mind!

The specs say the console is 36" high, which seems a bit tall. Our 65" plasma sits in a custom cabinet and the console is 30" high. When viewing the TV you don't want to have to tilt your head up too much. Generally the TV picture will look its best when viewed straight-on, at a height where your eyes are level with the middle of the screen.
